I know its an older release now but I really enjoyed it. As I mentioned in the What Are We Watching thread especially the Union Class dropship that the main ship for all the crew.

So many othere little easter eggs and references from other films too.

I had a burst of creativity over the weekend just gone and made this from it as I noticed the similarities:

I enjoyed the film.  My wife couldn't care less about space stuff though.

The only thing is that I don't think it represents what a 1995 scifi film would actually look like.  It's very much a 21st century film, but I can accept that the Buzz Lightyear toys in Toy Story were from that film.

My favorite part of it was involving time dilation when moving close to or at the speed of light.  It's hard for me to wrap my head around, but it seems to be supported with clock comparisons from Earth and the ISS.  It had an impact on the story too.  I'm not entirely clear with where Old Man Buzz came from though - an alternate universe, or FTL shenanigans?

Anyway I don't think time dilation is going to work as a defense for a speeding ticket in traffic court though.  "Your honor, I was speeding to take full advantage of time dilation to prolong my life."

My one problem with it is that if it's truly the movie Andy went to see in 1995, he wouldn't have wanted a Buzz Lightyear toy, he'd have wanted the cat.

Lots of other things demonstrate time dilation, it's real. Relativity doesn't make common sense (but is more common sensical than quantum.)

Now go listen to "39" by Queen. It's space filk, talking about just this.

What the?!?! That... is inspired. Great job!!...

As for the film; I liked it more than I thought I would. It was a good time. Loved the supporting mix of half-beats. I thought Taika Waititi was a lot funner in this than he was in Love & Thunder... My biggest disappointment was the tropey canned villain you saw coming from 16 miles away... arg.
Still, I would recommend it even with it's flaws. Gimme some Starman, tho!

Cheers buddy.

I have a few other trailer mashups on there that I think work almost as well as that one.

My son watched this with me and said "THAT VERSION LOOKS AMAZING."  we both agreed the original is fine- nothing wrong with it, it's cool.  But a tween-level HORROR film? GOOD LORD, how cool (and unique) would THAT be??  very nice work!

First, AWESOME mashup!

That said, I saw Lightyear with my (almost) 18-year old niece this morning, and it really felt phoned in by Pixar.  There were definitely entertaining parts, but the story felt more like a checklist, and I just wanted to scream "WTF?!" when future Sox was brutally murdered with NO mention afterward.

It in no way feels like a 90s sci-fi movie.  And given that it's supposed to be the movie that Andy saw in Toy Story that got him hooked on Buzz Lightyear, that's a problem.

Cheers Five and Daryk.

I just uploaded a comparison video with my version and with the original Prometheus trailer if you're interested in seeing how similar some of the shots are....

on a related note... am I the only one confused by the ending...

literally the entire "inital plot" involved Buzz trying, repeatedly, to test fuel crystals. at the end he has a single crystal but the laptop with the formula was destroyed, strongly implying that the crystal was "one of a kind"

but the movie ends with  Buzz and crew being made space rangers and sent off to "protect the galaxy

the ONLY conclusion I can draw is that the settlement managed to recover the crystal formula from the laptop and have been sitting on it.

My thinking on that is: Sox has a copy of the formula in his own memory8)

What Daryk said. He should be easily able to recreate it.
