Since it is a nice way to add my mech collection all into one nicely rolled thread, I will take the example of humans like Diablo48, Sarcazmo, and MisterPants (and others) to have a thread all my own full of mechs you have all helped me tweak out. We can also talk about bikinis in here as it is standard factory attire for all female staff. It's hot in here ladies.

anyway, we'll start with my latest and work back as I find them.

Need some electronic warfare to backup your pyromaniac tendencies? Ladies and gentlemen... we have you covered! Ladies, now please uncover and reread our dress code policy, thank you. Don't worry however, while you were scratching your head about all the lasers and PPC's you missed the REAL weapons. There is a head mounted Flamer and an MML-3 that the Wasp pilot can show you how to fill up with Inferno missiles. Now record some of this for posterity, your kids are going to LOVE watching mommy or daddy work! Now you see it... now you don't. Go-go gadget Void sig.

Sometimes, unsavory people refuse to let you create ash and melt things in peace. That is when you need a bodyguard. Someone who doesn't understand how you do things, but loves watching you work and will defend you with their life. These people sometimes call themselves "Commanders". Humor them. Bring them along, they are handy to keep around, but don't let them stop your self expression. For them we have the Dragon! A fast ride as heavies go. Able to hit hard as a truck and take a licking. They are also good at drawing fire away from you. Tell them to use the inferior standard missiles and only the elite of the unit are allowed anywhere near the Incendiaries and Infernos. Also, don't be afraid to get out of Dodge if things start going sour. Remember, you don't need to out run the Jade Falcon. You just need to outrun the Dragon pilot who is trying to outrun the Jade Falcon. anyway, here it is! A mech fit for a bodyguard.

Here's a Bombardier variant I got lots of help from LCC and others on. I lowered the armor to up the amount of DHS it mounts. If it can't fire its weapons what good is the fire support it offers correct?  It mounts fewer LRMs than the original, but more than twice as many SRMs while a little more direct fire. Plus twice as many missile reloads for more battlefield time. Great for covering the real unit warriors who are busy burning things.

Here's a more realistic bodyguard. The kind you give to your Alpha. A ride for a pilot who is as crazy as your pyromaniacs, but in their own special way... in your face melee! This one is as fast as a Nightsky, but tougher. Pulse lasers might help you hit more accurately, but I wanted to duplicate the damage output of the original, so the SNPPC was the weapon of choice here. Overall a much more desirable variant than any other Hatchetman I've seen.

Here's one I posted a while back. The original frame that the Merlin was based upon, it was produced my Mountain Wolf Battlemechs. An all energy weapon loadout makes up its weapons, while jump jets allow for greater maneuverability. Some of these even  survived the Succession Wars, one was rumored to be a Royal variant. Like the Merlin, was said to be able to engage any kind of target (hardened, infantry, mech) effectively and at any range. Real battlefield experience showed that long range was out of reach however for the most part. It is a cool running mech, and pilots enjoy both how it runs and how it looks. Sleek and stylish, with a very smooth gait other battlemechs just don't have. The factory workers enjoyed washing the Emrys in their bikinis as well.

Nice work overall.  The only two issues I had are the Wasp which needs to decide if it wants to move 10/15/10 or 10/15/0 because the 6 Jump Jets are just dead weight as is, and the Hatchetman which needs to get an XLE to pick the speed up to at least 7/11/7 and needs to strip the snubbie out for something that is better at melee range.  A LPL would work if you want a big gun, or if not you could switch to an assortment of Medium Lasers of whatever type you like.

I'm pretty happy with the performance of the Wasp so far. To give it the extra jumping you could go XL Gyro I think. But I was enjoying trying to keep some aspect of its original movement profile and look. As for the Hatchetman, I agree wholeheartedly. I originally placed a LPL on it, but only went with the SNPPC as an afterthought for the slight range advantage it has, but more importantly it mimicked the damage of the originals AC/10. Not a fan of the XLE on this one to be honest as I wanted it to stay more affordable than something like the Nightsky while still remaining competitive. Not sure I accomplished this, but it was fun trying. :)

Curious why you consider the 6 JJ's on the Wasp as dead weight. They've worked pretty well so far in MegaMek for me. So want to hear more about your side of it.

On a related note, here's a mech that burns even more stuff! Probably comissioned for the elite of the Cricinus Federation or something, lol. Based loosely on a mix between the Firebee and Firestarter. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the War Crime! Infantry piddle their kevlar just thinking about having to face one of these. Solaris VII has banned them.

