Old school Mechwarrior... really, really, old...
« on: 03 September 2020, 04:11:02 »
Thanks to the social interaction difficulties of 2020, my semi-regular Battletech-Mekton rpg campaign is suspended indefinitely... so me, my uncle, my 16 year old cousin, and a family gamer friend, have decided to play a weekly home Battletech tactical/RPG campaign.

After 3 years I finally get to be a player instead of the GM!! Yay!  :D
And better yet, our friend who is running it (we'll call him Dave...) is using Mechwarrior 1st edition...  ;D
He wants to keep it simple and keep it in 3025. Done and done! (Although he has made a few small rules changes for more character creation flexibility)

We are playing as a new mercenary company on Galatea. Each player (me my uncle, and my cousin) will make a main character who is a Lance Comander, and 3 "Lancemates" NPCs (who can also be a pool of replacement main characters if our first ones get stomped on by an Atlas...)
Each of us gets to make our own Lance however we want with the rules (including transferred Character Points) and using whatever theme or style we like and our own rolled mech choices; we are not optimizing the company mech selection as a whole, in other words.
I was elected to be the Company Commander due to my experience in the Btech world... we are doomed...  xp
We each submitted names for the unit and then did a blind vote with the help of a few extra confused family members who were wondering why we were getting them involved in our "weird toy soldier thing"... 1: The Destroyers, 2: Doom Patrol, and 3: Crash & Burn Inc.
Crash & Burn Inc. won.
(I bet you oldies already see were my theme is going....  8))
We also decided on a black, grey, and blue, urban camo scheme with yellow stripe trim, since I'll be doing all the painting when the new minis arrive (sadly mostly Wave 2...)

CRASH & BURN INC. was founded by Mathew Sikes and Alexander Raskolnikov on Galatea in August 3024. Both men are former Solaris VII competitive Mechwarriors. Sikes, after a brief stint in the AFFS, joined a minor Stable in the Black Hills district. Raskolnikov had worked for a minor privately owned Stable in Cathy for 5 years already when Sikes arrived. Within months a small rivalry had formed between these two Stables in the minor league arena circuit. Sikes in his white Crusader with red trim had met Raskolnikov's black and gold Orion a half a dozen times, each winning one fight and the others ending in draws. Their dislike for each other was spilling out of the arena into the clubs, bars, and press conferences, with blows landed every time they met. It all made great press for the Stables involved.
Shortly into thier second season as rivals, a series of suspicious losses and two deaths among Sikes Stable at the hands of Alexander's Stable prompted Sikes to investigate. He discovered "Big Tex", one of the senior talent managers and part owner of his stable was being bribed by the Liao secret police to leak them inside info on their tactics and tech, and even actively sabotaging one of their mechs!
In a drunken encounter with Alexander in a bar after one if Sikes teammates was killed in a fight against Raskolnikov's teammates, Sikes laid out his accusations of cheating and his evidence to Akexander. Surprisingly the Liao mechwarrior was enraged by the proof of cheating by his own people, having believed his victories had always been his alone. Alexander wanted to go and confront his employer immediately but Sikes convinced him he'd just be benched and probably "silenced"... permanently...
So they hashed out a plan to expose the corruption within both their Stables and make sure they both survived and even profited from it.
A month later, when the two met in the arena again, they fought like tigers! The ruined city blocks arena was awash in missile explosions and laser beams, but attentive oddsmakers noticed the actual damage was minimal. After 15 minutes of wild maneuvers and mass pyrotechnic weapons fire, both mechs shut down from overheat within seconds of eachother and both warriors broadcast their capitulation almost simultaneously. Another draw... the crowds were riotous, both Stable masters were apoplectic with fury.
An hour later at the post fight press briefing, surrounded by cameras and arena guards, Sikes and Raskolnikov both took the podium and revealed the two Stables conspiracy of corruption. They offered numerous recorded admissions from both Stable Masters as well as records of payoffs and leaked secrets as evidence. Then, in a frenzy of screaming reporters and enraged Stable Leaders, the pre-paid guards rushed the two men out of the room and into protective custody.
6 weeks later both Stables were disbanded and dozens of personnel were kicked off the planet. Political connections preventing them from criminal prosecution. Sikes and Raskolnikov collected their winnings from their last fight (they had both bet heavily through proxies on a draw against high odds. They made a small fortune.) and caught the next dropship off of Solaris with their mechs. The two men, former enemies, but not quite friends yet, shook hands on a plan to be partners in a new Merc unit, and headed for Galatea....

