Protect Ya Neck -- Wu-Tang Clan.  Holds up amazingly well for an album released in 93.
Can't wait for the mini.

Aww, he's a special little guy!  It reminds me of my pet budgie Shiny Beast.
General BattleTech Discussion / Re: Jihad sourcebook

We lacked access to novels, so we tried something new that was meant to show why some of the things that had to happen could be plausible.

Too often, the degree of information that the players have is borderline perfect, which would make it trivial for them to realize that even with the changes/buffs that WOB got, the conflict should've lasted a fraction of the time it did. That level of fog/confusion in the initial books? That's how the people in-universe experienced things. And with novels, there was no way to convey that, and have it carry enough weight to make it believable that the WOB was able to create such massive problems, get as far as they did, and become as hated as they did.

I'm not sure those goals could've been pursued in any other way, with the limitations that existed. Instead of the complaint being "Boy it was hard to follow initially", it'd be "Boy they really forced those stupid pills down the throats of every Successor Lord and Khan, didn't they?"

to be fair Paul when people complain about "stupid pills" it was mostly things like handing the throne of a star empire to a woman who had actively betrayed it, Garrisioning Tikonov with a warrior house etc. No one, for example was complaining about the FWL swallowing stupid pills for having WoB crewed HPGs on their ships (ok to be fair maybe we would have seen it if the FWL fanbase wasn't so small they could hold meetings in a phone. booth) I seem to recall that at the time the general consensus was "this is going to backfire HORRIABLY, but given what the FWL knows this proably seemed a good idea"

I can see the Scorpion DNA in the Wolf, yeah.  I like the fluff on it, and the description of the technical details.  It seems like the kind of vehicle that would be pretty widespread among most colony worlds.  The Wolf feels like the cannon fodder tank of the Fringe.

The way things are going in the Aerospace comments leaves my eyes swirling; I never got that far studying physics so I'm left behind by the math and derived statistics.  That said, it seems like the engine and fuel sizes are going to demand very large DropShips, like standard transports in the 50Kt range.  Shuttles could still be a thing, perhaps setting the minimum engine tonnage to 100 would be a better choice?  That would lower the minimum size for 3MP/1G thrust down to just over 500 tons, which is a much nicer round number to work with.

Personally I'm against 'strategic thrust' as Battletech has it, and 'thrust is thrust' when it comes to calculating fuel consumption.  Rocket engines don't suddenly increase efficiency by shifting gears.  Though, as far as fuel efficiency goes, what about ion drives?  The ISS has one that puts out about 0.01G of thrust, but it's pretty dinky; how well do they scale up in size for large transports?  Their fuel requirements are microscopic in comparison; perhaps they'd be something to look into.

As far as distance between worlds, well, astronomy has shown that apparently most stars have planets, if not all of them.  Five to fifteen light years between worlds seems appropriate, since not all of those stars are going to have planets in the habitable zones but that's what terraforming is for.  That would put the Fringe at around 3-400LY across, at a very loose glance at the map.

I'll add more to the Mriya Slaviya stuff as I think about it, this is just 3AM musings.  I've got a brigade organization floating in my head, based off the "standard combat force" I listed off as a playable unit.  Twenty two of those "battalions" make up the seven brigades, so one brigade is going to have a fourth BN in it.  I'm glad you guys are enjoying MS, it's wedged itself in my head as an interesting place.
Fan Articles / Re: Mech of the Week: Deimos

Hi. I played MW4 since its start, and remember when the Deimos was added. The creator I don't remember his name but I do know what happened to him. He went to a war and didn't come back. Not sure which one, iraq or afganistan, but it listed him as MIA. I cannot get wayback machine to work to get the page, hope someday that someone will be able to get it.

Just didn't want the detail to be lost.
Also, the torso is reminiscent of a Abrams tank turret.

Thanks for that bit of our collective history!

And about the turret look - I've often considered kitbashing a Deimos, using a MW:DA tank turret, and legs and guns from my CAV kickstarter stock!

Thanks for the insight, 17thRecon, and please feel free to try again!

Yes, CitizenErased, I'm used to the AS conventions for force building, but using them here as a framing device for understanding, not a hard limit. But they do work.

Side note: I build combined-arms battalions with minis. And then paint them in a canon scheme which I can accomplish. It's my thing. And then use typically a few lances/platoons in AS games.

I get an awful lot of enjoyment from spending the time designing the respective companies and lances/platoons, so I'm really happy if others do to! And I get to see other ways of thinking. I probably woudn't deploy the Valkyrie in that heavyweight lance, but the reasoning for the third lance in 17thRecon's proposal is a) something I wouldn't have thought of, and b) really interesting!

Okay, interesting - mind if I explore the reasoning behind them? It does have a very classic old-school FASA feel to

1st lance seems organised around fire support. Lots of LRMs there. But can the Valkyrie really contribute, or even survive, the weight of opposing firepower?

2nd Lance seems pretty classic battle troopers. But would the Atlas slow things down too much?

3rd Lance: what's the reasoning for this combination?

And overall, how do you see the lances cooperating?

1st, admittedly, I made my selection based on their stock 3025 (or original TRO) variants. I also didn’t build it for straight tabletop, more campaign (so not paticularly optimized) and fun just to try and generate discussion.

1st Lance you were pretty spot on re: Fire Support/LRMs. You said you didn’t want a command Lance, so it’s hybrid. Zeus is commander/bodyguard. Longbow and Archer lob LRMs, Valkyrie contributes to LRMs,  but can also spot and/or harass if needed.

2nd Lance was the Atlas being the anchor while the other three ran out, skirmish and funnel the opponent to the Atlas.

3rd: reasoning: 1st the Firestarter is just cool. 2nd, the Vulcan is even cooler. 3rd, combined, they cover anti infantry/vehicles. Then they’d have fire support from the rifleman and skirmish assistance from the Quickdraw.

Lastly, overall, I built it think of lances and units that could “shoot themselves in”. Either the mechs had weapons for all ranges (Zeus, Atlas) or had Lance partners that could cover them as they closed. At least that was the thought behind it. Originally I was trying to have all of the mechs selected have LRMs, but couldn’t quite design one that worked for me.

As the discussion goes on, I may try again. This is the first time I posted something like this. It was fun 🤩

Missed the game because I’m working, but snuck a Quick Look at the score. Holy crap! I’m waiting to see Sport Center when I get off so I can see the story about how Florida forgot to start a goalie in game 4. Sheesh.
BattleMechs / What if: Sentinel IIC

So, when I look at the Sentinel, I thought, what if some enterprising early Clanners, like early in the "Golden Century", before the proliferation of Omnimechs, make an "Improvement" out of it?