Honestly, slow lights are just dead meat on the modern battlefield so you must use a LFE or XLE for extra speed and payload.  This gets even worse if you are using a melee weapon because you need to be able to get it in range fast and be able to stay engaged no matter what the enemy does.  I also strongly dislike the snubbie here because that is a weapon that wants to operate at 9 hexes whenever possible so it automatically conflicts with melee weapons in the same way you would never use LRMs on a melee 'Mech.  The LPL on the other hand thrives in close where it gets a lovely -2 to hit so this is one of the few valid uses of that weapon.

Quote
Curious why you consider the 6 JJ's on the Wasp as dead weight. They've worked pretty well so far in MegaMek for me. So want to hear more about your side of it.

The biggest issue is the fact that with only 6 jump, using them puts your mobility for the turn into the medium category and fails to get a high enough TMM to really keep you safe.  This protection is critical on any light 'Mech because you simply cannot carry enough armor to stand up to much fire so you have no choice but to do your best to avoid it.  The second and far less pressing issue is that it will generally be better to run to any location than jump because you have nearly triple the ground movement so you can usually afford to make any jumping trip on the ground and set yourself up for a better shot with only a +2 from running.

Concerning the Wasp... some people actually have personal preferences that override optimal design picks.  Honestly, that 6 jump is good for emergencies and it keeps that original Wasp flavor.

It's one of the coolest Wasps I've seen yet.

@Diablo48: ok. You convinced me on the LPL. I am a Pulse Laser junky, so thanks. Any excuse to use one or several is nice. Probably remove that ERML to make up the weight. I know that lights need to be fast, but it's really meant to be more of an ambush then run kind of machine. Or a cheap alternative to the Nightsky. So I'm just leary of making it more fragile. Even the weight I could gain from an XL Gyro was too much of a risk. Just this time though. lol

THANKS! :)

I love the Wasp, but it really is a bad design. I used to run a modded one for 3025 that removed a ton of armor and had an LRM-5 to stay at range, but coming up with decent 20 tonners for the more modern stuff is pretty tough. Especially if you want them to jump (if you go all ground speed it becomes easier hough) but I wanted it to still feel like a Wasp. Also the 6 JJ were great when I had to run up close to get good numbers on a larger machine, then jump over a hill or barrier to cut line of sight and set myself up for the run again. I am really proud of this design. If I were to get into a RPG group I would seriously consider requesting one or upgrading my current Wasp to match. Working on a story right now for it ;)

looking back real quick, what about switching out all weapons for quad Medium Pulse Lasers? that is a nice firepower upgrade! Accurate as well. <--- talking about the Hatchetman here. I know it seems kinda boring too, but it would work really well here. 2 CT, 1 RT/LT. Same number of crits used. Don't need TSM though. It costs too much, lol.

Here's some cheap and effective artillery support in mech shaped um... form. I have been running a variant of this for some time. But have tweaked it to the point I am very happy with. In double blind they are especially fun if you have spotter. What's really fun is pounding a field with artillery barrages and then all of my Knuckle Dusters jumping from behind cover to go in for the kill with medium lasers and kicks. If you could see it folks... well... sniff.. it brings a tear to my eye.

The Knuckle Duster is a light mech with one Medium Laser and one Thumper Artillery with a ton of ammunition. They have jump jets for maneuverability and for shaking infantry. They have full armor coverage, but on a fragile Composite frame. This is because they are fire support and may need to shrug off a little light weapons fire, but anything heavier should be avoided. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have been :)

That would work if you are willing to give up the extra bit of striking range on the LPL.  I just did not suggest it because it breaks the big gun theme you had going.

You can make a 20-toner work with jets, you just cannot keep much in the way of firepower and armor if you do.  I made a decent example here, although I would be inclined to swap the missiles for a Medium Laser battery for more firepower if that did not turn it into a Stinger upgrade.

Nice Wasp Diablo48!

As far as the Hatchetman, if I optimize, I will probably go with the quad MPL. It's the kind of platform they were made for. But for more flavor, I like the SNPPC. It is close enough to the original, yet more along the lines of something I wouldn't mind piloting. Something that feels like I could find a canon variant if I really dug hard enough, lol.

For the Wasp, the hardest part is getting it to be somehow effective at all ranges and still give it a reason to even exist! Because I just couldn't imagine investing in them unless they were the only thing on the market or all I could afford, or it had some niche that complimented other assets. I went for a mix of the last 2. Fire and cheap. Now I need some cool name for my 4th Kavalleri Lance to use. Like a Torch Lance or an Igniter Lance or something like that. Since it's operating as a Demi-Company it could be like Pyro Company. I dunno. Gotta work on it, lol.

yeah, but concessions need to be made on these little guys. Mine had small cockpits as well on several. The mental image is amusing though, lol.

