Title: Terrain Hex Pack in progress
Post by: Whitar on 21 November 2013, 17:21:15
So, after a while from hobby, I continue long delayed work on my terrain :D

Those are exactly map sheet compatible tiles.
I added more structures for city and subburb, refined the texture layouts. I have some more building ideas, so will update once something will be ready. All that's present is enough to set up a city surround (HQ buildings, offices, power stations, factories-hangars and living blocks)
When I add some more stuff to those three sheets, I'll combine them into a downloadable archive

Need suggestions on terrain types from you guys!
Let me know if you're interested in this project, cause I plan to print those out, doublesided, on cardstock  ;)

I don't play with hexes but these look good brother. Nice work.

Thanks! I always liked hex terrain. BT is a board game, not a wargame as I think of it, and this board has to be designed well, as all other game pieces. I need to print those out and test during game. I plan to make modular map sets, with no pre-set terrain, you can make any custom layout. For that I'll need a clear hex map with 'landscape' texture (grass, desert,  whatever) and sets of terrain templates (hills, mountains, waters, trees and all other stuff). It will come in near future, as a world simmilar to Terra conditions, with vast green lands. Then the desert world, polar world, all with unique building types. This idea came from playing the SEGA game. Soon I'll post more, visit the thread once in a while;)

Ok, a quick update for today  ;)
Terrain is turning out as I wanted, with crisp detail and nice texture.

What are most common terrain types in Inner Sphere?  ::) I assume Earth'like enviroments are rather rare?

Samples of my desert canyon, polar tundra and green/tropical world

Very good. But I think that the third one needs to have white hexes in order to contrast.

Yep, working on it now. It will be a grassy valley with clear terrain
Unfortunatelly I had to reconsider the process and combine software to get where I want. I'll update the thread soon

And I thought I had the most work with the top view buildings, now I see that terrain is taking a lot of wasted time on texture settings and rendering.. I use Bryce, but I'm so slow in it

I like what i see so far. Those buildings are great. And while i tend to use 3D buildings on my hexmaps in the meanwhile i would give them a try. You don't plan to add them to HM Map ? ;)
Title: Re: Terrain Hex Pack in progress - 1st update
Post by: Whitar on 25 November 2013, 09:02:30
Thanks for interest!
Nop, those are going to be included in my map set with clear green terrain map, with all those counters here too

(http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad93/whitarmusic/Counters_2_zps2667cf1d.jpg) (http://s925.photobucket.com/user/whitarmusic/media/Counters_2_zps2667cf1d.jpg.html)

But you can use then in HHM if you need so  O0

By the way, guys, give me some ideas about counters, what else could I add? Salvage markers, more difficult terrain types, maybe movement indicators (walked, jumped, ran)?

Will appresciate any input! As this project is growing big, and I meen at least three A4 sheets of terrain tiles and markers, also the first map is huge, 4 sheets of 17x15 hexes - 89x110 cm, I'm loosing focus on small and usefull features, or I already missed something important  :P

As I mentioned, after the city on clear valley terrain (grassy with no hills, as in quick start rules), I will proceed to desert or polar map, depends on the technique I'll use, and those will have their own structures/counters sets, including height levels made as tiles, so the map is not preset and modifiable
Hope that makes sense)

Title: Re: Terrain Hex Pack in progress - 2nd update
Post by: Wotan on 25 November 2013, 12:18:25
The last sample you showed is not that useful i think. I understood you want everything done in same style. But for me as player there are already similar game markers with the last Hex Packs. Wood, Rubble, Rough and Ruins exist. Not sure about craters.
And one hint regarding the bridge - what is really a good idea. But most rivers on official maps run from one hex side to another hex side. But never from one corner to another. So that marker will not fit on official cards that well. And one more idea, if you plan to add river markers. I hate each and every river on official maps limited to one hex wide. Maybe you can consider to make some riverline markers - also usable as beach markers. That in mind a river that spans more than one hex would also be usefull. ;)

Waterfalls, rapids or some landing stages could be great. Canals with locks. Water mills for poor worlds.
Tunnel entrances
Dedicated sublevel markers - mostly you got markers for hills.
Train stations ? Markers for single rails or a number of rails as on train stations ?
Electrical towers with overhead cables ?
Some years back i created fun park elements for HM Map. Was funny to see my group stomping around that area not to inflict damage.
Monumentals of any kind ? Churches ?

