So I'm Moving to Florida - By Boat
« on: 18 November 2020, 18:57:07 »
From SE Michigan and Detroit, I'll now be living in Sebring, FLA.  Wish me luck!

I was wondering, though.  Are there any BT players near by?  I would love to get in on a game, or just talk BT.  Like we do here, lol.

I don't know.  Michigan skeeters are of the brown and black tiger stripe variety.  They are pretty big.

I'm only renting for three months, but I might buy soon.  Just watching the prices.  I was looking at Cape Coral for the future.  And getting a Can Am Spyder.  I'll  enjoy the sun on a bike like that.

There are some active players in the Cape Coral/Ft Myers area...

The important thing to remember about Florida is that every body of water that's at least two feet across has an alligator in it.  This is not limited to outdoors.

well me being me i like gators....between two pieces of rye and on bbq...
gator tail in nice tangy bbq sauce or with hot sauce with some hot peppers with green or red peppers is to die for(some folks smear it in lemon juice first)
that is only reason i would visit florida no need to look for fast food joint when food comes to you

Yep.  And in Sebring there are lakes everywhere.  This is Florida's lake district.  It's nice, and I even have a Mercury inflatable dingy with an 8 hp motor, so I am equipped.  Just no swimming.  Which is fine by me, I can swim well, but I'm not into wrestling gators.

I can attest to this. I was in Florida for a work trip, there was a small drainage area in between the parking lot and the building. This guy was hanging out there for a week or so, before someone could be brought in to relocate him. He was prob 4-5 long, a wee little one.

Craig

I was looking into a trailer park on a canal.  And a few others.  I know there are lots of duplexes in the area, too, that can be very affordable.

The place I was looking at in Sebring was $2,400 per month.  It's still cheaper than living like a vagabond in motels every night like I'm doing right now.  But I am having fun traveling.

If you plan to stay, have a plan for hurricane season so you can evacuate safely, or hunker down for a decent period of time.  Durable windows, maybe second floor (to reduce the chance of furniture being flooded), and a generator in case you lose power (and make sure the generator is outdoors).

Here is a good guide.

Thanks everyone, for your concern and comments.  I'll definitely miss Michigan, though I will be driving back up to get more stuff to bring down here.  And my family is there.

Where are you driving from? I know from experience that once you hit Florida -- you still have to drive 6 hours to reach Cape Coral.....

I drove from the Detroit area.  Last night I stayed in the Sebring area, and right now I'm checking a condo in LaBell which is 50 or 60 miles from Cape Coral.  So don't mind my complaints, the worst driving is behind me.  Until later when I go back to Michigan to get more of my things.

Whatever you do, avoid Lehigh Acres..... That area has a bad rep and not a place to live.....

Thanks for the intel.  I'll be looking everywhere.  I'm at the Drury inn at Ft. Myers for a few days.  Lots of properties around here along the canals.  I'm liking it because I like to canoe, and the canals are perfect to explore.

I don't know the market, but the real question is how long you are planning to stay somewhere.

if you are planning to settle for 5-7 years or more, it may be worth trying to buy rather than renting, if your credit is decent.
if you are looking at buying, the suggestion I would have for "upgrades" is if the place has a south facing roof, solar, and the equivalent of a powerwall might make for a good long term upgrade.

Yep, my rental lease was going to be for just three months.  Enough time to buy property, or at least a condo.

I will look into solar.  This is the sunshine state, after all.

I close on selling my Condo tomorrow.  After 15 years of dealing with an HOA, I would rather nail my sensitive bits to a chair than buy another condo.  In order to sell, I had to talk to an attorney that specializes in HOAs...  You would be better off buying a lean-to in the everglades.

It wasn't just the HOA being uptight. It was a board acting like fascists' and just voting to decide things that I had to add on the inside of my unit for the "benefit of all."  1. a hot water circulation device.  Never consulted me about it, just told me one day that since my unit was on the end I would have to add it "for the good of all".  2. Two weeks from closing, told me that the fireplace that was part of the unit for 40 years, had to be removed.

Holy terror!  That sounds like a bunch of suburban meglomaniacs running the place.  No, I'm looking for the kind of place I can keep my canoe and my little boat.  In Cape Coral, there are canals everywhere,  whole giant neighborhoods with every house having canal access, maybe even a small dock.  Heck, a lot of the houses are no more than double wides on permanent foundations.  I don't mind that.

But I have an open mind, and I really want to live here below the frostline.