Anyone like my Knuckle Duster? May not look like much but a unit of these things is devastating. I imagine a little frightening as well. The originals had Flamers or Small Pulse Lasers. But the Medium Lasers really are better on the design. I figured the anti infantry would make the difference. It turns out that the extra range is what makes more of a difference actually.

Any ideas on the other designs? I still need to get more put up. Not enough time!!! lol

The Knuckle Duster is a nice design, although a Small X-Pulse Laser, ER Flamer, or Light Machine Gun might be a good compromise to get you more range without loosing your anti-infantry capabilities.  Another alternative would be to use a Small Cockpit to get a second anti-infantry energy weapon in there because this is not a design that should be making PSRs often.  An XL Gyro might also work here, but that would require some more tinkering to get working properly.

can't even beleive with all this talk about small cockpits I didn't put one on the Knuckle Duster! Quick question: is a small cockpit considered new tech? I think it should have been available as SW tech personally, but I digress.

Here's the plan, but I'm at work for the next 10 hours or so so it may be a while until I can get it posted. I need a Succession Wars era Knuckle Duster (thinking Mountain Wolf Battlemenchs as manufacturer), and then a 3050 Clan Invasion era (upgraded to Arrow IV) and then finally Jihad era complete with all the fun HFF/Composite IS, Small cockpit toys the Jihad brought us. A Knuckle Duster for every pocketbook. All that would really change would be that the SW era one would be a little light on armor, which really wouldn't be that big of a deal. It's better than fire support! :)

With all those however, do you think a variant that mounted a Thumper Cannon would be even worth the trouble?

can't even beleive with all this talk about small cockpits I didn't put one on the Knuckle Duster! Quick question: is a small cockpit considered new tech? I think it should have been available as SW tech personally, but I digress.

It is, but so are Rocket Launchers and using other calibers for Machine Guns (LMG/HMG) so I would be fine allowing them before their official introduction date because they are not a particularly innovative technology.

Quote

Well, the Thumper is not a bad weapon for a light artillery piece, you just have to be prepared to field more of them to get the desired effect.  This is not a bad thing because as an artillery platform swarms of lighter units have an efficiency advantage they would not normally enjoy because they will not be suffering combat losses nearly as fast as frontline units so you get more benefit from the cheaper individual units than you will loose to the cost of combat losses where larger machines would still be intact.  Also, more smaller tubes make it easier to cheaply saturate an area so your effectiveness threshold is lower than it would be for a force using larger tubes.  Of course, you will not be hitting nearly as hard at the threshold as the battery of larger guns, but when you scale things up it works out fine.

Now for the designs.  The first is the Succession Wars era basic configuration which was probably used by the SLDF as a light artillery piece because the SHS are adequate for the job, the Jump Jets allow you plenty of mobility to get your guns where you need them, and while the defenses are somewhat minimal they are more than adequate for an artillery piece that should never see the enemy.  It is not exceptional or particularly fancy, but it is cheap and more than capable of getting the job done so I am happy with this design.

The second is a Royal upgrade which uses Endo-Steel construction and an extra light powerplant to add a Small Pulse Laser to fend off infantry and thicken the armor.  To be perfectly honest the XLE is really not a great buy here, but just endo for a SPL and a half-ton of armor seemed like an underwhelming upgrade because this design simply cannot afford to mount DHS, so I went with the old adage: "If it is not broken, fix it until it is".  Even so it is still a serviceable design and a definite improvement over he original, however cost is the real enemy here and you do not get a 50% improvement in performance to make up for the cost of the XLE.

Third is the 3050 Arrow IV upgrade, but to be perfectly honest I am not convinced this is a good idea.  The swap to Endo-Steel only allowed two tons of ammunition which is woefully insufficient for an artillery platform, and while the design did gain CASE the armor and defensive arsenal remain unchanged which leaves it a little vulnerable with the reduced range of the Arrow IV system.

Next is the Jihad-era upgrade which takes elements from the Royal version and improves it by replacing the SPL with a Flamer, switching to a Small Cockpit, and upgrading to LFF armor to improve protection while keeping costs low.  I could have used an ER Flamer here, but it is not nearly as readily available as the standard and I wanted to save that for the experimental version.