You asked for ideas.  :D
Title: Re: Terrain Hex Pack in progress - 2nd update
Post by: Whitar on 25 November 2013, 13:14:39
Great! Some food for my mind  O0
Well, I don't intend to replace oficial maps or hex packs (I love the dropship temlate, for example), as those are plenty. But as fo myself, mostly all of those don't suit my taste in terms of design as a game piece. Why using same old 80s graphics in new products (I meen hex packs and new maps)? Why no redesign, incorporating CG? My only guess is that it was a fast, not prior product as it actually is. But, maps are not secondary pieces, are they?
Hey, sculpt some hills in 3d, lay down some textures, we have so many MW games, with tonns of terrain.. Nop, they had to print old drawings on new cardboard.. Not my cup of tea. Maybe it's not important, somebody enlighten me  :P

I'm not complaining, only sit and make my own, bit by bit learning some stuff and experimenting ;) That's a good practice fo me.
Ok, lirycs aside  :D

Rivers: I do want to make those, not tied to the map, in modular counters. All other suplementary design, like briges and stuff, will be added later. Need to start working on those too. Glad you said about river hex sides, I lost that aspect in woods tiles I make now  :)
As for other tips, are those churches and railway stations so usefull in game matters? I meen, if there is a point making some objectives, they better be military bases, hangars, SLDF bunkers, all that's worth fighting for. Yes, starports  [drool]
You must consider it should be interesting in top view. I have no skill in 3d modeling, anyway it could take forever to craft every piece, just to use it in orthogonal projection.

My reference is Sega Genesis Battletech game, and Mechcommander, of cource. I have the MC2 open source with game materials and models, but it's cheating.

Thank you for your ideas, I'm checking this thread all the timefor more feedback

Ok, what I have so far  8)

Some more bits and the first set will be done. I'll think about hills, as an addon later  :P Any need for fire/smoke markers?

In this pack you get: 4 standart size map sheets 17x15 hexes, 1 forest (light, heavy) template A4 sheet (you can print as many as you want, cut and assemble in desirable configuration), 1 terrain counter A4 sheet (half done), 2 various urban (light, medium, heavy) template A4 sheets

That's all for my hex pack. At least I depleted my imagination resource for this week ::)

Same reason lots of the mechs still have their 1980s visual design. Any time CGL does something new, they risk old fans screaming that their game is now ruined and they will never buy anything new.
Title: Re: Terrain Hex Pack in progress - 2nd update
Post by: Wotan on 26 November 2013, 03:36:13
That will become a great Hex Pack. I'm locking forward to give it a try.
As said before i totally understand your point of view to make everything in new grafic and have the same style. Maybe i'm playing BT too long so that i'm happy with everything that fits on a hex map. ;)

As for other tips, are those churches and railway stations so usefull in game matters? I meen, if there is a point making some objectives, they better be military bases, hangars, SLDF bunkers, all that's worth fighting for. Yes, starports

Churches and other religious places were always of interest for an attacker. The moral impact on the defenders and civilians is great. And if not as mission objective they add flavor to a village. ;)
Railways are somewhere near important than spaceports. Many planets rely on railways to transport goods. So the control of them is vital. And ... we have never seen any railway station for BT in any map.
That said i like the complex missions and objectives in larger campaigns.
If you do rivers and lakes, maybe you want to think about dam ? I've tried to make something like that with HM Map, but not happy yet. I think that can be a great objective to defend or attack.

Whitar, don't worry about the strategic value of the terrain. I original games Mechwarriors died among rocks and trees.

What if someone wants to use Mechs to support a particularly aggressive football match (or whatever they have in 31st century) and Your task is to secure the passage of aggressive fans' between train station and the stadium? ;)

We deserve such opportunity, don't we? ;)
Title: Re: Terrain Hex Pack in progress - 3rd update
Post by: Whitar on 26 November 2013, 05:59:57
Yeah, and a 38x30 hex field will be enough for that, I guess:) I suggest printing the map on banner fiber, so it can fold for storage, and is durable and water resistant. You can print the counters on visit card cardstock, they'll have longer life, or on matt photo paper. I could make it for you, and ready to ship, but I have to calculate all expences +shipping. PM me if interested in a ready set. Those will be a limited run for sure, so I could prepare like 10 sets and send to US. That's what I thought I'd do. If you want to print everything by yourself, be sure to print in high resolution and without any rescaling, all is perfect to standart hex base. Also check for color, print out a sample first. I will try to make hills for this map, it will be a first addon later, then think about ice or desert mesa. I like to design buildings, so maybe HPG stations, hangars and other usefull bits left for future. Always wanted to design a solaris arena map, as those have all terrain types and are compact. River is a good idea, maybe ponds (lava on desert terrain, can add a heat mod). Think about something that could be used in every game, an enviroment counter. Cause things like dambs and other structures that are bond to mission or campaign will be used once, max twice pro game. Those are good, but can wait, since it must be something everyone finds usefull. I can make specific structures, templates and counters for request, but after main work on the pack. I'll be glad if my map gets to a convention or any gathering. Reference images and drawings are wellcome. Desert or ice? What do you vote for to be next?
Title: Re: Terrain Hex Pack in progress - 3rd update
Post by: Whitar on 26 November 2013, 08:28:17
Some quick update: the big dome inhabitance structure will be left for ice world, as it does not suit green enviroment. Surelly, a living complex like this would take like hundred hexes, lets stick to board game realities and schematics, leave scale aproach aproximate. As heavy weather conditions on many IS worlds make life on the surface complicated or close to impossible, Polar and Desert tundra worlds will have enclosed bunker and dome structures, accommodated to atmosphere inconviniences. We're not mentioning deep perifery, or really low tech worlds for now. Only where technology is enough to keep life and military instalations. I have a good reference in Sega game, where Jade Falcon forces attack several IS planets. Those are not main home worlds, but they are equipped fine.

