As per current errata, the damage from flechette ammunition and fragmentation missiles (and probably a few other special-case sources I'm not thinking of right now as well) is dealt to conventional infantry "as though the attack were from an infantry unit". Would this also mean that mechanized infantry takes correspondingly less damage from such an attack as per TW p. 216?

Yes, they take less damage.
