Eldsprutandedrake!!!! That's correct folks. This one is a fire breathing dragon. An avatar of destruction, the likes of which is only rarely seen on the modern battlefield. Occasionally Clan mechs reach this pinnacle, but even more rarely do Inner Sphere mech like the Thunder Hawk. The Eldsprutandedrake carries almost maximum armor, can vent all but its Flamer heat, and can make mighty leaps of 120 meters each into the air. The ER Flamer is not just for terrorizing enemies, but for crisping infantry and vehicles. The mighty Swedes of the FRR have a new front line machine for bashing Wolf and Horse skulls. Berserker? Nej tacke. Jag kommer att ta ett Eldsprutandedrake. Because I won't close with my enemy until I can kick him when he is down.

CNTRL+F worked. THANKS! :)

Also, from rereading all I could about it in errata and my PDF's it does look like Thumper Artillery now does 15 Dmg to the target hex and 5 Dmg to the surrounding hexes. If I go with Cluster munitions, it looks like it does 5 Dmg to the target hex and all surrounding hex. I hope I read that correctly. The biggest difference though is that Cluster munitions Dmg isn't reduced by hiding in buildings and stuff.

The weird part is it looks like both the Thumper Artillery and the Thumper Cannon use the same ammo. But the damage is different? Truly strange.

That is what I though, and with that damage bonus the Thumper is perfectly viable for saturating an area with fire.  That is odd that the artillery cannons did not get the same bonus, but that may have been an error.

But now on to my next one, wanted to really let my geek hang out so the name comes from the Elven language that J.R.R. Tolkien wrote. It means Doom Shadow. The mech is along the lines of an Exterminator. It doesn't hit as hard, but is all energy weapon based. It's meant for deep raiding and gorilla warfare where it can hit and fade. Tracking it is nearly impossible. Because of this it has a standard cockpit instead of a small. Although to adapt it to a more effective skirmisher you could reduce the cockpit and posibbly add more armor. At only 2 LPPC's and 2 MPL's it is not a hard hitter. It is a nickle and dimer. Taking opponents apart a little at a time from relative safety. Enjoy! :)

I am not impressed.  You might be able to justify the larger frame if you had filled out the armor cap, but as is it can be outperformed by a 55 toner in every way.  To prove my point, I went ahead and threw together a design that packs more armor and more firepower with no loss in performance.

yeah, I was kind of afraid of that. The 55 ton frame is so much better for that 6/9/6 movement profile. Generally I do max out the armor on my 60 ton fast movers, but I have to go XL gyro and the works. Couldn't put one on there though with all the Null Sig and CLPS. Oh well. The name was still cool/geeky. :P

WOW! Yeah looking at it again quick yours is just so much better, cheaper, less BV, lol.

Ok, what about the Eldsprutandedrake? This one I have been running for a while, but the name is new. I have a 100 tonner 3/5/3 zombie built for C3i networks with the same weapons loadout. (Called the Oberherr) Both work great, but here's what I find happening. The Oberherrs and Eldsprutandedrakes do very well and really change a game. The Oberherr, being part of the network generally has better target numbers to work with but it tends to find a good spot to snipe from and sits there. Usually becoming a major targeet itself. I tend to bring in 2 at a time, because one always gets pasted quick for some strange reason. Even though it is a classic PPC zombie. The Eldsprutandedrake is a mover however. It is more fragile with the XL engine, but can hop all over the battlefield if it needs to and usually does. Believe it or not the Eldsprutandedrake vents waste heat just slightly better than the Oberherr, so heat is even less of an issue. So in this case the zombie gets out performed by the smaller faster machine with the same payload, lol. But if things start going south, the Eldsprutandedrake drops quicker and doesn't get back up. I have had battles where my Oberherrs lost both arms and still managed to get up and kick/Flamer things to death which is just funny though.

Yeah, jumping the 60 toner just costs too much mass to be worthwhile when you compare it to a smaller machine.  The larger frame works beautifully if you stay on the ground, but as you see here the jumper gets screwed.

