The F-20 was a pretty great updrade from the F-5, just lost out to the F-16.

it was an excellent fighter killed by political collateral damage.

to be honest, i half expected the Iranians to try and reinvent it.

I don't know if I'd go that far. It certainly doesn't offer much over the Hornet or Viper, which was what most countries wanted.

Northrop might have gotten more traction if they had come up with an upgrade kit for F-5Es for the budget-conscious, but it hasn't been until recently than F-5 operators have been really looking for a replacement / the market for that class of plane has opened up with the FA-50 and JF-17, and the JF-17's sold in fairly limited numbers anyway.

which at the time, were banned from export. which was unpopular with certain circles of the american political and military industrial community. the F-20 was designed to basically be an F-16 analog meant for export (albeit one slightly less capable, per the export rules at the time) with parts commonality with the existing F-5 stocks many of the allied nations already had.

the collateral damage was when those political circles and the military industrial lobbyists managed to get the F-16's export ban lifted (at least for the older models), which led to the retired F-16A/B's being sold off at lower prices than the F-20 due to them being refurbished existing stocks.

thus why i called it 'political collateral damage'.. the politics involved had nothing to do with the F-20 itself, so much as politicians and the aviation industry wanting to make money off the retired F-16's and loosen the tech export limits, but in the process it killed any interest in the F-20.

I mean, it's not from Northrop. Maybe a stubfighters post is warranted  :D

I was being cheeky.

Well, that and since you got to the F-20 first, I wanted to give a shout out to my other late-80s light-strike/fighter love.

Some days your luck is just out...

An IJN Kawanishi H8K being shot down by a USN PB4Y--better known to many as a "Navy Liberator":

Here is the aircraft in a better moment (immediately prior to being shot down):

Tough lines to be stalked, then jumped and shot to Hell, by a bloody Lib.

Hold on I want to make sure I have this right . . . a Liberator heavy bomber basically fired a broadside in the air at a Japanese flying boat?

a variant, it looks like: PB4Y-2 Privateer

looking at the pics, it has two dorsal turrets, a waist gun blister per side, and a ball turret nose gun. so i'd guess its best firepower could be concentrated broadside on.

This was a PBY4-1, which looked like a traditional Lib:

www.history.navy.mil/content/history/museums/nmusn/explore/photography/wwii/wwii-atlantic/battle-of-the-atlantic/aviation/pb4y-1.html

The second picture was apparently taken just prior to the engagement, so I will presume the nose guns (usually in the ball-shaped Erco turret) dorsal turret, and traditional waist guns did the deed--probably from the rear port quarter. The Emily's carried guns too, up to and including 5x20mm, so they weren't something to just ignore or take lightly.

Oh, I am not disagreeing with any of that . . . but still, a mid-air broadside rather than something like the A-26 which had a lot of forward guns in the nose.

I was just looking for A-26 pictures to make sure I remembered correctly about the MGs and saw that . . . guess the nose gear collapsed from a bad landing- you can see the props are all bent to crap.

I don't know if it's something about the way you did the images, or a problem with my browser settings, but I can see your first three images, but not the last two. Did you link/import them differently?

That is quite the squadron-meet.

There is always room for a strike aircraft that can lift 2-4 times a B-17's* bomb-load and drop it on somebody 1500 klicks away.

Here are some at rest:

*B-17 general bomb-loads ranged from 2-4000 kilos (with a possible maximum of just under 8000kg but I've never heard that being carried on normal missions) versus an A-6's oft-carried 8000+kg max load.
