This pretty much is my journal.  I share it with you all.  And I post on FakeBook too.  Maybe when we get to the islands, I'll do a YouTube channel.

Nice thing about being in the middle of nowhereville is All The Stars!  The sky is painted with the Milky Way.

So glad I have bars on my phone enough to post about it.

Take pictures! I live New England, there so much light pollution here when I was kid I thought the stars were dying.

Night time photography is really tough even with a good camera.

Nothing like the night sky over the water though, it's an amazing sight, and when there's no wind, no cloud, stars reflecting in the mirror smooth surface, you can't really tell where the sky ends and the water begins.

Damnit, now I miss being at sea!

Thanks!  An hour earlier and it was like zombie fog.

Anyway, we motored from dawn til dusk, and made it to a place called Kingfisher Bay Marina in Demopolis, Alabama.   Very nice place here, and aptly named in my opinion.   

We're taking two days off due to holidays and cold weather on Friday.   Until then, check out these white limestone cliffs at Epes, Alabama,  and below that, a shot of a barge on pristine mirror-like water.

I know it!  The place should be called Dover, Alabama.   Would be more fitting.

It's going to be 71 here in Demopolis today.  But tomorrow will be a high of 52.  Saturday, when we get back on it, will be low 60's.

The low last night here in Arlington VA was below 30.  Glad you're having warmer weather, being you're immersed in water.  My first tour, we endured dry dock in Connecticut in the winter.... brrrr....

Michigan winters have me more or less immune to all but the most extreme cold.

But still, being on a boat makes it automatically feel ten degrees colder.  So Friday we're staying in port.  Also, I'll have wifi to download the latest goodies to be had.

Aint that the truth! So cold when you're surrounded by water, especially inland away from the sea.

I'm a meteorologist by training, and yes, the amount of heat water can absorb with minimal change in temperature is incredible, as is it's ability to absorb heat through conduction.  And then don't get into evaporation or condensation ...

i've joked for years I live next to the biggest heat sink in the world...

And I feel all this in my bones as we motor down the river system.   

Closely related: we have a Reverse Cycle heating and cooling system on the boat.  It sucks in water and uses it to either cool or heat, depending on setting.  But it doesn't work good on these rivers because they are so damned muddy!  When we get to Mobile and the marina there, we're going to clean it out and get it running.

Let's review where I'm at, shall we?



Dad and I are just below where the Tennessee-Tombigbee intersects the Tombigbee and Black Warrior Rivers in western Alabama.  We are about 4 and a half days out of our immediate goal, Mobile, Alabama.

I don't get tired of seeing that because I can almost taste the fresh caught shrimp.

I will likely not be able to post for the next four days, but I will if I can.  This part of the journey is a true backwater.

Wooohooo!  I have half a bar on my phone.  Woke up before dawn today.  We got going and went until after sundown.  Sixty seven miles total.  That's a high water mark on a sailboat. 

Anyway, I'll try to report again tomorrow.  Three and a half days to go!

Made it to mile marker 97, so only two days from our destination.   I add a half a day just to be safe.

Check out these bluffs we just passed right before we anchored (and note how muddy the river water looks).

That's a pretty slow moving river to be that muddy, it seems...