Desert or ice? What do you vote for to be next?

None of them  ;)

You said you want to go with every game pieces. And i see just few games played on ice or desert worlds. Most games are played with "normal" environment. So I - if i were so talented - would go with expanding the line of markers for the green board.
A farm with some fields ? Something that can be found everywhere and would just give some flavor to any map.
Or some outlying recreation facilities - Hotels, sportfields or something like that. Nothing of great Impact to the game, but to give the map a feeling of a inhabited world.
The entrance into a mine ? And the typical buildings surrounding it. Ok nothing that usual again. But also something of a common Mission objective.
Otherwise go with all buildings you find near Spaceports, factories or storage buildings.

I completely agree with Wotan.

Main battles would be thought over terraformed planets where humans can live without pushing it to the limit.

More rivers, lake, seashores and various terrain types can occur on green planets, too, so a lot of possibilities here.

Good point, thanks  O0
I still want to try it with a canyon terrain (cause it can be mixed with greenery), but will expand this pack. In order: hills, rivers, more buildings
Hope to prepare the map with some small details till the end of this week

I would like to counter the argument here for more green worlds with...I have enough maps already for green worlds. What I am lacking is 'other' stuff.

As an example, in my home Battletech campaign, our Merc Company was hired to retrieve some documents from a cache before others got there. We got to the system, and randomly rolled for weather, etc to sort of 'set the scene' if you will. We got winter & ice. No Biggie, in the campaign it means we arrived at the region in winter, and thus all campaign tracks featured winter snow storms, ice, deep snow etc.

But Hey, winter/snow maps could also be for northern climates, or higher elevations, like the Swiss alps or the Himalayas.

Now, Also consider planets like Gliese 581d, which is thought to be a super earth, orbit within the habitable zone, but also thought by some always have one of it's poles always facing it's parent Star Gliese. This would mean, a planet like Gliese 581d, while Habitable, it would only be the Equatorial region as (for sake of argument) the Northern hemisphere faces the sun and so would be far hostile on the HOT end of the scale, the same could be said for the Southern hemisphere which would be far too cold.

And, finally and argument that not allll BT Battles would be for habitable places, but also those pesky but durn-it-all we NEEDS IT places like mineral rich regions (need all that metal and stuff for building these Hulking Monstrosities and cities and what not.)

Finally, let's take MECH WARRIOR ONLINE's recent map CRIMSON STRAIT: http://mwomercs.com/game/maps/crimson-strait

A cool Terrestial world, but the waters are red in color from the local flora/fauna.

So, put me in the camp wanting to see places other than Green Land, Blue Water.

To clarify that - i opted for more Counters based on green Maps to add scenery there.
I agree there are many green base maps available. But i like the Hexpacks and the Counters there to add something Special to well known maps.

Beside that a winter map and one desert map with appropriate Counters would be my next step, when Counters for the green maps are finished. ;)
And yes, i would have some ideas for possible Counters on such maps.  ;D

Not sure if you've thought about or would want to do this:  A series of interconnecting "castle" walls for mechs and/or infantry.  individual pieces for turns or curvatures with 2-6 hex long pieces for straight runs.  Maybe have some images that could replace one of the sections with corresponding rubble for a destroyed section.  Have ramp sections that could be placed for mechs, tanks, infantry to access.

roads done in the same way.   Not just ferrocrete roads but something like tank trails where many vehicles/mechs have worn a track through the areas where they have been traveling.

I did, my thoughts are while they look great, I must echo other thoughts in that for ease of tile placement, roads/rivers etc, shoudl enter/exit from the centre of a hex side, otherwise, the tile placements are off, and could lead to issues of "Does this road meet that road?"

First lake/river pack is ready, let me know what you think  8) Not too dark?
Next sheets are the big lakes counter, rough terrain/rubble and destroyed mech/vehicle markers. I'll leave the hills for later

This work if beautiful!

