Hellbringer Coyote - Redeeming the insanity

This config is the outcome of the discussion of the Hellbringer (or Loki, to you spheroid types) going on in the Fan Articles section of the forums, as well as the discussion on the Coyote's Den thread as to why the Coyote's are still using the Hellbringer post War of Reaving, when nearly all the other clans have abandoned it.
it seems likely to me that the Coyote's have kept it for the same reason it spread so widely throughout the clans in the first place. it has unbelievable podspace, and since it uses standard structure and standard armor, it is extremely simple to build. a positive factor when you consider the post-Reaving state of the Coyote's. Touman smashed by the conflict and the former connection to the Society. virtually none of its original holdings still in its possession, and having to make do with the shattered remains of other clan's industry to rebuild. simple is good, and they could build Hellbringer's in bulk without having to worry about fancy manufacturing tricks for ferro fibrous armor or zero gravity facilities for endo steel.
so that got me thinking about what the Coyote's might be doing to offset the designs problems. Since the coyote's have access to the technology fielded by the Society, or at least the parts of it not banned outright, looking at 'experimental tech' for a solution seemed justified. several suggestions from the fan articles thread seemed like good ideas to experiment with. which developed into the config below.

First, the Addition of three tons of modular Armor, attached to the front torso's. this brings the protection in those areas up to more survivable levels. it still leaves the arms and legs vulnerable, but enough modular armor to protect all the locations cuts into the podspace enough to reduce the firepower to a minimum. and firepower is the main advantage the Hellbringer has.
second, a Supercharger, mounted in the center torso. Modular Armor reduces the movement of the mech, but the Supercharger allows you to offset that, albeit with some risks involved. You definitely do not want to leave it on constantly, but when you need some tactical mobility, it can provide. plus, when the Modular armor is gone, it can let you run rings around the enemy.
the rest of the config is much more straight forward. an ER Large laser in each arm provides the main long range punch, while a trio of ER medium lasers in the Right Torso provide close in firepower. A pair of ATM 6 racks with three tons of ammunition in the left torso provide a flexible combat option. Two additional Double Heat Sinks (in the legs) leave it cool running. lastly an ECM system mounted in the head provides electronic warfare capability.

I might have executed some of the loadout differently, but I like the concept of applying modular armor to fix the Hellbringer's thin armor without redesigning the base chassis.  Someone should have done this earlier.  The supercharger is also a logical offset to the unfortunate loss of mobility that modular armor imposes.

what would you have done differently? the loadout was basically the kind of weapons mix i prefer. a pair of longer range weapons (i considered ERPPC's, but the heat issues would have been harder to work around. especially with the supercharger. this loadout is arguably oversinked, but it can handle minor engine damage without suffering much extra heat issues.), backed up by a heavy close in punch. of course, i usually run standard and HE ammo for ATM's.. never had much success with the ER ammo. not tried out the iATM yet, but it looks to be a general improvement over the regular kind.

it is also worth noting that i had to design this with regular ATM's, and edited in the "i" for posting. since they are the same stats aside from using streak rules instead of ArtemisIV rules (plus the iATM special ammo options), you can basically pick and choose which you prefer, the ATM or the iATM.

that said, i don't know if the iATM has a different BV...

This loadout:

-- Better extends the Hellbringer's battlefield life by protecting its torso _and_ its legs _and_ its arms with modular armor
-- Gives her better punch _and_ accuracy at range with the ER PPC and large pulse laser
-- Retains the same 12 iATM tubes for close-up punch (HE and/or standard ammo) and/or dirty tricks (mag pulse and/or improved inferno ammo)
-- Retains the same speed via the supercharger
-- Has solid thermal management with a heat neutral (zero heat buildup) walk/ER PPC/large pulse sequence at long-range and a cool (-1 heat buildup) run/ER PPC/12 iATM tube sequence at short-range. 
-- Has more precise heat management with the iATM-3s.  Depending on movement, three to six HE or mag pulse missiles can be carefully added to the ER PPC/large pulse without hitting negative heat modifiers (more than +4 on the heat scale).

This configuration lacks the ER medium lasers and ECM from your configuration.  But I'd argue that the ER medium lasers are somewhat redundant with the iATM HE/standard ammo and that the ECM is not as important to the Hellbringer's longevity on the battlefield as adding modular armor to the legs (and arms).  And you still get improved punch and accuracy at long-range.

