(Answered) Society Main Building Block: Trey or Sept?
« on: 15 August 2022, 08:57:50 »
The Wars of Reaving Supplemental p. 2 states that they Trey was the smallest formation independently deployed on combat missions by the Society (excepting irregular missions such as assassinations and the like). This would, in theory put them in the same position as a lance or Star for the purposes of the force/unit movement and construction rules presented in Alpha Strike, BattleForce, and several other publications. In that case, though, there's the problem that deploying a full Sept means the command Un is on its own outside of a unit/sub-force.

For the purposes of Lance/Star Movement, force construction, BattleForce unit construction, and other similar rules, what is the equivalent organizational unit for the lance or Star? If the answer is the Trey, is there a general rule of thumb to follow regarding the command Un of a Sept?

Because of their unique organizational system, the answer to this is a bit complex.

The base force-building unit (for simplicity we'll call it a "lance" here) varies by unit type, and is whichever grouping contains at least three units.  This means that a BattleMech-containing "lance" is a Trey, and for all other unit combinations, the "lance" is an Un.

In the case of a BattleMech operating as the command unit of a Sept, or 1-2 mechs operating as part of a combined-arms Trey, each mech is an independent unit by itself, and as far as formation-building rules go that mech does not benefit from being a part of any 'lance'.

The detrimental effects this has on force cohesion was something the inexperienced Society commanders had no way of foreseeing.

I see. Many thanks for the thorough answer.

EDIT: I'm assuming Battle Armor "lances" are also Treys, since an Un is one squad?
