Feldherr and other storage foam boxes?
« on: 27 October 2022, 06:25:02 »
hello all!

Asking the community fo its wisdom.

I have a lot of Feldherr foam trays that I use to store my 28-32mm miniatures. Also my 15mm tanks and the like. they work great IMO.

But not my mechs. Because my mechs are larger than that and they do not fit in the regular feldherr 28mm trays.

So, what storage devices (other than miniature cabinets) are you using for mechs? Is there a feldherr tray (or equivalent) that can hold them? Do you use other methods? For me, they would need to be boxes or box-able as they will be in my attic and need to be transportable.

Thank you!

The "Feldherr Storage Box Compatible with Large Based Miniatures" has 54 slots with wider bases that fit BattleTech minis just fine, and then another 30 slots that fit smaller, extra-long, and extra-wide pieces.  They hold an entire battalion nicely, with the extra slots for support infantry/vehicles/fighters.

"We have made of New Avalon a towering funeral pyre and wiped the Davion scourge from the universe.  Tikonov, Chesterton and Andurien are ours once more, and the cheers of the Capellan people nearly drown out the gnashing of our foes' teeth as they throw down their weapons in despair.  Now I am made First Lord of the Star League, and all shall bow down to me and pay homa...oooooo! The Feldherr site actually highlights a number of half and full width trays that are suitable for BattleTech.  I bought a couple of the case bundles they sell for BattleTech just 2 weeks ago and they work really well.

A couple sites allow you to pick up a Feldherr box or bags and custom pick your foam trays.  I know I got my 24 unit foam trays from there and they are perfect for BattleTech Heavy and Assault mechs.  Only mech I currently own that doesn't fit easily is the new King Crab, that fella is just too wide.  Everything else fits great! I'll add photos from my box of shame (FWLM Marik Militia and CCAF Victoria Rangers).

The 90mm trays work great for the old school mechs.  For the taller mechs, I rip a sidewall out and lay them sideways.  My Steiner battalion has enough taller mechs that I just glued a thin extra rim of foam along the top edges of one half tray to raise it a bit (still fits nicely in the carry bag).

Haven't tried a Feldherr box yet, but I am happy with my Battlefoam bag with the assorted hex trays. Smaller hexes are up to 2" and fit the older intro box mechs nicely while the larger hex tray up to 3.5" handle the new sculpt plastics well and they have 3 larger hexes I haven't tried out yet. I have the P.A.C.K. 432 so not using the wider trays that hold A LOT more. The trays they have for Battlefoam https://us.battlefoam.com/battletech/

I did find this a few months ago https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09CYLZZ36/?coliid=I137CQ2N1Z6MKR&colid=3JH2H652Q9MVX&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it  Want to try it out at some point but waiting until after the Mercs KS. Need to save up for that before anything, except maybe the AS box when it hits retail (or has it??)

I primarily use the FELDHERR HALF-SIZE CASE 90 FOR BATTLETECH - 26 MECHS from Feldherr. I get mine through Fortess minis. They work great and let you fit two full companies of mechs with a couple of spares or have some cells for dice etc. Or if you have huge mechs like the king crab you could cut the divider out between two of the cells. The standard case in this size comes with two inserts, the first will hold 10 mechs of larger sizes. There is also a thin foam topper sheet to protect the minis from the case or impacts. With the 1- mech tray, Assaults like the Atlas, Banshee, Cyclops etc fit in here, sometimes a little snug but they fit. Bulkier mediums like the Thunderbolt or Orion fit better in this box as well or you can stuff 2 medium or light mechs in one cell comfortably.

The second foam insert holds 16 mechs. This tray has smaller compartments but will still fit most heavies without deforming too much. Thinner taller mechs like the Grasshopper, Catapult, Archer, Rifleman etc fit neatly in here. Warhammers, Marauders and squat wide mechs like the Dragon will fit but will deform the walls of the foam cell they are in.

You can also order separate foam compartments for this case if you want to mix and match your forces to tailor them towards storing assaults / bigger mechs easily or two of the 16 mech trays to store a larger number of smaller mechs in one case. The zippered cases are high quality and I wouldn't want to pack around anything bigger for my games.