It is not bad, and while I cannot say for sure without seeing the stats for the larger machine it honestly sounds to me like the kind of thing you want to be absorbing fire as much as possible because it will cost the enemy more to kill than it is worth as it buys you time to beat them down.  You need to think of it as a sacrificial tank that will likely die because it is a priority target, but will actually be doing its job and putting you into a better position with its death.  That is not to say that you should not try to keep it alive because finding some nice defensive terrain to park in is always a good idea, but do not let its destruction bother you because that is what it is there for.

ok here's the Oberherr for comparison. It's designated the "II" as the original Oberherr was 4 PPC's. But the 2 HPPC + 2 LPPC combo just works so much better!

That is about what I was expecting, and it looks competent enough except for the fact that those Jump Jets are not going to do you much good on what is essentially a stand-and-deliver 'Mech.  Pulling those gives you some options for upgrades while reducing BV, so I will post what I came up with after shifting some of that tonnage into defensive equipment to see what you think.

As you can see I replaced the BAP with ECM to give you a little extra protection against Artemis IV modules, hostile C3, jamming, and so on.  I also added a Laser Anti-Missile System to give you a little extra protection beyond the thick armor, however it can eventually overwhelm the improved radiator assembly if it is forced into continuous operation and you do not drop a LPPC or disengage the system every now and then.  The upgrade is rounded out with a pair of ER Flamers which give you greatly improved anti-infantry capabilities and a RL-10 pod to fill out the last half-ton with a little extra short ranged kick.  Finally, it is about 100 BV cheaper than its predecessor due to the removal of the Jump Jets so you can afford to invest a little more heavily in your supporting units.

I like the switch from BAP to ECM. Not sure why I went the other way. One of those "Durrr" moments, lol. But I have to keep the Jump Jets. They are just too handy for getting into position and getting away when I need to. Of course I also like the switch from SPL to ER Flamer! YEAH!!!  [rockon]

Now for a companion to the little Knuckle Dusters. This is my Blockbuster. With the boost to standard artillery damage, it becomes infinitely more viable to use standard tubes than the snub-nosed short range variants. The original Blockbuster had a pair of Long Tom Canon. But it had some serious heat issues, and the cost was insane due to light engine and other structural components. The latest incarnation completely replaced the old. Lowers the cost. Ups the damage as it can fire both artillery weapons. It gets a decent battery of backup weapons. I was able to add a 3rd jump jet (it's important to meh!!!)  :D

Overall should make for a nice companion to my Knuckle Dusters. Possibly each lance of 4 could go 3 Knuckle Dusters and one Blockbuster. Or at least one Blockbuster per company. <shrugs> anyway, here goes!  [cheers]

Also, in looking for alternate ammunition (MegaMek doesn't have Incindiary LRM ammo) for my Wasps, I settled on Swarm-I. Not at all upset about the decision either. 2 Battles so far, and talk about a great way to really maximize every last point of damage these little guys can dish out! Used to use Swarm ammo all the time and then kind of got away from it. Now I remember why I had such a long love affair with it. Oh swarm ammo, it's been too long. Let's hook up more often.  [neko]

Posting from work on my Zune. So please bare with me. Another thing wanted to share was that I took Diablo48's suggestion of using Knuckle Dusters in company formations and am very pleased! My only complaint now is a shortage of ammo. Seriously! Will happily go with the following affordable upgrades. 1) small cockpit. 2) extra ton of thumper ammo 3) HFF armor. I really figured that 20 rounds would be enough. Boy was I wrong haha.

That is fine.  The Jump Jets were really my only significant complaint because I would be digging this 'Mech into a good position and parking it for the duration so they would be a waste for me, but if you think they are worthwhile then it is fine with the minor tweaks you proposed.

It is not bad (except for the fact that you seem to have mysteriously run out or ER Flamers) and I might grab one to command an artillery company with 11 Knuckle Dusters, but it simply cannot compete with the cost effectiveness of the lighter design so I would not bother investing in that given the choice.  Snipers might be a good upgrade and you can really afford to sacrifice some armor and backup weapons to do it, so I would probably go ahead and make an up-gunned variant to better excuse the larger and more expensive frame.