My Character and Lance:

Captain Mathew "Achilles" Sikes

27 years old. Commander. Crash & Burn Inc. Mercenary Command. Galatea.

Sikes is a bitter, disillusioned, young man. His hopes of glory as a Gladiator ruined by greed and scheming House politics. He is a mediocre Company commander due to his lack of trust in his newly hired subordinates and his hard earned pessimism. He is loyal to the members of his Command lance as they mostly have a shared history but he is only slowly thawing to his two new Lieutenants and their pilots. His business partner and XO, Alexander Raskolnikov, is his closest "friend", and the tensions from their former violent rivalry are still simmering low between them. Alexander's rough and aggressive personality rubs Sikes sideways, but in battle he knows he can count on his bombastic partner.
He trained in a secondary military academy in Davion space, graduated in the middle range of his class, and served 4 uninspiring years with the AFFS, piloting his dead father's CRD-3R Crusader. The mech is a 150 year old refurbished relic, but it's in perfect working order, for now.

XO Alexander "Cossack" Raskolnikov

34 years old. Executive Officer, Crash & Burn Inc. Mercenary command.

Raskolnikov never served in the military. His mother was a Merc for a small unit based in Tikonov that has worked for the Capellans for over a century. Her unit was wiped out when he was 19 and attending a war college on Tikonov. He learned she was killed and the family mech, a Marauder, was lost as salvage to the Taurian pirates who ambushed them in a border mission. He dropped out of the war school a month before graduation and left the planet.
He ended up on Solaris VII six years later with a few new scars, a drinking problem, and a beat up old Quickdraw made mostly of scrap. Cashing in on his nationality,  he quickly signed on with a small second rate Stable owned by a wealthy fellow Capellan. For the next five years he was a moderately successful Gladiator, but he lacked ambition. He never cared about being a champion as long as there was always money for drink and women, and plenty of both! He was a regular in all the seediest bars in Solaris city and loved to boast about his wins in the arena. However, he NEVER talks about his years missing among the stars, and will get violent if pushed.
He was happily drinking himself into oblivion until he met young, brash, idealistic, Mathew Sikes in the arena and got his butt kicked. Suddenly, winning mattered. Glory mattered. Revenge mattered. Then Sikes ruined everything. He doesn't love the idea of becoming a Merc but he finds himself oddly trusting Sikes judgement and even admiring the man's relentless drive and ingrained integrity. Of course, he cant resist tweaking the kids nose every time he can! It's good for his ego.

Mechwarrior Emily "Athena" Patterson

24 years old. Mechwarrior. Crash & Burn Inc. Mercenary command.

