Crab pink?
« on: 14 December 2021, 10:35:19 »
Anyone have paint suggestions? I'm looking for a good pink, suitable for depicting a stereotypical cooked crab shell. Whole colors only, please. I won't do mixing.

Before I make suggestions, I want to know what kind of style you're doing here. I don't mean to be cheeky because when I hear you don't want to do mixing, that tells me you just want a solid, single color rather than shadow, mid-tone, highlight. But you may have to make compromises here.

Honestly, you can get a good pink by simply mixing a bit of red with white: colors you likely already have. And because of the white you will have good opacity and coverage. That can save you from having to purchase a new paint.

Reaper also has a color picker on their website that will help you. Do you have any photos that stick out as a reference?

That is an interesting shade to shoot for. Not something I've been in the neighbourhood of myself, so this will be a best guess, not an experienced opinion. I'd aim for something leaning more orange-red than a straight pink, which is where things get challenging. One I've spotted is Vallejo Game Color Heavy Salmon Orange (72.152). Don't know if that hits near where you're thinking, but might be worth a look.

Yeah, after asking the same thing on Reddit and doing some image searching to refresh my memory, a reddish orange does indeed sound more like what I seek.

As for what I'm going for, I want to paint one of my Falcon mechs in nonstandard colors, for an ace pilot. And after letting my ADD-addled brain wander through a few ideas, it settled on crab shell. Going for a cooked crab vs natural colors is solely because I find it funnier.

My current thought is orange with ivory for the pale areas with a sepia wash, with the mini suspended so that any pooling concentrates at the apex of the orange areas.

Can't wait to see it.  Only 2 real life crab patterns i tried to paint were the blue crab, and the Halloween crab.

GOOGLE-FU - HEEEYAH!!!!!!!!!

https://encycolorpedia.com/cd7f84

https://colorswall.com/palette/95488/

On a more serious note, looking there, to get some RGB Codes, you can then cross reference with this link:

https://handwiki.org/wiki/List_of_Citadel_paints

Which an RGB code (example from second link of ef3a42)
https://www.color-hex.com/color/ef3a24

is very close to Citadel's:

Jokaero Orange    Base    #EE3823
https://www.color-hex.com/color/ee3823

the first one could be very similar to Vellejo's OLD ROSE:

Check the paint in the store - I have a pot of Jokaero Orange, and it's ... orange. Orangutan orange. I drybrushed it over orange contrast paint for Filtvelt.
