(Answered) Airborne VTOL reduced to 0 MP
« on: 22 April 2013, 13:35:24 »
This is something TW p. 197 never quite seems to address: just what happens if, for whatever reason, an airborne VTOL's MP are reduced to 0 by damage yet it still has rotor structure remaining? (This is obviously mainly a scenario for VTOLs with ferro-lamellor armor, but could in rare cases also affect slow designs in general.)

What I have:

-- Page 197: A VTOL whose rotor is outright destroyed simply crashes.
-- Also on page 197: A VTOL whose engine is destroyed above a hex in which it could land without crashing can make a Driving Skill Roll at +4 to make a safe landing, after which it can't move for the rest of the game. Failing the roll, or being over unsuitable terrain, results in a crash.
-- Page 199: A WiGE vehicle whose MP are reduced to 0 by damage crashes, although one that merely loses its engine gets to potentially make a DSR (apparently at no modifier) much like a VTOL.

That would to a first approximation seem to point towards a VTOL with 0 MP due to cumulative rotor hits simply crashing as well, but I like to think I've slowly learned not to jump to conclusions too quickly anymore when it comes to BT.  ^-^

Good to know, though it raises one followup question: do I treat this as a full Engine Damage critical hit (e.g., even if the VTOL manages to land any direct-fire energy and pulse weapons it may carry stop working) or can that one still occur separately?

Good question. The intent is to resolve the effect purely with regards what happens to your mobility. The engine itself still provides power. I'll need to get a rephrase in.
The solution is just ignore Paul.

Suggested change:

BEFORE THIS ADD:
"Motive System Damage
If at any time during a turn a VTOL vehicle is airborne when damage reduces its MP to 0, the VTOL falls. Resolve this fall using the rules found under Engine Damage critical hit, see below."

What do you reckon?

I might word it somewhat like this: "If at any time during a turn a VTOL vehicle is airborne when damage reduces its MP to 0, the VTOL falls as though it had suffered an Engine Damage critical hit (see below). The engine itself remains functional, but the VTOL cannot move for the rest of the game." Might want to add something about whether or not it is considered an immobile target as well -- not all combat vehicles whose MP are reduced to 0 necessarily are.

Hmm, that's a good suggestion. I'll take that back to the team, thanks!
I'll post in here when we update the errata.