I don't want to come off as nit-picky, but I did notice something.  The 4-hex river piece with a bit-o-land in the middle (near the center of the entire image), the water flows off from two adjacent hex sides instead of the middle of one hex side.  I only mention it because no other tile has that, so there would not necessarily be a spot to place that tile where it would line up with the tile next to it.

I don't know if that's too picky.  I am enjoying seeing the new terrain.  Please continue developing this project.

Another tile that is....problematic, maybe.

The three piece tile in the lower right. Has bridge crossing one tile adjacent to a two hex stream/river on the other, yet according to standard TW rules, the only units really that could take advantage of the bridge are the ones that don't really need a bridge (mechs and hover), as all other units can enter the bridge hex but cannot exit it due to being denied access to depth 1 water hexes.

Which makes me think of a water type hex I would like to see: FORDS, nice Depth 0 water hexes that wheeled, tracked and other types of vehicles can enter without being destroyed.

I see what you meen..I planned it to be a sepetate brige hex, but forgot to cut it away  ;)
So briges are not good for mechs anyway?
Also, how would be a hex with destroyed mech or tank marked? Rough? Or leave it empty?

Bridges are great for mechs (provided heavy enough), but if the water is depth 1 at the bridge (as there is no depth marker there) then is simply costs the Mech 1 point of movement anyways.

As to what type of terrain a destroyed mech makes....I remember seeing something in one of the books, I just cannot remember where.

In TW I saw that a hex with a brige is not marked, no depht or brige hardness indication. Maybe I missed this? How should it be marked? And that salvage/destroyed unit marker is under question too. Also, should I write Depth 1 Water, or leave like it is already? I've seen both markings on different maps

Yeah, Page 32, TW, the map sheet does not depict the depth of the water under the bridge. That is from the BATTLEFORCE MAP 2. There are other maps, notable ARCHIPALGO #1, or COAST #2 where there are bridges and they do list the water levels.

Not a biggie, folks can decide amongst themselves the underlying water level, I know some map/map makers list everything in a hex (filling the hex if need be with level, light/heavy wood etc....
Title: Re: Terrain Hex Pack in progress - Download archive added, Lake/River update
Post by: Whitar on 06 December 2013, 04:19:20
yeah, I'll check those maps. Since it is strange that a bridge is not shown as a structure, medium or heavy, it is a strategic element. I have an idea about turrets, LRM and laser. Interesting?

Both sheets updated

Those river tiles are great. Also the bridges are good. But if you already fix there CF, you should do some more bridges as hard or hardened constructions for heavy traffic - and also some light bridges for the people. ;)
What do you think - are there rivers somewhere that flows through woods ?
Title: Re: Terrain Hex Pack in progress - Download archive added
Post by: NeonKnight on 06 December 2013, 11:47:09
Yeah, i've seen some examples of some CRAZY hex tiles.

Could you imagine the following tile:

Bridge crosses from one Level 4 hex to another level 4 hex that is above a depth 2 River Hex. The bridge is RAIL, Medium....WOW! There would be more text than image in that one hex ;)
Title: Re: Terrain Hex Pack in progress - Download archive added
Post by: Whitar on 06 December 2013, 12:28:14
;) Maybe not, we could use shortened markings: L2, MD..
River through woods is possible) But maybe it will fit better in a jungle terrain?)

But NeonKnight had a good Point. Never seen bridges spanning from one hill to another.
Even have wider rivers than the usual one hex with bridges over it.
There is so much to do ...

I know one thing I have always wanted to do (and even tried my hand at....results were So-So.

I would LOVE to see tiles that are....Transparent, or designed to be printed on transparency.

Example:

Smoke Tiles.  Sure they are smoke, but standard smoke tiles are made opaque, so they cover the underlying terrain and need to be removed all the time see "What was this terrain....Oh right, Level 2 Hardened Building."

Another example is the Bridges...Want a 4 hex long bridge to span a gap, place the Bridge tile Down. The Bridge is Opaque but rest of tile is clear, so you can see what is underneath and thus doesn't cover up what is beneath.

A third example: TUNNELS! Why not have a subterranean area. Again, the tile is transparent (hashed outline?) to show a bunker or entrance tunnel, etc.
Title: Re: Terrain Hex Pack in progress - Download archive added
Post by: Whitar on 06 December 2013, 13:04:00
I don't think that transparent tiles could be made.. at least in regular conditions. It needs to be some kind of foil that could hold print, we need access to factory resources in China))
Brige 4 hex long can be done\

Post by: john blackwell on 06 December 2013, 13:10:33
For transparent, what about placing a sheet of syran-wrap between sheets of laminate?  You could ink the dotted lines on the syran-wrap first . . . just an idea.  Or run a sheet of laminate between sheets of laminate.

