Aero moving from Low-Alt to Ground map - which map edge?
« on: 12 December 2020, 18:16:14 »
In Total Warfare, 6th printing, p91, the following rules paragraph is present:

Quote
At any time during their movement on a low-altitude map, a player can choose to have their aerospace unit exit a low-altitude map and enter the corresponding ground mapsheet. Before moving to the ground mapsheet, the orientation of the ground mapsheet to the low-altitude map must be determined (if it hasn’t already; see Matching Ground Mapsheets to Low-Altitude Hexes diagram, p. 91). Next, the player must nominate a hex the fighter will first enter along the ground mapsheet edge; the edge of the mapsheet must be parallel to the final facing of the aerospace fighter on the low-altitude map (if there are two edges that are equally appropriate, the player can choose either edge). As soon as the aerospace fighter appears on the ground mapsheet it moves according to the rules governing such movement.

I wanted to be certain I understood the rules for which side of the ground mapsheet the unit starts on. As written, the unit enters the ground mapsheet in a hex of the player's choice, with the same facing as it had on the low-altitude map, on a side of the ground mapsheet parallel to said facing, i.e., the unit's flight path is along the edge of the sheet.

Concrete example: if a unit is facing North on the low-altitude map, and chooses to move to the corresponding ground mapsheet, the hex it initially enters on said ground mapsheet must be either on the East or West edges of said mapsheet, as those are the edges parallel to its current facing (although it will continue to face North, flying along the edge of the mapsheet until it makes a facing change). Is this correct?

As a secondary question, while units facing North or South have clear parallel edges to enter (East/West), the choice of map edge is less clear for units facing any of the other directions (Northeast/Northwest/Southeast/Southwest), since ground mapsheets are rectangular while facing is hex-based, as shown in the Matching Ground Mapsheets To Low-Altitude Hexes diagram on the same page (see below). Should the player simply pick an edge which is closest to parallel (30° angle)?

Actually, after some geometry, that results in the East or West edges always being the available choices of entry edge. If this is the intended behavior, specifying this directly might be less confusing.
