10497 Galaxy Explorer
« on: 02 August 2022, 06:08:05 »
Got it yesterday and starting lunch time started the Build, 81/2 hours later (including Brakes), many parts of the build are overly complicated more for gate keeping (keeping younger builders away from the set) than what i think was their intended purpose of aesthetics. pick the model up at the balance point from above and it comes apart before it comes up too far.

it is a good looking model, but if they had of lowered the part count and complexity with a correspondingly lower price point, more in line of a modernization of the original set, they could have made more sales to a wider consumer base.

All in All they have made one hell of a collectors item but less of a toy for kids big and small.

Thanks for the review!  My 11-year-old kids have been playing with my original kit and asking me for the new one.

Might put Lego in the title.

vs

I remember this in the Lego book I had as a kid in the 80s, it went from Castle, to City, and then to Space.  The original set was there with space and you could look at the images and try to build it with what you had.

I paid 180 OZ Bucks for it  and think it was well worth it.

It would make a good Family project if your kids are advanced builders.

I'm really looking forward to building this set (it is sitting on the game table currently) and I'd really like to put together my original, this set, and Benny's Spaceship-Spaceship-SPACESHIP!!!

A while back they had this gorgeous pirate ship set based on the first pirate ship they ever released. Even though it was two hundred and fifty bucks it took a considerable act of will not to dig out the emergency credit card.

I also look at current sets vs older sets and ponder . . .

. . . a lot of the current sets for City and Castle at least seem to be more like facades rather than real buildings with depth.

I went looking for older sets for buildings, the vehicles are still pretty good.

I'm wrestling with the same although I think that castle will be around for a while.

Yeah, no kidding.

Turns out Lego has alternate instructions for the Galaxy Explorer to make either the new versions of the One Man Space Ship and the Patrol Craft.  Unfortunately, to build all three you'll need three sets.
