Army Painter Speedpaints?

Since I have a bunch of new mechs, courtesy of the Kickstarter, I've been considering painting them but have been stalling on that. I did consider getting into Contrast paints but I try to avoid GW products when I can. Not because I have anything against them per se, but they do tend to mark up stuff.

And then I started seeing notices about Army Painter's Speedpaint line, and that they're about half the cost of Contrast. With the recent hype over them, I'm curious if anyone's done mechs with them yet? I know the line is similar to the Contrast paints from GW, but the reviews have noted that they're not exactly the same either. They seem to puddle less, which to my mind would make them easier to use on the many flat panels you get on a mech, but that's just an assumption. I'd like to see examples if they're out their yet.

Agreed.  The only places I've seen them are in YouTube reviews (Tabletop Minions, Dana Howl, Goobertown Hobbies, etc.).  They look interesting though!

This is from AU so take it with a large grain of salt, but I've only just seen pre-order emails come out at the moment with an ETA of some time in March.

I suppose 'it's not out yet' is a big reason I havent seen more reviews/tutorials using them yet 

Didnt quite realize the ones I've seen were all pre-release review stuff.

They are out, actually received my ones on friday. First tests went with Purple an dRed (can add some pictures tomorrow).
Behavior is not that different compared to Citadel Contrast, but some things i realized:

- cheaper pricing
- dropper bottle (big big plus)
- paints behave similar to citadel versions, as the red, blue and green are really nice and vibrant, the rest is a bit "special"..yellow is more orange, purple to "muddy/gritty)
- Overall the flow is better, less pooling and smoother transition

Hopefully i dont forgbet to take pictures tomorrow to show you, as i am not home today.

He used them already on some models

I for my instance can say: after priming an being used as basecoat, doing a great job (equal to Citadel Contrast, maybe slightly better but mostly: way cheaper)

I'm hearing some complaints that they're too easily re-activated when you try to paint over them.  Let us know what you think!

Till now i had no problems, but mine dried for three days now...so not sure how long others waited before paiting over and with which colors, medium used, yes or no. Maybe i can try it at the weekend.

Yeah just watched the video,as i said, i will try that later (latest at the weekend) with the ones i prepared. One i worked with smoothly, the other one i inteded a lot of pooling. Will let you know, maybe this time with pictures (not sure though if allowed, as the minis are my own 3D printed testobjects and not official CGL/IWM ones)

Speedpaints do eventually cure, but it takes time to do so (sometimes days depending on the climate).

It seems so, tried it the same way as Juan, still had some "reactivation", but very lightly and on another, older miniature nearly nothing...

So two conclusions:

- no army painting becuase of curing times of three days and more (deopending on temperature and rooms conditions)
- using a varnish after applying speed paints (and letting them dry for some hours)

Let´s say considering the overall pros (Dropper bottle, better flow behavior on even surfaces, pricing) i can live with that, but it also means, i will use them still in combination with Contrasts or in swapping them from time to time with contrasts.

Dana Howl solved the reactivation problem by using speed paint medium to mix with her highlights. Also worked  adding another acrylic to her speed paint base.

Speedpaint are a bit different.  They really are meant to be single coats.

I haven't seen anyone airbrush them. Contrast work well with an airbrush though you lose the flowing nature because the paint is evenly distributed. My guess is speedpaint will be similar.

I plan on getting some and trying that. I have a boatload of older minis and Cavs that single coats would be excellent for. Top many Contrast paints really need a highlight or coffee stain pretty easily. I predict a place for both Contrast and Speedpaint.
