  • And I think it's gonna be a long, long time...
Hello class.  Yeah, I can see you're all excited to be here.  Well, too bad.  BattleMechs and aerospace fighters and fancy DropShips and JumpShips might get all the fame and glory, but let me ask you this: did you come to class today in a 'Mech?  Yeah, didn't think so.

This class is divided up into two one-semester segments.  In 205A, we'll cover more "civilian" grade vehicles, or older vehicles predating current construction standards.  In 205B, we'll cover the more conventional combat vehicles common across the Inner Sphere.

Now, obviously, there's a difference between a segway and a ground car and a land train, just like there's a difference between a tank and a submarine.  This is a lower-division class sequence, and in the upper division course sequences, you'll get the chance to go more into the weeds of specific vehicle types, should you specialize in that particular niche.  This class is about getting your feet wet, sometimes literally, with different vehicle types, so you can make a more informed decision on specialization later.

[OOC: This is a design thread for Niops-based support vehicle designs.  Like with similar threads for 'Mechs and aero, I've left the timeframe open, though obviously the most likely time when new 'Mechs designs would be considered would be in the 3150/ilClan era, where Niops has an impoverished industrial base compared to their Star League tech peak prior to the Jihad.  Thread is open to anyone who wants to post a Niops-themed design]

The Burke Defense Tank had long been a mainstay of Niopian defense planning, and the loss of its production had been felt deeply by the Niops Association Militia.  It's little wonder, then, that ENG 205B students often work with their upper-division classmen and grad students to try to devise ways to return it to production.  One ENG 205A class decided to do the same.

Starting with the truism that fusion engines for the Burke would not be available, they instead worked with the Nuclear Physics and Engineering department to develop a 12-ton pebble-bed fission powerplant and drivetrain that could propel a 75-ton vehicle at the same speeds as the original Burke.  The reinforced chassis would mass 17 tons, more than twice that of the original, using older techniques and lower grade materials, and the armor plating would add eight tons on top of that.

Armament, when compared to the original, is more limited, with a Blazer cannon replacing the triple PPCs, backed by three LRM-5s.  To provide a modicum of protection against infantry, twin machine guns were fitted.

While surprisingly capable, there are definitely drawbacks to the fission-powered Burke.  Crew size has ballooned to seven people, overall firepower has been reduced, and the modern pebble-bed reactor promises relative safety in the event of a breach, that safety is still relative, and production of the fission plants is difficult and time-consuming.  It is uncertain, therefore, whether this fission-powered Burke will reach full production/

It takes eight tons of mass to add it in.  That meant shedding the machine guns, the third LRM-5, half the LRM ammo, a ton of armor, and the Blazer, replacing the latter with three light PPC.  I might shed the CASE instead of a half-ton of armor, instead.

The Bekker Exploration Crawler is designed to be an all-environment exploration vehicle for use with the Niopian Pioneer Corps. While completely unarmed, it is an extremely flexible vehicle for scientific purposes. Like many recent vehicles built by the Niopians it is powered by a 100-rated fusion engine. A variant version using a fuel cell engine was also commissioned, trading a ton of cargo space for fuel.

OK, that's super neat, like a smaller, lighter, cheaper Cortez/Magellan/Shackleton.

If you're going to go with an odd tonnage, you really should spring for Fractional Accounting...  ^-^

That was my idea. Wanted to pander to the "science" side of the Beer Keg of Science!
