B-Pods are literally useless against Protomechs for two reasons.  First is that Protomechs cannot do Leg or Swarm Attacks (that would be fun if they could do Leg Attacks but that's a different topic).  Second, "B-Pods have no affect on any other type of unit." - Total Warfare pg 130, last sentence of paragraph 5 of Anti-Battle Armor Pods (B-Pods).

To be fair, with clan mechs having integrated case I understand why it wouldn't be a super high priority for them. Plus, if you get hit that sounds like a skill issue

Just remember that the 3rd SW was wrote before prototype weapons came out.
I would be nice to see more expansion of the 3rd SW.

During the tech devolution of most of the 3SW should those outside national forces- basically mercs, nobles, and security forces- have been putting low primitive/prototype versions of standard weapons on their equipment?

They did: they used Age of War equipment rather than Star League-era equipment. ;)

Vehicles would be critical for pirates:

1. It's a lot easier to carry loot on dedicated cargo vehicles than in 'Mech hands or, worse, by handless 'Mechs.

2. Infantry are useful for looting (getting through doors without wrecking the contents, controlling civilians, providing perimeter security, etc.), and it'd help if they have transport.

3. Combat vehicles are a lot easier to maintain than 'Mechs. Their parts are more widely available and built on more planets than 'Mechs, while parts for pirate 'Mechs tend to come from heavily defended planets. A pirate force will find it easier to stay operational with combat vehicles.
