Title: (Answered) Darkness, searchlights, and aerospace on ground mapsheets
Post by: dgorsman on 07 February 2021, 14:40:12
This involves both TW and TacOps, so please move to where it is best suited.

With the aerospace units on ground mapsheet, Total Warfare (corrected fifth printing) page 91 and ground-to-air attacks page 107.  The ground-to-air range and target hex uses the closest point on the flight path.

Searchlights can be used to limit the penalties to darkness modifiers in TacOps (corrected second printing, old omnibus edition) page 57.  Searchlights follow the firing arc of the location where they are mounted, typically torso/forward for Mechs and turret for vehicles.

Can a ground unit illuminate an airborne aerospace unit with a searchlight?

Do the range limits on searchlights (TacOps, 10 hexes for handheld/30 hexes for mounted) apply to illuminating aerospace targets? So an aerospace unit at elevation 6 and 20 hexes away (6 x 2 + 20 = 32 hexes) is out of range for both types?

Assuming the aerospace unit ends its movement on the ground mapsheet, does the end hex of the flight path have to be in the firing arc of the searchlight or can it be any hex along the flight path that is in the firing arc?

When a ground unit illuminates an aerospace unit, does that effect apply to:

If another ground unit attacks the same aerospace unit in a different hex, without the benefit of a searchlight, is the aerospace unit still considered illuminated?

**MOD NOTE** Moving to TacOps since the questions are night/searchlight focused.

This is correct.

Any hex along the flight path.

When a ground unit illuminates an aerospace unit, does that effect apply to:
the entire flight path
the entire flight path, but only up to the range of the searchlight
the portion of the flight path covered by the firing arc of the searchlight
the portion of the flight path covered by the firing arc of the searchlight, but only up to the range of the searchlight
only the closest hex in the flight path

The portion of the flight path covered by the firing arc of the searchlight, but only up to the range of the searchlight.

The aircraft is only considered illuminated if the hex along the flight line that the second ground unit attacks is within the portion illuminated by the first.