My 2 cents.  Hope it helps.

Again, good idea and concept.  Anyone can redesign the Hellbringer's base chassis.  Real men work only with the pod loadout.  ;)

hmmm, I like it. I really like it! Although the only problem I ever had with the Loki was the lack of jump jets. But the eclectic weapons mix actually made for a nice machine.

Your solutions make lots of sense though and I like them. Only other issue I can see is you have no anti-infantry ability, however not sure what sort of forces Clan Coyote is used to facing. So this may not be an issue. I'm a Spheriod, lol.

Only other issue I can see is you have no anti-infantry ability

I think the 12 HE or standard iATM missiles per turn on both designs is a pretty effective anti-infantry capability.  Even more so if you load them up with improved inferno missiles.

aha! Somehow forgot that SRMs were good at that. What are "improved inferno missiles" ?? You have piqued my curiosity!

Same range as the standard iATM missile, same effect as the standard infernos, probably streak capacity and indirect fire (without the streak option).
so 12 IIW sound like a pretty nice "overkill" for infantry :o.

Just upgrade the chassis with ES structure and use some modern weaponry

The point was to avoid changes to the base chassis.  We (or at least I) were trying to uparmor the Hellbringer while retaining a decent weapons loadout with only the cannon pod tonnage to work with.

What UK wrote.  They're described in Wars of Reaving.  And mentioned in the iATM writeup at http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Improved_Advanced_Tactical_Missile.

12 IIW sound like a pretty nice "overkill" for infantry

Yeah, unless you were facing infantry/battlearmor/vehicles in two to four reachable hexes, you'd probably only fire improved infernos from 1-3 of the iATM-3 or iATM-6 launchers on these designs.

hmmm, I like it. I really like it! Although the only problem I ever had with the Loki was the lack of jump jets. But the eclectic weapons mix actually made for a nice machine.

Your solutions make lots of sense though and I like them. Only other issue I can see is you have no anti-infantry ability, however not sure what sort of forces Clan Coyote is used to facing. So this may not be an issue. I'm a Spheriod, lol.

jump jets would have eaten up a lot of tonnage, and had i not been using the modular armor and supercharger, i probably would have gone with jump jets. maybe even Improved JJ's to really push the movement mod protection. though my weapons load in that one would have been different though, due to the high wieght of IJJ's..

i don't know if regular infantry is common or not post-reaving. i'd imagine that it probably isn't, given the smaller sizes of the clans that survived. that said, natasha-K is right, the Inferno ammo fired from the iATM's would work fairly well in swatting the squishies.. and as an upside, the inferno option would do a good job taking on elementals and other battlearmor as well. (aside from the fireproof ones at least.. though with HE ammo and the lasers, i would hope you could reduce those via conventional approaches)

edit:
fired up megameklab and tried out a IJJ config. 8 IJJ's (one per leg, 3 per side torso). Watchdog CIWS for elint abilities (thats an activeprobe/ECM  combo) in the CT.
weapons are one ERPPC in the RA, two ERML's in the LA, and a pair of SRM4's sharing a ton of ammo in the RT..
firepower is a bit anemic, but it can bounce around all day just using it's base heatsinks, and with a 4+ Movement mod, your less likely to hit the mech. got that one saved under the name "Hellbringer Pogo"  >:D

thanks to megamek, i have quickstrike stats for my Hellbringer Coyote. note these don't use the current alpha strike conversion, but since there aren't any damage based special abilities i doubt it would change much.

... I think I might personally replace two ER mediums with a Medium Pulse, allows you to fire the mediums, ATMs, and a large in a melee.

its less favoring short range punch, more that i've never had a lot of luck with ER ammo.

and i wish that MegaMekLab had the iATM's, though its possible that i just need to update. i've not had a chance to try iATM's yet, but the streak feature and the unconventional ammo makes my coyote soul happy. EMP ammo seems like it could sow a lot of confusion, and the inferno ammo would be one way to really mess up clan opponents (which tend to run hot)

since the quickstrike stats megamek spit out was with the standard ATM's, i've gone through an edited out the 'improved' so they'll match up right.

if you have an iATM version, i'd love to see the full stats. :)

pretty sure they are.. IIRC from when i used SSW, the TRO format is just an HTML output. the text version is the same info, just in plain text, not formatted for HTML.
