(Answered) ATM in Aerospace
« on: 28 January 2011, 09:57:30 »
This is a question from before the fall of the forums.  What is the damage of ATMs in aerospace combat?  There are 3 answers I'm aware of: as per total warfare, as per techmanual, and cluster hits @9.   None of these agree.

WeaponTWTMCluster@9
ATM3444
ATM68810
ATM9141014
ATM12201620

The various published TRs are also inconsistent.

Can you please explain "cluster hits @9" before I answer this question?

Thank you.

The ATM is described as having a built-in Artemis IV, providing a +2 to the cluster hit table as per TW page 144.  The aerospace damages are supposed to be "average damage values" as per TW page 242.  Elsewhere, "average" appears to be consistently interpreted as median, implying that the 9 (=7+2) row determines the number of missiles hitting.  Multiplying by damage/missile gives the numbers stated.

Thank you,

ATM and MML missiles calculate Aerospace damage based on the highest damage missile for that range bracket. The damage changes by range bracket.

Aerospace missile base damage is based on a roll of 7 on the cluster hit table. Artemis IV equipped launchers use a 9 roll result. Remember that Artemis IV missiles firing into an ECM field lose their +2 bonus.

Given this the damage is: Standard (ECM Interference)
              Short       Med     Long
ATM 3       6(6)        4(4)      2(2)
ATM 6       15(12)    10(8)    5(4)
ATM 9       21(15)    14(10)  7(5)
ATM 12     30(24)    20(16)  10(8)

Thanks.

My understanding is that ECM has no effect in aerospace combat (TW page 238), unless you are using the strategic operations rules where they alter the to-hit number rather than damage.  Consequently, the smaller number is only (?) relevant when aerospace units engage ground units shielded by an ECM effect.

Assuming that's all correct, it triggers some errata which I haven't otherwise seen:
Total Warfare, ATM-6 damage
TechManual, ATM-6, ATM-9, and ATM-12 damage.
In 3085 Aesir/Vanir and Isegrim, have the wrong ATM-12 damage.
