The Classic BattleTech Forum Mercenary Regiment
« on: 26 August 2015, 16:27:38 »
Okay, folks.  We all have our favorites BattleMechs--we know them, we love them, we use them as often as we can!

Today, as a thought exercise, how about we (the posters here at CBT) form our own Merc unit?  We all get to choose (EDIT) any TWO BattleMechs produced by the Inner Sphere (including the Star League) up to 3050 or any IS/Periphery Age of War design (once again, up to 3050 and NOT including any Clan 'Mechs or OmniMechs or technology).  (EDIT) If you choose two 'Mechs, please make those choices in two separate weight classes (Light, Medium, Heavy, or Assault).  What I mean here is if your first choice is a Heavy, then their 2nd can be either a Light, Medium, or Assault--just not another Heavy.

That is right, sports fans--you get one 'Mech and one 'Mech only.

So choose wisely.

I'll start.

My choice is the TDR-5Sb 'Royal' Thunderbolt.  A 65-ton Heavy BattleMech, the legendary Thud isn't the prettiest gal at the ball, and she ain't the fastest.  But she is tough, reliable, and has good enough firepower.

Where the black-hearted Taurian scoundrel known as Master (Sergeant) Arminas managed to find, repair, and place into service a genuine vintage SLDF Royal Thunderbolt, no one knows for sure--and Arminas ain't talking.  What is known is that he showed up a few years back in this battered and scarred war-machine and (so far, at least) has been lucky enough to avoid crippling damage that would require scrapping the irreplaceable 'Mech.

Assigned to a heavy lance tasked with direct assault, Arminas often eschews subtlety in favor of overwhelming concentrated firepower--in one noted engagement where his Lieutenant was temporarily out of communication, the NCO ordered his entire lance to intensify forward firepower . . . against a single Phoenix Hawk!

Needless to say, the Pixie went BOOM.

Although eccentric in nature (and rather obsessed with the proper application of what most others would term overkill), Arminas is a valued addition to any command.

What is your choice?

So, basically, we get one 'mech from one narrow period of time. Of the whole span of Classic Battletechnology, why restrain us at this juncture? Why not go for the gusto and open the full bag of tricks and let us pick units that represent ourselves?

Having said that, Vulture Mk IV. I know it, I love it, I use it as often as I can. If you claim that that's a "New" 'mech, I've got a bunch of Vulture Mk IV figs from MW:AOD that want to have a word with you.

Because I want to concentrate on AoW, SL, Succession Wars, and War of 3039 stuff.  If we get enough responses to fill out a unit, I might well use it to write a story around.  One where the Mercs are fighting against the Clan Invasion--kinda hard to do that if you have 'Mechs being used that aren't in production at the time the story is set!

And . . . "one narrow period of time".  ???  You can choose any design (non-Clan) from between 2439 and 3050 . . . 611 years.  Not really too narrow, you know.

Well, it is produced in 3137 . . . 87 years past my cut-off listed in the OP.  So, yeah.  It is a 'new' 'Mech and therefore an invalid choice.

I pick the BNC-3E Banshee - because nothing else says "I suck" with quite the same style and flair (or "size *does* matter" in quite the same petulant tone...).

Pilot: MechWarrior Dave Hunter

MechWarrior Hunter has served in various mercenary units without the slightest distinction for most of his adult life, and without being credited with a single confirmed kill; most superiors ascribe his continued survival in battle less to any particular skill on his part, and more on the fact that there usually are other targets, with more firepower and less armor, for the enemy to shoot at.

Cerrate Barton reporting for duty with his WHM-6D Warhammer! Formerly of the Davion Heavy Guards, Barton's particular Warhammer model, with its all-energy loadout and extra armor, is ideally suited for the mercenary lifestyle.

Note: If he survives long enough, he'll eventually upgrade to an Avatar OmniMech. Depending on when the story is set, he's gonna be waiting a long time.