Going back to the river tiles, am I being too picky to point out that the 3-hex bridge tile in the lower right corner empties the bridge into depth 1 water?  Were those supposed to be separated into a 1-hex bridge over a bend in a river and a 2-hex river with a bend at one end?

This continues to be a great project.  I am looking forward to seeing someone take this terrain and produce a game board with it.

Post by: NeonKnight on 06 December 2013, 13:11:12
Sure, just print on Transparencies like from Staples.

Whatever is white is not printed, so smoke is done is greys etc, the bridge is simply printed at it's darker color, or even printed on regular card stock and then cut and transfered to the transparency.

Thanks!
My friend shared and idea to print the map and tiles on magnetized plastic material, you know, those souvenirs for the fridge - http://neomagnet.en.made-in-china.com/product/DmxQZjnduEzJ/China-Plastic-Rubber-Magnetic-Sheet-Rolls.html I guess this is it
It could turn out very cool, since the tiles would stick to the board and won't move.
Transparent tiles is a good idea, but impossible to achieve easy way. Or lets fund same project for Battletech http://www.gizmag.com/queens-university-oled-board-game/14008/  8)

And that is another story) Maybe I'll make two more counters for wrecks, my friend proposed to do a crashed Leopard. Guys, if you have any resin dropships, please shoot me some hi res pics in top view, I'll make a dropship tile. Ok, to sum up this week, we have rivers, we have new tiles, and most important - new ideas! Those are: Hidden unit markers, minefields, communication station, hangars, long bridge, revised woods and some more bits, maybe movement markers (walked, jumped, prone...) and hils, hils, hils... Maybe I won't start a winter map till summer, this green terrain keeps me warm:) A desert world maybe? MW game is full of desert maps, can add lava pools and craters, make it look hostile. Desert world is a nice contrast to greenery.

That is a chalange. Trying to grasp everything I could have missed, generaly what is most important to game mechanics.. Who often uses the hidden unit rules? Those could be represented as radar blip marks, until uncovered. There is really a lot to do

Post by: john blackwell on 14 March 2014, 16:56:30
What about colors?

For targets: a bulls-eye that's . . .
black: immobile/shutdown (-4)
blue: 0-2 (+0)
green: 3-4 (+1)
yellow: 5-6 (+2)
orange: 7-9 (+3)
red: 10+ (+4)

colored bulls-eyes with colored clouds for targets that jumped

for shooters, a solid disc:
blue: stationary (+0)
green: walk (+1)
yellow: run (+2)
red: jump (+3)

You'd need two markers per mech but could easily know what targets did from both perspectives.  Once you design the markers, it's simply a matter of printing them in sheets. A few sheets should yield enough markers for a large force.

Just throwing it out.  Be safe over there.

JB

@ Whitar, I look forward to when you are able to put up what you can, when you can, have a safe few months away, with regard to the counters you mentioned ... good ideas I for 1 would love to see those as they sound very useful, .. what size are you thinking off ?, small enough to fit on the 'Mechs hex base - yet still be large enough to read easy ?.

@ John Blackwell, you too have raised some very good points & I agree with these.

As for the artwork, I use Photoshop, various combinations of textures, and experiment with forms and graphics.. I actually make a collage, try to achieve realistic, though stylized look. That's all I could explain, thanks fro your interest!

I am trying to print a map I found on the web (discussed here (http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php/topic,37380.0/topicseen.html)) and I think the RIVER tokens you made would be sweet to 'continue' the river on a subsequent map!

Hello!

I have recently started playing BattleTech for the first time ever. Was looking around for some terrain and I came across your excellent tiles. Just figured I would pop in to say, thank you for all the awesome work, and I hope you keep making more! I included some pictures of the tiles I have finished. I had some foam board handy, so I just printed them out on my crappy printer and then backed them on the foam board for some added structure.

(http://i.imgur.com/Ocej9Vil.jpg?1) (http://i.imgur.com/jovkxuBl.jpg?1)

The images were taken from my phone, so not the greatest quality, but yeah, you are doing awesome work! It's already improved my meager table.

Huh, I thought that the they were smaller on purpose, and I guess I would urge you to keep them that way. When they are slightly smaller they can fit together in a series easier I think. If you made them "just right" I feel like they would be harder to print, and would bump into each other easier, making it harder to put in series, something especially needed for the rivers and lakes tiles. (Which I will be trying next, for sure!)

First of all, your work is fantastic.  I can't wait to print these off and try em out.

