A few minis of mine
« on: 13 February 2014, 21:52:02 »
Going to drop all my builds in here as I learn to do macro photography and document the minis. I will try and make these all finished minis only but sometimes things are to kool not to share.

All photo help deeply appreciated.

Minis...ehhhh....I am old, color blind and stuck in my ways so they are what they are.... I am not a canon guy and love to mod.

Will just post links to the albums.

Thanks  :) I do but they are not metallics. I am color blind so matching paint jobs from the BT universe or even from one mini I did to the next is a real challenge.

I wanted to have some unit cohesion so I tried several different methods that I could easily replicate from one mini to another as I add mechs to my unit. I was doing a black based mini and dry brushing the metallic colors over them as you can see on some of the minis. After stripping a Mauler that was from my playing days back in the 90s, there was a lot of black left in the crevices, panel lines, etc so i took a small wheel on my dremel to it to see if I could get the remaining paint out. What I got instead was highly detailed mini with the highlights coming from a polishing. I really liked the look.

I now have a process down where after I assemble they minis get degreased, etched and then an ink bath. After 48 hours of dry time I then take a medium fine wheel to them and take off the excess ink on top. I then use a fine grit wheel to polish the highlights and even get my fade effects with it.

Doing this has given a lot of continuity to all minis and I really like it.

I plan on going back and stripping a lot of the ones I painted in the last year that I am not happy with. There are quite a few paint jobs that I do like and that I have picked up from others that will stay painted but most of mine moving forward will be done with the process above.

I see... Well after reading your methods I can see the 'metallic' sheen of the actual metal coming through the ink, and you are right, they do have a continuity that you have spoken of, and that is pretty cool. What's most important (IMHO) is that you make them yours and are happy with them. Canon or not, you painted them to your liking (pretty cool methinks too)... It reminds me of a few guys I met and was quick to make fun of because they had 100's of minis but none painted really. A few told me that they just liked the raw metal look, which I can appreciate, but always thought was more of an excuse. In your case though, it is in fact no excuse, but your 'look'...

Looks good. Although your poor Hornet looks like it's really turning into the wind or it's been dropped. It's bent too far forward.

As you can see by these pics I do have and have painted a lot of minis. Most of the REALLY stunning ones I have are painted by folks here on LOTB that I have acquired in the past year. I see their armies all with matching unit paint jobs and dress right dress and wanted to have the same. The "bare" look just really resonated with me and stuck.  O0

that's a pretty impressive collection. I could flick through these for ages, there's just such a wide selection of stuff here.

I really like some of the very silvery ones on shelves 1&2, very "It Came From Outer Spaaaace!" 30s  B-movie silver robot look. It really suits thing like the mongoose and the Highlander. (also, you've got a sweet little Whittworth there on shelves 1&2 that's labeled as a Clint, I wouldn't normally mention it but I just have an inexplicable love for the much underpreciated little Whittworth)

and your jumping panther (which while i'm sure it's tricky to use on the gaming table) looks GREAT!

edit: also liked the white/grey King crab.

Crowe - thanks. :D Yes some of those minis really shine (no pun intended) when polished like that. Especially the really good sculpts with lots of flowing lines. The King Crab has long been a fave of mine. There are 2 others that are still under construction being modded and I hope to showcase soon.

Steel - Both are stock.
