Known also as The Golden Talons, the 5th Battle Cluster has served Clan Jade Falcon across three centuries and at least two galaxies, and is famed for being the force that won battle armor via trial against Clan Wolf during the Golden Century. Integrated into the Falcon's Delta Galaxy during the Clan Invasion, the Refusal War would see them broken and ultimately reconstituted under Epsilon Galaxy, where they would remain until at least 3085.

While said to be half-strength by '85, the Cluster was regarded highly enough that it was among the first units to be equipped with the Flamberge Heavy OmniMech.

By 3145, The Golden Talons would once again fall under Delta Galaxy. Delta Galaxy was one of the Jade Falcon units to follow Malvina Hazen in her assault. They took part in the fighting on Skye, and participated in a drive on Coventry. Unfortunately this exhausted them, and they needed time to recover. However, by the time the Falcons hit Tharkad they were ready for combat. They participated in the Falcon assault on Tharkad, but were driven off-world. In 3145 they raided several systems near Tharkad and this allowed them to keep their edge, but Clan Wolf-in-Exile constantly posed a threat to their supply lines.

Now as the nearly the entire Touman of Clan Jade Falcon drives on Earth, to face hated foes the Republic of the Sphere and Clan Wolf, the Fifth Battle Cluster prepares for combat.

This Talon trinary appears quite conventional, if heavy, for Clan Jade Falcon forces of this era. It is, however, distinctive for one reason - the Trinary is not commanded by a MechWarrior, but by a Tanker.

Star Captain Kepher of the Mehta Bloodline (Hell's Horses branch) was a keen proponent of the Mongol Doctrine within that clan. He enthusiastically engaged in working with Clan Jade Falcon warriors on their combined assault on the Inner Sphere. When the rest of Clan Hell's Horses broke with the Jade Falcons in 3145, the Star Captain broke with his clan and appealed directly to Khan Malvina Hazen to be taken into her Clan to continue the fight. After a prefunctory "harvest" trial, which he lost, he challenged for a Star Commander position within Epsilon Galaxy. He then proceeded in the next three years to achieve the position of Star Captain, command of a Trinary, and finally claimed a vacant Mehta bloodname in the Clan Jade Falcon branch of that shared legacy.

Despite this, Star Captain Kepher Mehta somehow did not earn Khan Malvina Hazen's trust. His Trinary was transferred to Stephanie Chistu's Gyrfalcon galaxy - another name for Delta galaxy - prior to the descent on Terra. This was purportedly to stiffen Delta's adherence to the Mongol Doctrine, but many saw this as the Khan still not trusting this off-Clan "intruder"

Here we see the Star Captain's Command Star - points of Kelswa, Carnivores, Oro, Huitzilopochtli, and SM2s. While not the speediest unit, they more than make up for it in range and punch, fielding 10 Gauss Rifles and 6 artillery mounts. The Star Captain manages his 'Mech stars with a light touch, secure in his Command Star's ability to deal with anything that might cause problems for his other units.

The Fast Assault Star is a tribute to Falcon innovation. Commanded from a Jade Hawk, the unit also contains a Shrike 2, Onager, Flamberge Prime, and Gyrfalcon.

And the Heavy Battle Nova is a weapon for any occasion, commanded from a Vulture Mk III Prime, supported by Grand Summoners A and B, and Hels Prime and B. The all-Omni force is accompanied by its integral Thunderbird battle armour.

Okay, another unit! Started on these when finishing off the Hastati, which got delayed in posting. But compared to a full IS Battalion with BA, transports, etc, this Trinary flew off the paintbrush!

I've been wanting to do a Falcon unit in the MW:DA scheme - a dark metallic/grey with green trim. And I bought these units earlier in the year as part of my big buy off Fan Funding. And I can't finish other units until Wave 2 hits, so it was time ...

Paintscheme worked surprisingly well.
* Base black
* "Prime" my drybrushing with gunmetal
* Ghostbrush with steel, just to get the edge highlights
* Paint "metal" bits with pure steel
* I did do one coat of the green bits, mainly for alignment.
* Hit with two coats of Nuln Oil
* Redo green bits
* Red cockpits.
* Matt varnish

One thing that worked (IMHO) very well - prior to the matt varnish, the steel & gunmetal didn't differentiate - both were shiny, even after the Nuln. But when the matt kicked in, I think the steel differentiates really well!

The story? Well, when doing the AS formations, the roles of Fast Assault and Command suited the two 'Mech stars. But there was no good formation to suit the vehicle star - too weak armour on some for assault, wrong roles for battle ... and then it hit me. Command!  Which made the other 'Mech star heavy battle, which worked well with them. But how would a vehicle warrior end up commanding a Trinary in Jade Falcon territory? So I faked in the Hells Horses connection. True fact - the Mehta BloodName is shared between Falcons & Hells Horses post-Wars of Reaving. So I thought that might be the excuse needed.

Really happy how this turned out - unit #81. Now working on Dawn Guard, and waiting for shipping-sign from Aetherworks ...

As always, feedback sought & appreciated.

