(Answered) Aerodyne DropShip/Small Craft vertical landings
« on: 13 December 2020, 12:12:47 »
Several game rules passages, as currently printed and/or in the errata document, contradict each other on whether Aerodyne DropShips and small craft can make vertical landings, and/or under what conditions they can do so (in atmosphere / in vacuum). Most of these are in Total Warfare, but there is also at least one additional relevant passage in TechManual. Please research/discuss and provide an overall ruling.

Errata documents referenced are TW v6.1 and TM v4.0.

Relevant passages:

Total Warfare, p. 86, Landing Modifiers Table, second subtable, under "Condition": "Aerodyne small craft and DropShips making vertical landing      +2/+0(footnote)"
Footnote reads "Number on left applies to atmospheric vertical landings, number on right applies to vacuum vertical landings (see Vacuum, p. 55, TO). NA means the craft cannot land vertically; use stalling rules (see p. 84)."
(This passage is found in the TW errata document as well as the 6th corrected printing, and implies that they can make vertical landings in atmosphere and in vacuum.)

Total Warfare, p. 87, Landing, third paragraph, first sentence, states that "Conventional Fighters (without VSTOL), aerodyne small craft, and aerodyne DropShips must make horizontal landings."
(This passage is found in the TW errata document as well as the 6th corrected printing, and implies that they cannot make vertical landings at all.)

Total Warfare, p. 88, Liftoff, second paragraph, second sentence, states that "Aerodyne small craft and DropShips may land and takeoff vertically only in a vacuum (see Vacuum, p. 55, TO)".
(This passage is found in the TW errata document as well as the 6th corrected printing, and implies that they can make vertical landings, but only in vacuum, not in atmosphere.)

Total Warfare, p. 312, Landing Modifiers Table, second subtable, under "Condition": "Aerodyne small craft and DropShips making vertical landing      NA/+0(footnote)"
(This passage is found only in the TW errata document, and implies that they can make vertical landings in vacuum, but not in atmosphere. However, this table in the 6th corrected printing matches the corresponding table on p. 86 in the 6th corrected printing described above, including the errata for that table.)

TechManual, p. 190, "Special Enhancements": states that "Aerospace fighters and aerodyne Small Craft, by virtue of their design, already incorporate VSTOL capabilities, but may mount this [VSTOL] equipment to eliminate the +2 penalty for attempting a vertical landing in atmosphere."
(This passage is found in the TM errata document as well as the 4th corrected printing, and implies that aerodyne small craft can make vertical landings in atmosphere, without mentioning aerodyne DropShips or vertical landings in vacuum.)

Update: Strategic Operations gets roped into this too - unfortunately, I only found this particular passage well after the initial post was tagged [Research], in an older copy of SO (copyright 2009, so first printing).

Strategic Operations (2009 first printing), p. 72-73, "Vertical landing and liftoff" section describes rules for aerodyne DropShips and Small Craft making vertical landings in atmosphere. It is indicated that under Standard Rules this is only possible in vacuum. Under the advanced rules described in the passage it is possible in atmosphere as well, but extremely dangerous. Note that this is the old version of SO; I do not have access to the recently released version.

In addition, the SO Errata Document (v3.02, 2020-08-06) modifies a passage on Page 72. The modified passage states that "Under standard rules aerodyne DropShips may not conduct vertical landing maneuvers in any type of atmosphere. [...] Under these advanced rules, aerodyne DropShips may conduct a vertical landing" (and then adds additional effects and modifiers). Note that the errata alteration explicitly removed mention of aerodyne Small Craft from the passage, but again, this is the errata document for the outdated version of SO, which has presumably been superseded by the new printing.

These rules seem the most detailed, and also explain why aerodyne DropShip vertical landings in atmosphere using the bottom-mounted transit drive are not recommended (which was not actually described in Total Warfare). That said, it is entirely possible changes were decided upon after this printing, hence some of the sections in other rulebooks indicating that aerodyne DropShips (or at least Small Craft) can make vertical landings in atmosphere.

While not directly answered in a post, this thread can now be marked Answered. Errata to Total Warfare has been issued that resolves all inconsistencies mentioned.

A summary for others reading the thread: Aerodyne Small Craft may safely make vertical landings in atmosphere, and may mount VSTOL Equipment to reduce the difficulty of the Control Roll required to do so. Aerodyne DropShips may only safely make vertical landings in vacuum. Text and tables in TW have been updated to reflect this.

The SO rules for decidedly unsafe vertical landings of aerodyne DS in atmosphere are presumably also still valid, and no longer conflict with anything in TW.