I am happy to hear that, and I can easily see you burning through 20 rounds if you are taking full advantage of the Thumper's range.  However, one thing that might be worth considering is keeping supply trucks on hand to quickly reload your company in the field because in the real world an assault on a fortified position or large scale battle can easily consume hundreds of rounds per gun over hours or days of fighting which is far more than a self-propelled artillery piece can contain.  Now, if you have two tons of ammo you can probably shoot one dry and keep firing from the other as your support assets reload the first bin so that would probably be a good idea.

haha, if I had to pick a "favorite weapon" it would easily be an ER Flamer. I just didn't want to bore everyone by having one on each mech I designed... to be honest though, all of my personal designs (almost) has one for my MegaMek variants :)

here's one I was inspired to create the following mech from Claymore's "Invincible" mech AND from looking at the Striker and thinking "I want a lowtech assault that can dish out the damage and never have to reload!"

So the story goes like this. The Free Rasalhague Republic... yada yada yada... to celebrate their newfound independence, decided to commission a home grown battlemech using their knowledge and available resources as of their birth as a nation in 3034. They had a large battlemech manufacturing base, and even some Lyran and Kuritan expertise to help them with the new design. Comstar frowned upon the endeavor at the time, but by this point so many other nations were doing it that they made no overt moves to stop it. The design had to reflect the national pride of the FRR citizens, while still being an effective machine.

The SW variant is...

The Clan Invasion variant goes like this. Remove 5 Heat Sinks and upgrade the remaining 16 to double strength. Remove Flamer. Upgrade PPC's to ERPPC's and Medium Lasers to Medium Pulse Lasers. It only adds around 1 million C-Bills I believe to the cost, so not a big jump in price there. Also well within the Republic's ability to create. Alas, it does not match other Clan Invasion upgrades in that no Streak SRM-2 was installed. I'm sorry.

The only other variants are the 87, which upgrades the myomer bundles to triple strength. Although most pilots will gladly tell you that it already hits pretty hard; and the 84, which is a field refit of the 85. It upgrades the armor to Ferro Fibrous, which maxes it out, and 2 of the Medium Lasers become Medium Pulse Lasers.

The primary planet manufacturing the Jotun was not lost during the Clan invasion, and therefore the Jotun has remained in service with the Kungsarme throughout its history.

Nice work, although you forgot the Ghost Bear upgrade.  It looses the hatchet to the Clan's distaste of melee combat, but it gains improved Jump Jets, a Targeting Computer, and advanced Ferro-Lamellor armor to make up the difference.  The firepower is not stellar with only a pair of ERPPCs and a half-dozen ERMLs, but it is able to leverage what it has to great effect thanks to the thick armor, iJJs, and Targeting computer to let it wade in close and make every shot count.

I keep forgeting about the GB upgrades. Thanks for the reminder! I don't think I'll modify yours at all. It's great the way it is.

Took the SW tech one into a battle last night against a star of light and medium Clanners (I was roleplaying with myself and decided I was raiding theHells Horses, lol). Anyway, it was my only Assault. My force was 2 of my custom Wasps, my Royal Emrys, Beekeeper III, Jotun, and Wrecker. A pretty solid force, but quite a bit less than the BV of the force I was facing. If I remember correctly a Griffin IIC, Jenner IIC, Locust IIC, Urbanmech IIC, Shadowhawk IIC. The bot played strangely (which was totally predicatable however) and I punked it. Would like to see what I could do against a human opponent though.

happy to help, although I must say I am somewhat surprised that you keep forgetting you have basically unlimited access to Clan tech in the modern era.  It allows you to do an incredible amount of damage, and if there are any gadgets like C3 you want to use the existing FRR plants have the ability to produce some downright terrifying mixed tech designs.

If you were well under the bot's BV and rolled it over I am inclined to guess that the fault lies with the poor excuse for tactics exhibited by the bot because I have seen it do things like run its MASC to the point of failure at 40 hexes and get into sniping matches with its regular IS pilots in an open field when I have veteran Clanners dug into good terrain.

