The Legendary Mechwarriors go to Desert Bus
« on: 05 September 2021, 14:08:54 »
My big summer hobby project was part of the Desert Bus for Hope Craftalong. For those not familiar, it's a 24 hour online fundraiser held annually every November where a bunch of professional funny people play the worst video game ever to solicit donations for Child's Play Charity. I painted up my copy of the Legendary Mechwarriors box in the livery of the 4 shifts of the 24 hours stream, and then I sent them off to the fundraiser organizers to be given away as part of the fundraiser! I'm really proud of my work here, each of these minis took about 12 hours of work start to finish and the whole project took about three months start to finish. It was quite the skill builder, going from my normal "slightly higher than table quality" standard to something I though would make people want to donate to chairty. I can't wait to see them go to a good home!

All impressive, but I’m most impressed by the varied colors of the MAD

I'm glad you appreciate it! Getting those colors right tools lot of effort. I had to do all my underpainting in bright pink to get the right vibrancy.

There's actually only one van/bus, it has a magnet on the underside that connects to a magnet embedded at different spots in the road on each base.

I really like every part of this.

Mind sharing how you did the purple on that Archer?

Mind sharing how you did the purple on that Archer?

It was a bit of a process, but that purple is probably the easiest of the lot, at least to explain. All of these started with a monochromatic sketch style underpaininting (kind of like a Zenithal on steroids) - the Marauder in a bubblegum pink  undercolor, the rest in black and white. The main colors were then clzes on top of that undercoat. The Archer was coated in the Amethyst Overlay from Rainy River Designs - basically a premixed glaze. Then I used some of my RRD Burnt Plum for the glazed highlights and a mix of green and blue washes for the shadows. The Highlight panels are Vallejo Game Collor Squid Pink with some lighter tones of the same color used as the highlight. The purple was the one I was most confident in going into the project - I've used that Amethyst Overlay a LOT and I swear by it. Easiest way to get good rich purple, and you can modulate it very nicely with the color and intensity of the underpainting.
