Show off your workspace!

While I'm down here in Tips and Tricks, an invitation to show off your maker station. We haven't had one of those threads in awhile. I just got done spray-painting my new paint rack and thought I'd post some pictures. All of my "shop infrastructure" activity right now was inspired by Adam Savage's YouTube channel episode on making a carrier for his new Star Wars acrylic paints:

So part of this is the portable paint station I'm making over in my other thread.

The other part of it comes from Adam's (and Jamie's of Mythbusters) principle of first order of retrieval. I wanted to be able to see my colors better so I can make better selection decision and, well, coo over pretty rainbows. So with that. Here's my workspace:


My main workspace, a simple rollaway desk I repurposed into an art station. It's well lit with a color magnifying light on the right (I cut out part of the back to accommodate the clamp) and a flexible reading light on the left, which as a color LED bulb installed. Both so I can adjust between daylight cool and warm light to get a better read on my minis. Right now I'm working on making a small box for my portable paint station. Note: it also doubles as my electronics station so I have wire strippers in the pen holder along with other useful tools.

I put non-skid tape on the keyboard tray and keep a few rulers and guides and both my tool and paintbrush roll. Basically roll up and tie the canvas when I don't need it and unroll when I do. I also keep the ceramic tile as a rude paint palette, but most often use a wet palette these days. Right now it's just messy because I was testing paint to see if it was still good.

I'll be installing a paper towel dispenser on the side of the cart soon to save some desk space.




Below are six drawers, paint and hobby equipment on the right (painting tools top; saws, tools, containers, and such in the middle, and flocking, static grass, and such in the bottom) and electronics on the left. I also keep a box of pastels tucked away on the right side along with a spray board.




On the floor here are my air compressor and paint shaker. On the shelves are some toy drones and my paint booth; distilled water bottle, my airbrush, some in-progress gunpla, and mask with new cartridges on the second shelf; and gloves and more airbrush cleaning equipment on the third shelf.




Finally, my electronics parts on the left and my new paint rack on the right. Most everything is Vallejo with some P3 stuff I transferred over to bottles. Happy rainbows.




Anyhow, that's my shop. What are you all doing for your happy maker spaces?

I use a 6 foot folding table, piled high with storage (and more underneath). My actual painting surface is an old sliding keyboard enclosure (with the sliding bits removed) so it's at a comfortable height. I have a daylight LED lamp with a goose neck on the right, with paint storage on the left.

I font know the exact word for it in English. It is a storage space above the bathroom that you access through a trap door.

That would be my gaming storage space.

Workstation is a dirty dish, a pair of shoe boxes for the paints, a mug for the water and another pair of mugs for the brushes and the modelling tools. And a roll of kitchen paper. Not much to see since as you can guess my work space is just the living room table when the kids and wife are not around. I deploy and clean everything each time.

Here's my messy workspace. (I hadn't tidied up and didn't want to go take new pictures from this month. To be honest, it's also a little messy now, just differently messy.)



I do most of my brush painting listening to TV shows, podcasts, and music, so I've combined my gaming PC and my painting area into the left desk. The right desk is for airbrushing. I bought the big ring lamp for my daughter when she was doing school via Zoom; since it's a big semi-diffuse source with adjustable color temperature I've repurposed it as my over-shoulder source. My main painting light is the LED arch from GCMini you see on the desk itself. There's also a big lamp near the ceiling for diffuse illumination, and you can see a desk lamp off to the left; the latter can be spun around to light up my other workbench I'll show later.
In-progress minis are kept in the clear bin in the middle. This is because one of my cats (not the one shown) believes minis are cat toys and will steal them. Note, though, that the cat in the picture has his own box. A box next to your desk is usually pretty good at keeping the cat from setting up shop on the desk itself.
The rack to the left has all my unfinished Battletech minis -- the brown cardboard boxes are shipments from IWM. I'm working through the backlog at the slow pace of about a company every other month; my most recent company (in progress when this pic was taken) can be seen here: https://bg.battletech.com/forums/miniatures/eridani-light-horse-78763/



The airbrush paints and other things that don't fit in a normal dropper bottle sit in the desktop rack; my "normal" dropper-bottle paints stay in the two carrying cases for when I go elsewhere to paint. When open the two carrying cases sit in the desk's keyboard tray as shown; this allows them to be easily accessed from either side, and also slid underneath so as not to get in the way when I'm airbrushing. Brushes are also in a portable box, and everything I need for "travel painting" fits in the blue bag under the desk.
When airbrushing I open the window behind a bit and stick the hood's vent outside. That limits me to early-morning airbrushing at this time of year (Phoenix, AZ is not a place to have your windows open during summer) but does reduce fumes and particulates. I airbrush with only acrylic paints, but the binding agents in acrylic primers can get a little nasty.



This is 90 degrees to the left of the first two pics. The paint rack is overflow from the airbrush racks and portable paint cases. The wall is full of tools because this is where metal mini cleaning and assembly happens. When painting, I hot-glue the minis to pill bottle lids -- thus the hot-glue gun. Miniature Market had just had a sale on foam trays, so there was extra clutter that day (week... OK, month). This workbench has its own chair, but they're both getting worn out and I'll probably replace them both with one good chair, or maybe a chair and a stool.

No dedicated space as of yet do dining room table will have to do. I am working on not only a dedicated painting area but a portable system that will allow me to carry 90% of what you see anywhere and paint. The entire box will have lights and power from a usb bank so that I am not dependent on a plug. The dedicated area at home will be a halo setup when complete.
