White Primer Suggestions

Hello All,

I finally went through my first spray can of White primer.  I've been using white primer to help the contrast paint I use on my 4th Davion Guards and Sword of Light formations.

I used Krylon Fusion White because it was available at my local hardware store for about $5.50 a can, which is really reasonable.  A true white isn't necessary, as long as it is a lightish color I think my blues and reds will be a consistent tone. 

What light primers (gray, ivory, what have you) is everyone using and having success with?  I can't argue the price of Krylon Fusion, but if something is way better I'm game to give it a go.  I've got a can of GW Gray Seer spray primer, and it is also pretty light, but runs about 5 times as expensive at my FLGS than the regular Krylon stuff. 

I'm not going to see 5x better result using it, would I?  Feel free to tell me I'm overthinking this stuff, btw.

I'm a fellow Krylon guy. For the prices stores charge for hobby primer, I expect actual magical properties. The few times I tried GW stuff no unicorns or fey showed up and none of the minis gained sentience, so I've got no motivation to try them again.

Take home is that stuff from the hardware store should be fine as long as it is a matte finish. But if you are painting a lot of minis, it might be time to invest in an airbrush for priming.

Wish I'd looked at this thread before buying the can of Unobtainum grey this weekend.  Must be made of the tears of Nottinghamshire children.

Grey Seer related question - are the spray can and the pots the same color?  Bought the can thinking I'd have one more day of fall temps this past weekend and was going to do a mass spray.  Hah.  I can airbrush indoors though.

You're overthinking it.  While I've been using Tamiya primers for a number of years now (good quality and locally available), unless you are having problems with your primer, I wouldn't put a strong endorsement on changing for the sake of change. If you've got a good thing going, there's no need to jump price brackets. Good clean-up and taking time to pay attention to detail - along with practice, practice, practice - will improve your painting more than any primer ever could.