Sounds like you won't be able to do much work on this project till the fall, but you can always brain-storm. I've always preferred objective based scenarios instead of straight team death match. With that in mind, I'd love to see some map scale drop ships as well as specific use building like the ideas posted above. Maybe a factory, fortress, power generator, defense turrets, etc.
An additional idea for natural terrain: a multi-hex canyon would be an interesting feature and could fit into any terrain, specially dessert/badlands. A couple hexes wide and a few hexes long would probably be good enough. Deep enough to cause some damage should someone fall into it but maybe also has a slope on one or both ends so survivors can climb their way back out.
Another idea: Nothing says choke point like a bridge token that's 1 hex wide and several hexes long.

Post pics of your table when finished ;)
I note each tip, and make sketches along, so a multi hex bridge, defence turrets, military structures and a new power generator, everything is laid down as a pencil drawing already;)
Cannyon is a great hint, will work on it during my next set - desert/mars-like map. I have some thoughts for a dropship, too.
Thank you for support! I welcome all ideas!

@Whitar: could you tell us some of your magic? How do you do this stuff? Do you first create 3D meshes or what?
Title: Re: Terrain Hex Pack in progress - Download archive added
Post by: Whitar on 31 May 2014, 16:31:16
Hey) No magic really;-)
I use Photoshop and various textures. Sometimes I put my ideas on paper, and replicate in software.
I work with Bryce a bit, it helps me to make terrain maps, but further work I do in PS.
I wish I could do 3d, but it's too time consuming, I learn it in short spans
Nothing fancy, just techniques I developed with practice during this project.
Thanks for interest!

I had another idea while folding laundry today (don't judge). You could probably easily take your water tiles and recolor them to make them pools and rivers of lava. How bad ass would that be? If you made the surrounding terrain look charred and scorched, I'm sure the tiles would fit in with any type of terrain be it grass, ice/snow, or badlands.

I'm anxious about how this project develops further, I got so many great ideas from you, guys!
Thank you for support!

I have drawn a lot of urban, military/industrial structures, turrets with various weapons, a long heavy bridge, and sketching a starport of some kind, to fit a dropship, all for the current green map. When everything, that I planned, will be done, I'll be very proud

Next, I will work on desert terrain, that is hostile enough, with terraforming domes, lava pools and sand worms;)
Just another homeworld in the dominion.

The direct opposite will be an ice world map, with polar bases, underground bunkers, covered cites, frozen lakes, and other interesting stuff.

Keep an eye on this page from time to time, I may post some sketches;)

I could share work in progress pics only when I come home, sorry.. I experiment with forms and textures, until their combination represents my idea, sometimes, random tweaks in Photoshop turn into a new creation. I tried different techniques, and stopped with the least time consuming.

Next, I will work on desert terrain, that is hostile enough, with terraforming domes, lava pools and sand worms;)
Just another homeworld in the dominion.

Everyone here seen the "Tremor" movies? I'm envisioning a scenario where large mech-eating sand worms are hidden across the desert by a 3rd party or GM and when a unit moves onto the preselected hex, he becomes a tasty snack. Or, if no 3 party is available, each player secretly selects and write downs a number of hexes containing the worms and reveals the hex once a player moves onto the hex.

Whitar, I hope you're not getting over whelmed by the volume of ideas pouring in. I can only imagine how much work goes into making these awesome game pieces.

I scanned through the rest of the thread to try and find an answer. I tried to print one of your mapsheets on my home printer, but it printed it as 1 page and the hexes are way too small. Is 1 mapsheet suppose to be printed on 2 pages? Anyone have any suggestions on how to print these on my home printer?

Hello! Point, please, which sheet you were trying to print, cause some of them I posted only to show progress, and those were not scaled right. If you're printing the ones I put for download, make them full size, they are a standard A4 printer sheet.
Hope this helps, cheers!
Title: Re: Terrain Hex Pack in progress - Download archive added
Post by: Baron RedSkull on 05 June 2014, 19:36:17
I downloaded the map pack and printed one of the map sheets as is without changing any settings onto a standard sheet of paper with a regular desktop printer. The map sheet didn't quite fill up he whole page and the hexes were about half the size they were suppose to be. I'd like to just print the maps off at home and glue them to thin foam board for stability. I haven't tried printing the token pieces yet but those look like they are already the right size.

Post by: Baron RedSkull on 06 June 2014, 15:11:20
Ok Whitar, I have some numbers for you and I hope they help. I printed out one of the building token sheets and those hexes are the correct size, 30mm flat to flat. When I printed a map sheet it measures 17 hexes on the long edge. At 30 mm or 1.375 inches flat to flat, 17 hexes should fit on a paper 23.375 inches long. By those metrics, the map sheet would have to be printed on paper far larger in both length and width than a standard 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of printer paper. Unless someone from the community has an idea as to how I can enlarge, cut up the image, and print it on multiple sheets of paper as I am not very computer savy when it gomes to graphic editing, but I think the goal you were shooting for was to make each of the 4 sheets printable on one sheet of paper.