Emily is the daughter of Bob Patterson: a Solaris native and lifelong technician for one Davion stable after another. She spent her youth at the stables, crawling on and inside Battlemechs. As a teenager, she paid for a two year mechwarrior training program focused on the games of Solaris. When she was 20, her father finally retired and cashed out his net savings to buy her a much used and only partially operational Centurion mech. She used her own money and her own skills with a spanner to bring the machine up to fighting trim. She also signed a 3 year contract with a small Davion stable and used the signing bonus to finish her rides repairs. Being the very definition of a rookie, her fights were few and minor for the first year, and she made most of her pay as a tech for her stable mates. But in her second year, she was moved into the second primary team where she met newcomer, Mathew Sikes.
Sikes was older, skilled, and disciplined, in her eyes he was a veteran Mechwarrior. She was attracted to him immediately. But she was raised fairly conservative and her father taught her you dont date a coworker; its unprofessional. They became casual friends within the stable but Sikes was singularly focused on becoming a champion and making it into the A list matches and didn't socialize much with the rest if his team.
When Sikes and Akexander dropped the bombshell of the collusion to cheat the games, Emily was in shock. Shed had no idea anything was going on in the background. She had known the two pilots who were killed, and she hadn't liked the Stables co-owner Big Tex much (he could get handsy if they were alone), but a traitor in the Liao's pocket???
After the storm of press and indictments passed, she knew she'd never work on Solaris again. She would always be seen as tainted and no Stable would trust she and every other member wasn't in on the cheating scheme. She overheard Sikes making plans with Alexander Raskolnikov of all people and made up her mind. She said her goodbyes to her father, cashed out every penny she had, and loaded herself and her Centurion on the next dropship bound for Galatea. Just three days behind Sikes.
Two months later and she was Sikes first hire for his new unit. He was happy to see her and laughed when he heard story of chasing him from system to system, but she could see he had changed. He carried scars from Solaris. Scars in his soul, and he wouldn't heal those quickly. And even as only his friend she is determined to support him all she can. And try to save him from the crazy Capellan partner he seemed to rely on so much!!

Mechwarrior Jonathan "Grimm" Christiansen

38 years old. Mechwarrior. Crash & Burn Inc. Mercenary command.

Jon Christiansen joined the LCAF a bit older than usual, he was 25 when he went to the War College and graduated to years later. He was assigned to a reserve regiment as a reserve mechwarrior. He shared a State-Owned Archer with another reservist. His career was uneventful for years, but he was happy. Then in 3023 his regiment was attached to a line unit and sent on a series of raids along the Combine border. It was his first real taste of action and he liked it. The thrill and excitement. His Battalion was sent in a circuit of raids designed to prepare the way for later attacks by more capable veteran units. At first losses were high, but the experience gained hardened the rest. Christiansen tallied seven mech kills in nine months and had become the permanent Mechwarrior assigned to his Archer.
On the final raid of the campaign before the regiment retreated to the staging world and prepared to back up the main attack force, Jon saw an opportunity to change his fortunes: a Drac Panther half trapped under a fallen building and abandoned by its pilot. He paused in his retreat back towards their waiting dropships, and quickly dug the mech out with the Archers big hands. The delay made him the units unlikely rear guard. He bodily tossed the light mech over his Archers shoulder and went as fast as he could to the LZ, laying down constant fire with his rear mounted medium lasers. He was the last mech up the ramp before the ship took off, dumping his prize on the bay floor with a thunderous crash and locking the Archer into its mech bay with a swagger.
Thanks to the rights of salvage and his exemplary performance during the campaign, the Panther became his, and Jon transferred to a front line unit. After his tour was over and his unit was stood down for garrison duty, he didn't want to go back to marching practice and boredom. So after weeks of weighing his options, he resigned his post and left for Galatea, knowing he could stay in the action as a merc.
Jon met Alexander Raskolnikov in a bar on his second night on Galatea. They closed out the bar trading battle stories, and staggered out together into the early dawn light. A week later he signed on with Crash & Burn Inc. (Despite the terrible name!), and so far he's been satisfied with his new bosses. Raskolnikov is a bombastic blowhard but he's also honest and smart and knows how to plan an Op, and Sikes has a good head on his shoulders and real leadership potential once he gets over what happened on Solaris.
Christiansen loves his Panther and sinks every cent into keeping it in perfect condition. He fights aggressively but not recklessly, and he can usually be found wading into the thick of it right behind Raskolnikov, covering the XOs back as they charge into the fire.

You get bonus points for involving the confused family members!  :)
"That's Lieutenant Faceplant to you, Corporal!"

Things that I have learnt through clicking too fast on 'Move Done' on MegaMek: Double-check the CF of the building before jumping onto it, check artillery arrival times before standing in the neighbouring hex, and don't run across your own minefield.

"Hmm, I wonder if I can turn this into a MM map."
