TO on page 221 says this about the results of a successful sensor detection:
"However, just because your sensors have picked up a target doesn’t mean the target is visible. Once a sensor has revealed a unit, standard LOS must be established to the unit before it can be revealed."

What exactly does that mean? Does the player just know there is a unit in that hex? Does he know the unit type? Weightclass? Tonnage? Chassis? Is it dependent on the type of sensor used to detect the unit?

Detecting a unit with sensors (of any kind) only reveals that unit’s location: i.e. you have a “blip”. The unit must still be visually detected as normal before it is fully revealed and placed on the map.

Exactly: as it says, you only learn the location of a unit.  Think of it as a speck on the radar.

Note that the fact that it was detected by X sensor device in itself reveals something (i.e. seismic sensors mean it's not a VTOL, etc).

What about elevation for non-ground units or units in buildings? Is that revealed?
And is the player controlling the detected units aware that they have been detected?

1.  All sensors save seismic will give you a return of the detected unit's height in levels, with elevations translating into levels on a 1-to-1 basis.  It's up to the detecting player to decide if the terrain is really that high and he's detecting a ground unit, or if he's detecting something up in the air.