You got me thinking Diablo48! So here is a joint FRR/Ghost Bear effort at a C3 Boosted assault command mech for the Kungsarme branch of the Dominion military. No shame for the Rasalhagian Mechwarriors and commanders who pilot them. This brings them all closer together.

I present to you the Storbror, or "Big Brother" protector on the the battlefield. Mess with kid brother and you're going to get curb stomped. Norse style.

Code: [Select]
Storbror

Mass: 100 tons
Tech Base: Mixed
Chassis Config: Biped
Rules Level: Experimental Tech
Era: All Eras (non-canon)
Tech Rating/Era Availability: X/X-X-X
Production Year: 0
Cost: 23,524,000 C-Bills
Battle Value: 2,923

Chassis: Unknown Endo-Steel
Power Plant: Unknown 300 Fusion Engine
Walking Speed: 32.4 km/h
Maximum Speed: 54.0 km/h
Jump Jets: Unknown
    Jump Capacity: 60 meters
Armor: Unknown Standard Armor
Armament:
    3  (CL) ER PPCs
    2  (CL) ER Medium Lasers
    2  C3 Boosted Computer (Master)s
Manufacturer: Unknown
    Primary Factory: Unknown
Communications System: Unknown
Targeting and Tracking System: Unknown

Overview:
Storbror: or "Big Brother". Not in the way we would think of as some sort of
oppressive thing, but more the bigger brother in a fight. The one who will look
out for others. He brings his experience, muscle, and protection to the field
of battle to protect all those in his care.

The Storbror is a command mech like no other. Offering phenominal command
capabilities with its Command Console, a commanding officer can direct the
battle from right at the front lines, while the pilot brings the firepower of a
trio of 3 Clan ERPPC's and 2 Clan ER Medium Lasers to bare down on unwitting
foes. Let the references to Thor and his Thunder fly freely little brother, the
Storbror is on the field of battle!

To assist in this matter, a pair of linked C3 Boosted Master Computers are used
for targeting tylemetry and to coordinate up to 11 other units, or a company of
mechs. It is considered to be experimental tech, but has proven solid enough to
be put into mass production. Enemys have a difficult time jamming C3 Boosted
networks, hence their growing popularity.

The Ghost Bears and Rasalhaguians have worked very hard to bring this design to
completion and both sides are very happy with the results. The Bears know they
have a loyal and solid defender for their Dominion, while the Kungsarme are
proud to be an active and vital piece of the Dominion military.

To be sure, this is not the kind of machine a Ghost Bear warrior would pilot.
They do honor and respect their Rasalhague brothers and sisters ways and it is
for THEM that the Storbror was designed.

It is not bad, but it could use another Jump Jet and DHS.  I would personally be inclined to swap in an XLE to get the weight you need because Clan XLEs do not have that pesky instant kill problem the IS versions do, but the Endo would have to go.  This should also leave room for fun toys like ECM, so go have fun and see what you can come up with.

Yeah, good point. I was going for cheaper, completely forgetting how expensive C3B Masters are. This thing already scans in at the checkout line over 23 million C-Bills! EEK! May as well go with the Clan XL then. This will also allow the FRR factories to completely make the frame, armor, and electronics, while the GB factories make the weapons. So not a bad change. Let's see...

How's something like the following? Was struggling to get everything to fit... those dang computers take up too many crits, lol. Managed to keep the BV under 3k, but the C-Bill cost jumped over 35 million!!!  :'(

Anyway, traded out the CT ERPPC for an ER Large Laser. This gives the mech better heat management plus that amazing range Clan ER LL's have! I fit the 3rd JJ, but couldn't get that extra HS, so I think this was a good trade. Dropped a half ton of armor and the ER MLs for 2 Clan Medium Pulse, 2 Clan Small Pulse, and 2 Clan Micro Pulse. Some serious anti-infantry capabilities now plus better at hitting those fast movers that may close with it. Overall a little better, although I'm not sure about all the small pulse. Possibly I could drop another ton of armor for and all those little pulse lasers for another pair of medium pulse lasers?

To be sure, this is not the kind of machine a Ghost Bear warrior would pilot.
They do honor and respect their Rasalhague brothers and sisters ways and it is
for THEM that the Storbror was designed.