My personal favorite is actually the Succession Wars version because it is cheap and simple but still capable of getting its primary job done just as well as the more sophisticated variants.

LOVE THEM! Almost what I would have made. Some design philosophies I would have gone more with. For instance I would have given the 3050 variant only 1 ton of ammo and changed the close weapon from a Medium Laser to a Streak-SRM-2 just to be consistent with other 3050 toys. Remove any armor you may need to here to make room.

The Royal was really well done. Loved the design and all of its flaws there.

The Succession Wars variant is my favorite as well. It can easily compete with the others and you wouldn't see much difference at all. A nice upgrade here if it was a family heirloom or personal ride would be to go with a small cockpit and FF armor. Add another ton of ammo or a Flamer. Done. Everyone is happy! Another route you could go would be communication equipment just to make it even more useful. But otherwise I love it. Well done!

The Jihad era was spot on. small cockpit. Er ML. Flamer. LFF. Nice! Possibly an XL Gyro to match other Jihad/post Jihad designs. Although I would feel awful if a fun and cool design like this fell into Republic of the Sphere's hands and an XL Gyro seems like just the kind of thing they would want more of around. :(

The Experimental one is identical to the one I have on my SSW as I'm typing this. Made it this morning before work and then got busy and had to go to work. So of course I like that one! Well, believe it or not I actually went with a standard Flamer on mine to keep the cost down as much as possible. Same with the Medium Laser. standard. :)

I have run Arrow IV variants of this meant to be taken seriously, and they have different amounts of success. Generally only 1 ton of ammo isn't even close to enough to get the job done, but using TAG ammo made it really nice for one shotting opponents. Going with Copperhead Thumper ammo was nice as well, but I didn't get the one-shot ability, so what I found was that 2 tons of Thumper ammo (one Cluster, one Copperhead) worked out pretty well OR I could go with a bigger secondary weapon. Sounds counter productive, but it seemed to work out ok actually. even Thumpers kill good if you have a spotter or the ability to saturate a target lots and lots before they get to you. The Knuckle Dusters are cheap enough that I can usually bring in some nice BA or infantry support for them and an SRM carrier or two as close support anyway, so no worries there. I like that basically these little guys can compete with the (admittedly cool) Helipolis but cost so much less. I like that they can be made with pretty basic tech as well.

So thoughts on the Thumper Cannon? Not worth it? Also, thanks for the ideas Diablo48! Great help!  [rockon]

Come to think of it, these would be a great addition to an assault force. Can you imagine a Leopard Dropship full of these plus, with the fighter bays modified to carry SRM Carriers and Infantry? i believe that would be an effective assault lance no matter if you were running SW, Star League, Clan Invasion, Jihad, or Dark Ages. You would need other forces for sure, but this would be able to pound anything from a distance that your enemies would really struggle to stay out of range.

Flip it around to defender and you've got the kind of force that can give the rest of your forces some serious fire support, and is mobile enough to never get pinned down. If somehow the enemy did close with them the combined might of their Medium Lasers, infantry, and SRM's should sucker punch them into a non-threat very quickly. Seems pretty decent to me. Maybe something more for StratOps than TacOps though?

I am very happy to hear that, I had a lot of fun designing them.  Now, for the 3050 variant you could make that swap, but the 10 shots it has is really too low for an artillery unit so 5 reduces it to a bad joke.  I would be more inclined to strip the laser for ammo, but considering the other TRO 3050 "upgrades" I would not be surprised to see them go for the SSRM 2 at the expense of ammo and armor.

Thanks, I like the feel of that one too.  This little guy is wonderfully forgiving of design flaws because it really only exists to drop artillery rounds on people so you can afford to take a vulnerable XLE for a relatively minor benefit to give the design flavor without really hurting its performance.

That is all very true.  I was actually thinking of that kind of refit myself, but it is so minor that I do not think it is worth showing because people will think of it in the field.

The problem is there is no room for an XL Gyro.  I could cut the LFF to get it for a net increase in protection, but that would necessitate moving the centerline Jump Jet and Medium Laser which are as much of a fixture on this design as the artillery piece.

I had a feeling that was going to be the case.  The only structural change from the base was the Flamer, and those are a recurring theme in your designs (for good reason, Flamers are incredibly handy).  For the weapons, I decided to upgrade to the ERML in both Jihad variants because those are really not hard to come across any more and most of the time you end up needing it you will not be able to bring the artillery piece to bear anyways so the extra heat is more than made up for by the expanded engagement envelope to make up for your low speed.  The ER Flamer on the other hand is much less justifiable because it is a rare piece of technology and the heat will likely be much tighter on that one thanks to the flexibility of the arm mount, but I honestly felt like I had to give it something else to differentiate it from the stock variant so I gave in to new toy syndrome.