Mechwarrior Kavan Clynes (mekhq generated name) comes to the bay with a Hermes II "Mirage" (a 7/11 moving 3 med laser, flamer, mg toting with decent armor, for its weight, 'mech).  Whenever possible he runs from clump of trees to clump of trees (added protection of which on more than one occasion has saved his hide) in his attempt to backstab,.... errrr I mean get the back shot on an opponent.  He will go for putting someone out of the fight rather than back shooting if the opportunity creates itself, but not if he has to expose himself from cover.  He will not hesitate to use the flamer and mg on both machine and man alike.  Speed is king.  Extra padding is better.

Do you mean the HER-2M "Mercury"?  I'll add it to the list.

Paint scheme?  Well, we don't have a parade scheme like many other units.  We use camouflage!!

:)

Seriously, any suggestions are welcome.

Well, I love very old-timey things, especially the classics, and doubly so if it is really exotic or really stands out today. Thus, MechWarrior John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt is signing up and ready to roll in his refurbished MSK-6S Mackie.

Got a name for the pilot? You know, beside Tai Dai Cultist?

Edit: Come to think of it, "Tie-dye" would be an amusing nickname.  ;D

Well I had erroneously assumed part of the charm in this project was to use forum names for the pilots.  But I like your idea.  Frederick W. "Tie-dye" Palowaski has a ring that appeals to my warped sense of humor. Especially as a light mech pilot.

And we're almost to two lances, that's great!

Non-camospec painters say "**** that for a game of marbles!" :D

Simple schemes, please ;)

How about a panzer-grey base coat with canopy done in one of those 'glowing' schemes.  And the weapon snouts/emitters/muzzles red on the business end?

If you want more, than give each company (or lance, depending on how many folks we get) a different color to adorn their right upper arm/left lower leg (i.e., gold, silver, bronze, red, blue, green, etc., etc.).

Simple enough?

Any merc command would welcome a machine that needs no ammunition based around as little numbers of parts as possible. That, and the ability to absorb damage for the rest of the team while dealing back pain to the enemy.

Cool, here is my submission for your use.

Mechwarrior Jerry Robin Williams, he is a 10 year veteran of the LCAF and the 4th Succession War.  He left the service to pursue stardom by going to Solaris VII to fight in the Arena battles.  He was there for a few years competing in lower arena battles and working for various Stables.  When he finally got bored and disillusioned, he realized that he would rather be in a real battlefield and to travel to different worlds .  So he turned mercenary, becoming as individual contractor to anyone that pays.

His Battlemech is a refitted CRS-6C Crossbow.  He found the remains of the Mech in one of the numerous junkyards in Solaris VII.  He learned to be a DIY tech when he decided to rebuild this mech while he worked as an arena mechwarrior.  Anything he could not figure out by reading a manual, he would contact some of the technicians he knew for help to rebuild it and improve on it.

To help him with the cost of rebuilding the mech, he contracted with a local video production company to document his experience in rebuilding such an ancient machine to make it ready for the modern battlefield.  He managed to earn enough from the broadcast rights that it help pay off at least a third of the cost.  Since then, he can help with repairs to his mech and also be a public relations expert in dealing with the media (as long as he is the one in front of the camera).

He likes to specialize in long range fire support, work as a team with other lance mates to take down enemy targets, and if close range is involved, he likes to get within punching and kicking distance to the enemy mech.

(If the mech does not work for you, the secondary choice would be the LGB-7Q LongBow)

Do you mean the HER-2M "Mercury"?  I'll add it to the list.

MA

If that is what it is.  I was going with the way it is listed in MekHQ/MegaMek   (Hermes II "Mirage")  Source = TRO 3039

First off, love the idea! And second here is my submission...

Leutnant Amon "Vonshroom" Blucher (age 32)

Looking for a paycheck an application for his talents and a way to get back at the clans,Amon is a stereotypical Lyran and has a near fanatical devotion to the Alliance and House Steiner. It is said he has noble blood back on Furillo. Amon does not talk much outside of combat except to his closest friends. He is easily identified by the Iron cross he wears around his neck in addition to his clean cut handsome blonde looks and piercing dark blue eyes.

Fond of wearing a knee length black leather trench coat, he is a bit of a neat freak. Amon takes great pride in his appearance and that of his beloved modified Griffin 1N Faust. Sporting an endo steel skeleton, double heat sinks, and armed with a flamer, 2 ER large lasers and an SRM6  Faust's unorthodox load out has surprised many an enemy mechwarrior. Coupled with the fact that Amon likes to load one of his SRM ammo bins with Inferno ammo.