That looks much better, and with the ERLL swap you do not need the extra DHS because you can cool the entire long ranged battery at a run now.  As for the secondaries, if you wanted to improve the close quarters firepower more you could swap the Micro Pulse Lasers for ER Small Lasers to bracket out the ERLL with the MPLs and leave the SPLs for anti-infantry work because they are more than capable of getting the job done.  You could also drop the SPLs for a third MPL because 3 MPLs and an ERLL makes a fantastic bracketing configuration, but that would require you allow at least slightly mismatched weapons onto your design.

Thanks Diablo48! As always, the input is very much appreciated!

OK, here's a new look at an old favorite. I know I've posted variants of this before on the older boards, but realized I hadn't posted it here yet, lol. I've messed around with and tweaked it a little some more and am very pleased with the design. Running it in MegaMek has had positive results. It can force PSR's at all ranges it can reach you from which is a plus. It's meant to look like, and perform like Clan mechs, but with the latest cutting edge Inner Sphere tech. Used to have a drawing I made of it I was proud of, but haven't seen it in years. So it looks similar to a Cauldron Born, with an over/under weapon config in each arm (ERLL + ER Flamer) and a shoulder mounted MML-3 on each side, centerline LPL, and some C3i love crammed in as well. It hasn't quite maxed out it's armor potential, but comes close enough we can probably count it as maxed. The speed is respectable, however the mech is fragile by modern standards with its XL Engine. It's also expensive C-Bill-wise. Otherwise it performs very well, and makes for a nice mech to round out a force with. Not an anchor, but something that brings solid firepower at whatever range it decides to engage at.

and while I'm making heavies with XL engines, I wanted something that hit a little harder, but could still roast soft targets to a crispy golden brown. Nothing fancy, but sporting some expensive tech! Arms are free of weapons, freeing up the hands for punching the snot out of anyone who gets too close. It's also very mobile, with a movement profile of 5/8/5. The minimum ranges on its HPPC's can be troublesome however if things do get within them and not close enough to melee with. But overall, kind of a fun design. It does hit hard, and once again, performs well in MegaMek. A fun energy boat, even if it is a little uninspired looking.

here's a much cheaper variant of the Sterbjorn. No XL engine makes it cost under half the C-Bills of the other, while also making it last longer on the battlefield. The armor is a little lighter, but is HFF, while the insides are still ES. The PPCs are standard, giving it the same reach as the other, but without the head-capping ability. They do run quite a bit cooler, so fewer DHS's are mounted. Not as flashy as the other, but a nice cheap variant none-the-less.

I like the Fire Dancer a lot, and while there are some things that could potentially be cleaned up a bit by swapping the LPL for 3 MPLs and a DHS if you wanted to there are no real problems with it.  Just be aware that while it is nice and flexible it lacks the crippling firepower other designs rely on so you will have to watch yourself in a fight with other machines in your weight class.

Now, the first Stenbjörn is a nice design even if it is not the most original thing in the world, but I really do not like the downgrade because the enormous SFE costs you far too much tonnage so I would try cutting the speed to 4/6/4 or 4/6/6 to see what you can come up with.

THANKS! The Fire Dancer has been a staple of my playing since I started designing my own Inner Sphere machines around '93-'94. It has always performed well, if not the best machine. It is fun and very capable. Originally I actually had multiple medium pulse lasers! CT and arms. But found that for whatever reason the CT LPL seemed to work much better. Not sure why. Range maybe? In fact, a simple upgrade that works pretty well (can't decide to be honest if I like it more or not) is upgrading the LPL to an X-Pulse Large Laser. Seems like a really poor upgrade, as heat is harder to manage, but it's great when you really need that pulse bonus to hit, and the added range too, it's fantastic. But the BV goes up a little more with it. I dunno though.