My advice is to try cutting the secondaries to get yourself 15 to 20 shots for the Arrow IV.  Exactly how you go about that is up to you, but you will not have much weight left for secondary weapons and armor after loading up enough ammo for the big gun.

They would work as part of an assault formation, however I suspect four tubes would be insufficient so I would attach a full company of these to a larger formation like a battalion with a real assault company and a mixed vehicle/infantry company for recon and support duty.

trying to figure out exactly how this new Windows 7 PDF thing works. In my old XP version I could type in key words and find what I needed very fast. But I forget how the standard artillery works. Does a standard Thumper round deal 5 dmg to target hex only? Or 5 to target hex and 2 to surrounding hex? Or is that a Cluster round? BAH! I haven't run a Knuckle Duster since this new computer upgrade and can't remember. It seems I used Cluster Rounds though.

It really is a fun design. Like you said, forgiving. No matter what you do with it you still get those Thumpers and that's all that matters in the long run. But there is something really fun about a 35 tonner that goes 3/5/3 as well. They are like teeny tiny assault mechs. Working on one now that mounts 2 AC/2's. 2 SRM-2's. Medium Laser. All SW tech. It's looking promising... but not as much as the Knuckle Duster... which is just fun to say I might add, lol.

Try hitting ctrl+f, that should bring up a find box.  Of course, I have not actually tried this so I can make no promises, but that is a standard combination so it should work.  As for artillery, I forget the details but I think I heard that it was improved at some point and my SSW is listing the damage as "15A" so I would guess the damage has been improved.  Of course, that does not really change the fact that you need a lot of tubes to really saturate an area to the point that the enemy really has to react which is why I suggested keeping them in company-sized formations.

It is, although I am not a fan of the autocannon design because you will be close enough to the fight that your limitations can seriously bite you in the ass unlike the Knuckle Duster which will be happily parked in some rough terrain several kilometers behind the lines.  Of course, it still might be workable to get the plinking onto the field cheaply but I think it would be a waste of money that could be better invested in a more competent unit.  The Knuckle Duster has the advantage of getting a unique ability into play cheaply, but the AC 2's can be better carried by a fast moving harasser like the Warrior VTOL which has one AC, moves 10/15 (which more than makes up for the reduced armor when combined with the range of the gun), and costs a miniscule 548,250 C-bills.

CNTRL+F worked. THANKS! :)

Also, from rereading all I could about it in errata and my PDF's it does look like Thumper Artillery now does 15 Dmg to the target hex and 5 Dmg to the surrounding hexes. If I go with Cluster munitions, it looks like it does 5 Dmg to the target hex and all surrounding hex. I hope I read that correctly. The biggest difference though is that Cluster munitions Dmg isn't reduced by hiding in buildings and stuff.

The weird part is it looks like both the Thumper Artillery and the Thumper Cannon use the same ammo. But the damage is different? Truly strange.

But now on to my next one, wanted to really let my geek hang out so the name comes from the Elven language that J.R.R. Tolkien wrote. It means Doom Shadow. The mech is along the lines of an Exterminator. It doesn't hit as hard, but is all energy weapon based. It's meant for deep raiding and gorilla warfare where it can hit and fade. Tracking it is nearly impossible. Because of this it has a standard cockpit instead of a small. Although to adapt it to a more effective skirmisher you could reduce the cockpit and posibbly add more armor. At only 2 LPPC's and 2 MPL's it is not a hard hitter. It is a nickle and dimer. Taking opponents apart a little at a time from relative safety. Enjoy! :)

Here's a little different take on it. Removing the MPL's completely and adding a 3rd LPPC and SPL for anti infantry duties. To make room I had to take out another actuator which changes the look a little. This one can hit harder from range, which really is its advantage. But the other takes care of fast opponents who close with it a lot better. So not sure which is better.

and here's Comstar's newest version of the Nexus. A cool looking yet innefective machine that children with slingshots were previously able to take down. Armor is upgraded quite a bit. The range on the weapons is doubled. Small Pulse Lasers were added to take out said children with slingshots. But only WoB children so it's cool. The JJ's were kept identical for continuity with original design. Same goes for the AMS. a C3i computer was added as well to help integrate it easier with other Comstar Level II's.