It is unknown how he got the nickname Vonshroom, but it is said that it stems from his time with the 14th Lyran Guards. It is  also unclear why he left the guards in the first place, but none question him due to his combat performance and superior lance command tactics. Rumors say it had to do with an indiscriminate use of flamer on multiple occasions, and several scandals with much younger women. In combat he is very conservative and quick to think and react. A lover of classical music Amon does nearly all repairs to his mech himself and can often times be found in the mech bay sketching and smoking while sitting on his beloved mechs foot or blaring Wagner's operas while elbow deep in a disassembled knee actuator assembly.

How is 600 years of Mech development a narrow period of time?

As for joining the ranks of this unit

I'll go with a Talon TLN-5W.
Piloted by the infamous Virginia de Sade, a MechWarrior from the Marian Hegemony whose family escaped from the Federated Suns with their family mech.
She likes to pilot a fast mech and live a fast life.
Comments have been made comparing her lifestyle to her more famous ancestor the Marquis. [cheers]

So be it then,

Mechwarrior Callsign:  "Warclaw"
Real Name: "Fnord-Fnord-Fnord"
Mech of Choice:  JR7-31P Rattlesnake    http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Rattlesnake

Also dubbed, "The Black Prince of the Backstab" by former lance mates, the Taurian Mercenary known as Warclaw is well known for appearing at the least opportune moments for his opponents and mercilessly exploiting weak points.

Rumors that he has modified his Rattlesnake with a Void signature system or other high end electronic warfare devices have never been proven, and the warrior himself denies such.

     Preferred opponents: Heavy/Assault mechs.

Preferred tactics:  Headhunting, deep strike, ambush, behind the lines raiding, scout hunting/Counter-scouting.

Known Associates:  "Doc" Agren (Warhammer-unknown iteration), "Blackpanzer" Zi-Long (Awesome 8Q), Cliff "Numbers" P.  (unknown mech)

I don't suppose it has a date of production on that 'mech (rattlesnake)?  I have never heard of it before.

Since it is apocryphal I don't think it should be allowed as it is non-canon.

Sounds like fun...

Born on Ewanrigg, Geraint "Taff" Blethyn (random name) was a middling graduate of the Coventry Military Academy's class of 3027. A much more skilled cook than a MechWarrior, Geraint was originally assigned to one of the new "lightning companies" of the Twenty-fourth Arcturan Guards in the buildup to the Fourth Succession War, but Geraint's ability to produce edible meals from almost anything under almost any circumstances saw him spending more and more time after the war assigned to working with the support units than actually deploying in the field, something he came to deeply resent. The final straw came when he was seconded to helping provide food for a social function for senior officers and local dignitaries at the start of the local social season, an assignment that promised a series of further similar assignments for weeks at a time. After substituting chocolate from the unit's field operational ration packs for locally-sourced luxury chocolate intended for the banquet desserts, the resulting laxative-induced distress caused amongst the great and the good made it clear that Geraint wouldn't be serving beyond his initial five-year posting with the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces.

After mustering out of the LCAF in 3032 Taff found gainful employment with the mercenary unit Storm's Metal Thunder, serving with them for more than a decade before buying himself and his 'Mech out of the unit shortly after Griff Storm decided to found Norse-Storm BattleMechs Inc. in 3046.

A quiet and generally reserved MechWarrior, Taff remains tight-lipped about the origins of the vintage SPR-5F Spector he brought with him from Storm's Metal Thunder; while still willing to cook for his lancemates in the field and close friends while off-duty, the last attempt to persuade him to cook for a larger group resulted on him absconding on a four-week scouting mission of his unit's new posting. Continuing to live generally as frugally as he did during his early years as a mercenary, Taff's main interests revolve around the electronic books and periodicals he has forwarded to him from various publishing houses - particularly books on the history of the Age of War, historical romances and various forms of fusion-themed cookery - and occasional deliveries of imported foodstuffs, spices and boutique beers.

(I think that gives us most of a scout lance now?)

It's more interesting than optimal, and therefore better. O0 - Weirdo