Post by: Whitar on 06 June 2014, 17:46:34
I understand the problem now..The big green maps should be printed on A2 sheets at least, that's no job for home printer, unless you want to divide the map into pieces. Better take the jpg files to nearest printing depot, for better quality and size

I should've marked the sheets with printing instructions, but forgot..I'll update later

What measurements are you guys using when printing your own hex-maps? I need to be very precise because after 20 hexes even half a millimeter gets the map off.

I'm trying to design some very simple hex fields and I'm using 33 mm width right now because after using 32 mm and cutting it out there was still some very small unfilled space when compared to an original Battletech map.

What is the VERY EXACT size of a hex on a battletech map? I guess the value given will be from the middle of the black lining around the hex .... I'm using scribus for this because I only had an Indesign licence for Mac.

Hey guys!

Found some time to experiment with some terrain graphics) This time in 1:1200 scale, as should be on those BT hexes. I came up with this mud road through heavy woods, and enjoyed the result, finding a new way of laying down textures and vegetation. I think I got closer to the look of the map I imagined, and stay with this technique. The road is 5 mm wide, to represent 6m two car passage way, and everything's scaled accordingly
What do you think?

Mech scale hexes would be about 10 cm in diameter, no problem really, and bigger hexes should have more crisp textures

Maybe i'm wrong but the trees are looking very small. One hex is counted as 30 meters from side to opposite side. They look great ... but just a bit small.
Title: Re: Terrain Hex Pack in progress
Post by: Whitar on 11 April 2015, 09:10:20
Yep, can be, at least the road is right - 5mm, so 6m real life, think the tree crowns would be a bit bigger, but not wider then 6 m in diameter. That's not a problem, I'm just sketching out ideas)

I want to refuse from the hex markings, do those 1502, 1503 etc. really being used in the game? I can mark forests with a tree symbol - 1for a light forest, 2 - heavy, 3 - extra heavy, if that's needed

Updated the pic

Black would blend in too much.  You want to be able to see what the terrain is without having to walk around the table for a closer look.

Yes, we use them regularly, when we have not the time to end a Scenario for our ongoing campaign. It's very useful to note the Position of each unit to continue on another day.

Quote

I would stay with the Version before. It's well known to all BT Players and look more familiar.

The numbers on the fields are seldomely used, but sometimes:

If you play with artillery (the player using it secretly writes down which fields are targeted and then 2 turns after that (or was it 1 turn?) the artillery comes down (normally not hitting exactly there but you need the field to roll out where the hit really lands).

And for hidden units in campaigns that enter the board just after the enemy found them / they shot him in the back from hiding.

Yeah, why not)

So, after quite a while, I began to prepare the first map, titled "Convoy breakthrough"
The road is dividing the map roughly in half, the terrain tokens will be placed separately as tiles, so each battle can be a bit different.
For now, it's a standard size map sheet, but I think about expanding it into 2-4 pieces

Here's the full first sheet preview. Perhaps I'll change the road layout later

What do you guys think?

Why do you have fix roads on the map ? I thought that would be better done with variable hex. So just having one map without any specific Terrain and everything else with separate hex tiles.
That said i like the look of the map. O0
Title: Re: Terrain Hex Pack in progress
Post by: Whitar on 28 July 2015, 02:12:10
Thanks;)

Well, I'm designing the features at the moment, and thought that I should leave some permanent terrain pieces, to drag interest to the map. This I called the "mission" map, as it depics sertain tactic objectives, and you're not completely dependable on tiles.

If this works,  the map will consist of 4 sheets, with this long road crossing them diagonaly, so the convoy can be ambushed from different sides, and have enough room for movement.

What are the chances for the vehicle convoy to reach the other side of the mission corner, having some mech escort and forest coverage? Is one standart map sheet enough for this? Or there should be 2 at least?

Imagine the convoy moving from the right bottom corner

Title: Re: Terrain Hex Pack in progress

I think it would be helpful if that map would fit to the format of existing maps. Means the same size of hexes, the same number of hexes on the edges and roads conecting in the middle of each map.

The map looks a lot cleaner without all those hexborders everywhere, but I am SO used to hex-borders that I don't know if this feels right for me. Logically, it is the better solution. But hexes ... they carry Battletech emotions ;)

VERY nice map and layout!

Sure, that is not a "classic" grid, but i thought it needed some input  ::)

I hope that I'll present a printed ready map soon, with optional tiles cut from plexiglass - additional forests, small buildings, lakes.