1. Awesome work, as always.
2. I love the prolific nature of your painting, Especially all the cool variants that I wouldn't otherwise see.
3. Love seeing the Hel and Grand Summoner alt models.  Did all those arms come with the IWM mini or did you have to purchase/fabricate your own arms for those models?

Can't wait to see your Dawn Guard choices and schemes!  I can do stripes but diagonal blocking scares me.   :P xp

  • Gravity always wins.
I am always amazed at not only your speed at doing whole units, but you dedication to getting them done and moving on to the next group.

That said, this group looks very sharp. Great color combo, and the metallics really came out well.  Have to say the tanks really stand out for me.

Well done WT!  :thumbsup: :thumbsup: 8) 8)

As always, folks, thanks for the kind words!

I am really happy with these. Especially the Totem lance. Say what you will, that line of designs are visually appealing, and distinctive. The minis themselves were pleasures to build & paint.

MArauderD, "specially all the cool variants that I wouldn't otherwise see." - ironically, there's no customisation in the unit. The Shrike came with dual-PPC arm or dual-AC arm, and I just liked the dual-AC arm more. You can't see it, but the ammo feeds led me to paint them brass; you can see it better here, along with the steel contrast on the thighs:

One thing I tried which I think worked really well on the Vulture Mk III and Flamberge - the missile pods. I hate trying to do little missile tips. So on all of them, I painted the missile surfaces a paler green. Then I used the black wash to pool around the missiles, so that the background got dark, while the missile tips still stood out. It came out beautifully on the Vulture, I hope you agree, and I'd never have achieved that 'clean' look otherwise!

(A similar trick I used on my Hastati & Steiner Strikers, to salvage bad attempts to paint closely-grouped missile tips white - I sloshed them with contrast paint, in those cases yellow, which covered up most of the badness, then added red tips with the side of a felt-tip pen. Take a look at the Summoner B and Ryoken II, you'll see what I mean - look much better than I painted them!)

As for the units ... it really started back in 2013. A very good friend lost his rental unexpectedly, and was selling off his gaming stuff to help raise a deposit. I ended up picking up a bulk lot of those minis he couldn't get good prices for on ePay, and added to my existing store had about 200 'Mechs. That was also when I was accumulating the bulk MW:DA figures I'm still pulling vehicles, BA, and infantry out of. And this seemed like a good way to use them up ... by the time Wave 2 comes in, I'll have about 2 original metals, but 150 KS minis to paint. The real bummer is running out of cheap plastic vehicles, but judicious IWM purchases and 3D prints of 'real world' armour should see me through for a while more.

And it has led me to be very organised. That's the way to do a unit build:

- Find a scheme you're comfortable doing. You can push yourself, but I won't be doing cherry blossoms any time now.
- Do proofs of concept. Does the idea work? Do you like the look of it? Are you happy to commit to 30-40 minis of it? I'd never do Dawn Guard if not for Citadel contrast paints, for example.
- Buy the paints you'll need, if you don't have enough. Paint matching - especially with different brands - is not fun, but doable.
- Assemble all the minis you'll need in a box. I have several boxes waiting for KS2 to arrive to fill out their TO&Es.
- When it's time, start bulk work. Break it down into all the 'Mechs, or all the vees, if it helps. But just keep pushing it.

(For example, I've got 2 'Mechs done-based-sealed, 7 'Mechs in tidyup phase (metallics added, just cleanup needed), 2 primed, 1 in KS2 yet to arrive. The 15 vees and 12 BA have had yellow slashed on the white base, needing yellow highlighting, then metallics, then tidyup, and the 4 squads of battlefield infiltrators need to be cut loose from the DA base, painted, etc. Then I'll have to do basing on the 'Mechs, prepare 15 bases for vees, basing for the BA, and wait for KS2 ...

Obviously it helps to have a dedicated man-cave work area separate from the gaming table. But that works for me.

Now I wanna make a Jade falcon star.  >:D

All the new partial wing mechs coming makes for some difficult choices.

Missed this, so cool!
Seems somewhat darker colors than what MWDA minis* used, but doesn't matter, they look great.
Too bad the Hadur artillery hover doesn't have mini yet, would've fit perfectly here as i think the Falcons used those in MWDA.
Generally speaking i find the Onager and Flamberger kinda terrible but have you say seeing them painted, they do look kinda good!

Kinda makes me want to paint my Clan 'Mechs in Falcon colors after all. And with no more crazy Malvina, going back to Falcons is actually feasible.
Not making any decisions yet though, i need to get the minis i want first, and i need some IlClan-era info before committing to anything. Plus i probably change my mind few times anyhow...

*Which Falcon Galaxy were the MWDA Falcons based on? 'Cause they don't look like Deltas to me.

If we get Hadurs, I could easily expand the vehicle Star into a Binary or Trinary. Plus IWM-scale Nacons and Skandras and Skadis, oh my!

And yes, canonically the DA Falcons are from Delta Galaxy - ironically the anti-Mongols under Stephanie Chistu. CamoSpecs are beginning to list the DA schemes as canonical, but WizKids went with "Rule of Cool" when creating their faction paintschemes.
