(Answered) Reversed arms and shoulder critical hits
« on: 04 August 2021, 22:32:40 »
Hi,

AGoAC (p.33) and BattleMech Manual (p.49) both state the following in the Critical Hit Effects section of the Damage chapter.
Quote
A critical hit to this actuator freezes the shoulder joint. The ’Mech may not punch or make physical weapon attacks with that arm, nor may it make clubbing attacks.

It also seems intuitive that a frozen shoulder would preclude a 'mech from reversing an arm, especially since two damaged hips reduce MP to 0. However, there is no explicit mention about an impact to the 'mech reversed arms capability in the Critical Hit Effects or elsewhere I can find. Therefore, am I correct in assuming the shoulder isn't SO frozen that an interaction exists with any game mechanics not explicitly mentioned, e.g. reversed arms?

If the interaction exists, I would immediately have these follow-up questions:
  • When the shoulder joint is destroyed, can you reverse just an undamaged one?
  • If the shoulder joint is destroyed while the arms are reversed, will one or both arms get stuck that way?

To counter those concerns, both books explicitly preclude the complication of reversing one arm but not the other. And, they suggest arm destruction is the only damage severe enough to impact reversing arms. For example, the following is in the Reversing (Flipping) Arms section of the Combat chapter. AGoAC p.15 & BattleMech Manual p.24
Quote
Both arms must be reversed (unless one is destroyed). ... In the End Phase, reversed arms automatically return to the front arc.

Another comparison can be made to how functional arms are required for prone mechs. On AGoAC p.19 & BattleMech Manual p.30, it says:
Quote
A prone 'Mech may fire some of its weapons, as long as neither of its arms has been destroyed. The attacker chooses one arm: no weapons in that arm can fire that turn ...; which arm is chosen may be changed each turn). ... All other weapons may be fired, ..."

Thanks,
-Brian

Sorry about that. Will I need the Total Warfare book to post to this subforum, or will AGoAC and the BattleMech Manual suffice?

I updated the original post with page numbers and some more related data.

AGOAC or the BMM are both fine in this subforum, thanks.

You're right in that it would seem that a shoulder hit should prevent arm flipping.  However, by the rules as they stand, such a hit does not have that effect.  We've taken note of your comment though for future work.  Cheers.
