A New Project - 4 x 6 Sink Hole board
« on: 23 March 2015, 12:01:42 »
I've been playing Alpha Strike lately and seem to have a few people interested so I hope to keep the momentum going.  Nothing keeps people interested like interesting terrain, so I decided to try my hand a building a terrain board.  I've decided I want to do the sink hole maps so have sketched out some designs to bring them to life in 3D terrain on a 4' x 6' table top.

My plan is to use pink foam as the basic building block.

I will be posting about this project on my blog (http://gamingandshooting.blogspot.com/2015/03/new-terrain-project-sink-holes-part-1.html) and will try to keep this thread updated as well.

Wish me luck.

Do the numbers correspond to levels up or down?

Looking forward to watching progress.

I do hexed 3D boards, and - when I retire, or have lots of time - the canyons/sinkhole maps, and the lunar crater maps, await me ;)

The numbers on the map will be sub-levels.

I made a little progress on the project.

Getting clean cuts on such large boards is difficult by yourself so I enlisted my wife's help to cut the boards.  I used straight edges to give a line to cut along and then used my hot knife to make the cuts.

I have the first section cut and it is ready for texture, paint, and flock.

I've made more progress.

I've cut 4 of the 6 board section.  You can see them all together to get an idea of what the finished project will look like.  Each section is 2' x 2'.

I started to texture one of the boards.  It will look much better when I can get some paint on it.

I am happy with how these have turned out so far.  I've got a lot of work still to do, but things are progressing.

I spent many hours working on this project over the weekend and made some pretty good progress.  I've got two boards finished and two more ready for flock.

Here is a closer shot of the board so you can see the detail a little better.

My hot knife is having some issues, so I've got to get that figured out before I can cut the foam for the last two sections.

I'm glad you all like these.  I also am happy with the results.

I had hoped to have the 6 sections finished by the end of this month, but with the broken hot knife, I'm not sure I will be able to hit that goal.  I shouldn't be too far off though.

I flocked the 3rd section last night and should be able to get the 4th finished yet this week.  I might plan a smallish game (say 2 lances per side) and play it on the 4' x 4' space that I'll have.

I've finished 4 sections giving me a 4' x 4' playing area.

These can be turned and moved around to give so variety to the table layout.

Here you can see a few mechs on the board for scale.

I've still got 2 more boards to do, but I'm going to be working on another project for a bit.

I'm hoping to get a game put together where I can use these and I'll post an AAR.