What do you guys think of the road layout? Not too much forest?

I have never used cardstock, we have a fairly nice canon printer, should that handle cardstock?

Although I love the map packs so if these are printed on that material I would gladly throw money at that.

Cardstock is pretty much just thicker paper and can be bought in reams in standard letter size from any store that sells office supplies. I have a basic HP as my home printer and it handles cardstock just fine. If I could find a way to put these on game board I would. Maybe using an MDF backer board would work well.

Hey Whitar,

I finally had the opportunity to use your building hexes in a game. I printed them off on cardstock, then used a self laminating sheet to not only protect the image side, but now I can write on them with dry erase marker to keep track of things like Construction Factor. Here's a pick of the map set up at the start of the game. The objective was to rescue the VIP from the the building at the upper middle part of the board and get him off the bottom edge.

Hey! Looks nice, glad you found a good use for them  :) So how did they prove in a game? Many destroyed? I have the tokens of rubble(smoke, fire) somewhere down these pages, you can print them and use instead of writing. I like the scenario, reminds me of that old SEGA game, first level  O0 I have oil tanks too, for some explosions or capture, some structures can act as ammo storages, etc..

I'll revisit my project soon, I just don't have my PC around to develop the graphics, but have lists of ideas and maps to design.

Thank you all for interest! Any advice or ideas are always welcome!

For this game, the buildings were just used for LoS and cover. In the future, our group might start including battle armor in which case we would start keeping track of CF and destroyed buildings.

While some of them like the unconcious or immobile might be helpful, i don't see any need for most of them.
They look cool. But i don't think they will improve the gameplay. Most of the information is handled easily with dices or are obvious at all (e.g. prone).

Similar to WOTAN's comments, while they can be replaced by dice, some could actually be combined. The Movement modes and (Walked, Ran, Jumped) could be combined with Movement Mods to then have a single marker:

Walked 5-6 Hexes, Jumped 7-9 hexes, etc.

Thanks!

Yeah, some may seem redundant, and fixed the typo:) Will add some more, like permanent damages

Maybe add "hull down" and "dug in" markers?

A mech can only take two sensor hits.

the first Sensor hit imposes a +2 penalty, the second hit elimiates all weapons fire.

Quote
Sensors (Head)
When a ’Mech takes a critical hit to its sensors, add a +2 modifier
to the to-hit number every time the ’Mech fires its weapons.
A second sensor hit makes it impossible for the ’Mech to fire its
weapons. Critical hits to sensors do not affect physical attacks or
other electronic equipment mounted by the unit (such as ECM
suites, C3 computers and so on).

Good point, improved that:) Some damage markers for physical attacks left, and get my hands to vehicles

Hi, noticed you had an update recently, just wanted to check to see if you still have these for DL/self print or is that blocked since these have been released officialy? I know the rivers one is pretty much impossible to find. i've been looking for some good counters for different buildings and such.

Also i like the move/status counters as well.

well thanks in advanced, just let me know if you have anything public available that i could use for my personal games such as counters, terrain, and even maps

Are any of your maps available for download / purchase yet?  They look amazing and I want to play on them?

Also...

Any thought into making a 2x2 (4x) set of maps?

Hey!

I still need to design a city map, here's the preview of what's already in the package  ;). All advice for map features are welcome. These are single maps, I did not plan 2x2 variants, since that would take double time foe me now, but I'll think about that in future.

I use Whitars stuff for months now. I go to a professional copy story that prints offset on thick carton. And I can really recommend it, because Whitar provided top notch resolution. I cut out those hex-markers and put sellotape on their back to write damage values on it with a non-permanent pen.

@Whitar: could you tell me where to download the highres files?

Edit: is there any chance Whitar that you could give us hills-tiles so that we could create our own hills and mountains for cover?

Hi All,

Since the Lakes and Rivers HexPack is not being produced anymore, is it possible to get a copy of the hexes, maps, and scenarios for this hexpack on DriveThruRpg or some other way? I have the other hexpacks.

How do you get them printed on card stock?
Title: Re: Terrain Hex Pack in progress
Post by: Weirdo on 03 December 2020, 09:28:05
Most printers can handle the basic cardstock you can buy in any store with a decent supply of printer paper. If yours cannot, simply print it out on regular paper, then glue that sheet to a sheet of cardstock before cutting the pieces out.

I got a bunch of my one-hex Battleforce tokens printed and laser cut at the game prototyping store The Game Crafter. Normal token stock with a linen finish. Maybe they’ll do custom multi hex prints for a fee.

Ask an Admin? Xtol or Roosterboy might be best. By asking either one, answer might be given.