Good point on the Stenbjorn. Wasn't sure about the downgrade either. I liked having it move that fast, but it definitely doesn't hit hard enough for its weight class. Was hoping its movement profile would offset that a little (and playtesting in MM seems to confirm this) but it's still not enough. Wondering. Do you think a slightly different set of weapons could work better? Allowing me to keep the movement at 5/8/5? Possibly go from 2 PPC's to 4 LPPC's? gives me a couple extra tons to work with allowing me to downgrade from HFF to FF maybe? Hmmm... I'm still at work, but I can mess with it a little more and figure something out.

The range advantage and extra concentrated punch on the LPL does work wonders against lights which is why I was not particularly pushing for the change which mostly improves heat management as both brackets gain enough sinks to fire at a run with no gain.  That said, I would not use the X-Pulse Laser because the range is not that pressing with the ERLLs on hand, and the lower heat load is more beneficial to keep you moving and hitting with everything in close combat.

Honestly, the movement profile and engine are the real problem here.  Pushing a SFE up to 5/8 just costs too much on a heavy (except for 60 toners), which is why I suggested switching to a 4/6/6 movement profile to give you comparable maneuverability and save you 7.5 tons at the cost of eating more space.  4/6/4 would also be an option to free up another 8 tons and 8 crits over the iJJ model, but this may be too to slow for you.

This next one is what happens when Inner Sphere designers try to mimic their Clan counterparts.

The name "Vixen" was originally used as a call sign for the Clan "Incubus" before the Inner Sphere was aware of the Clans name for the mech. This Inner Sphere Vixen uses the same kind of design techniques to make a state-of-the-art light battlemech with every weight savings technology available. XL Engine, XL Gyro, Small Cockpit, FF Armor, and ES frame make a light mech with a fairly heavy weapons load out. Although fragile, it can move in fast, hit a target hard (or burn it to the ground) and move out just as fast. With ground speed better than an Ostscout and jump capability the same, this is a choice mech for raiders and scout commanders everywhere. at nearly 6 million C-Bills however, most light mech pilots must settle for far less.

The Vixen is completely crit-packed. The hand actuators had to be removed to fit everything on it. While it saved space, this coupled with the small cockpit makes for a moderately dangerous mech just to pilot! If it falls down, getting back up causes serious problems for the pilot. For this reason (plus the steep price) usually only the most elite pilots end up piloting a Vixen. It has also caused some pilots to refer to it as a "beetle". A nickname referencing when a beetle ends up on its back it has difficulty getting rolled back over... also keeping with the light mech "bug" moniker.

That is much better if you are happy with the 4/6/4 movement profile.  I think 4/6/6 gave it more flavor, but it is impossible to mount that kind of firepower on a 4/6/6 frame so it is really your preference.

Now, the Vixen is not a bad design, but I think you deviated too far from the original here so I went ahead and made my own.  The main gun is a Large X-Pulse Laser to give you some of the range of the Clan version, the ER Medium Lasers were downgraded to standard models to cut the heat load, the Machine Gun battery was cut in half to save weight, and the right hand had to be removed to make room for the main gun, but the result is strikingly similar to the original.

yeah, the slower speed gives me the firepower and keeps the cost way down still. so I think it'll do fine. :)

The Vixen you made is indeed a very nice copy of the original Clan one! Mine wasn't meant to copy the thing so closely as much as the design concepts behind the frame it's built on. Make a light mech with all the light weight goodies! Pack it with weapons.  [rockon]

I like yours better though I think because it has that LXPL and those are cool and underused.  8)

yeah, the slower speed gives me the firepower and keeps the cost way down still. so I think it'll do fine.

as always, thanks for the input!

Thanks.  As for your design, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it and it should work well, my problem was that the payload was just too far away from the original Incubus to really be a derived design.  After all, the frame is really nothing new to either the Inner Sphere or Clans and the changes to the movement profile broke even that resemblance.

As for mine, I am also a big fan of the Large X-Pulse Laser because it gives you the range to really change the game unlike the regular LPL or other X-Pulse Lasers, so when I saw the opportunity to use it without worrying about the tremendous heat load I jumped on it.  Honestly my only real complaint about the design is that you have to close to Machine Gun range to force a PSR, but that is really not that big a deal when you can reliably land 9-point hits from 15 hexes while moving 10/15.
