Old-school MAC Vindicator
« on: 15 August 2021, 19:52:34 »
This is one I always wanted to do, but couldn't figure out when I was a kid. I just didn't get what was happening. Then it struck me: the Awesome from the old CamoSpecs book was painted as a knight in shining armor. It was all chrome and we were seeing the reflections.

I first airbrushed Reaper silver and then followed with blue and brown inks from opposing angles. Attaching the Vindicator to a pin vise made it easy to get close to the bottom of the mini for a proper nadir shadow. I then added in with brushed black ink for areas where it seemed the blue and brown met. This was then followed with a black oil wash to maintain clean surfaces.

I'm not 100% with it, but I think I got the main idea across. One of the problems is that it is so hard to correct anything. Inks are very transparent and metals are just awful to paint. You have to get it right from the start, which I didn't, because trying to match what you airbrushed is incredibly difficult by hand. That being said, I think an NMM approach to really crank up the contrast and reflections with brush-work alone would be possible, and likely amazing.

I'd say you got that effect down. Very nice work

Thanks!

But you know how it is: you're often your own worst critic. I look at it and think where I can up the contrast, how can I make it better, what effects can I do to improve it, etc.

A true mirror-effect is practically impossible to achieve and maintain.  But here’s a couple takes on it:

"Ah, yes.  The belle dame sans merci.  The sweet young thing who will blast your nuts off.  The kitten with a whip.  That mystique?"
"Slavish adherence to formal ritual is a sign that one has nothing better to think about."
"Variety is the spice of battle."
"I've fought in... what... a hundred battles, a thousand battles?  It could be a million as far as I know.  I've fought for anybody who offered a decent contract and a couple who didn't.  And the universe is not much different after all that.  I could go on fighting for another hundred years and it would still look the same."
"I'm in mourning for my life."
"Those who break faith with the Unity shall go down into darkness."

I like the start you have here. Definitely agree that getting some of the higher contrast points would be very helpful. Having the darkest dark and the lightest light touching is important to really get the hard contrast that makes NMM effective. The eyes pull it off, challenge is just getting it across the rest.

Very impressed. Great concept. Great job!!  8)
I do wonder though if a darker or even black background would better showcase your efforts here?

That's a good idea. I'll have to see if I can track down some black poster board or similar.

This is beautiful work!
Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries

These, in the day when heaven was falling,      Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
The hour when earth's foundations fled,         They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
Followed their mercenary calling,               What God abandoned, these defended,
And took their wages, and are dead.             And saved the sum of things for pay.

Thanks, everyone. To be honest, I'm a bit surprised this was necro'd, and has gotten more love than my Jagermech or Mad Dog. But give the people what they want.
