any chance to put in a request for some of the more oddball stuff from the annex that does not releate to combat? i know why would anyone do that..but some of the articles you guys have done have been very amsuing to say the least....and its funny to see how some of you would do a write up for a common car or something....hehehheh
thanks.
I'm planning to get back to that eventually but the Annex is currently under moratorium.

In line with that, I'd specifically like to request a Miter/Magellan + Shackleton compound article. No ulterior motives or anything.

I would be interested in helping out. I don't know if I can provide the quality or level of detail that the previous ones have been. I enjoy reading them quite a bit however, and would be reluctant to see them go. I looked at the post of what has been done, and it looks like all of the vehicles have been written about already. At least the ones that come to mind.... I'm a little fuzzy on the post 3058 vehicles.

The Merkava got diverted by a research issue regarding the dates and is being shelved at the moment.

Actually, they haven't been and a bunch of the older articles are 'lost' - we know they existed and people might have copies of them but they're not available anymore.  (Do not start reposting them, please - the authors will have to come to their own decisions regarding their work.)

I guess that's good, I looked at the Po, I'm a Capellan Player, and liked what I saw there. I'm not too wild about the PoII either as it happens.  ??? I don't get to play nearly as much as I would like, so much of what I have to say would be speculation. However, I have been playing the game off and on since the early 90's.

I think I could crank one out in two weeks, but a month would be better. I don't have a preference as to what I write about. If I can help great, I'd be glad to.

Too bad about the Merkava... I like those old age of war mechs and tanks.

If I may, I'd like to request permission to do the VotW write-up for the Pollux ADA Heavy Tank once it is released from moratorium.
To the utmost!

How does one go about getting on the list of those that can contribute? Is there a list of pending requests or just pick something, that is not on the moratorium, and write about it?

Just pick something that's not on moratorium, check to see if it hasn't been covered, and write about it.  There isn't a curated list of who can contribute.  Once you're ready for publishing, let me know and I'll put it on the schedule if you want.

I formally request that someone write about the Partisan.

I would be interested in doing that, but it is going to be quite a long article.

I just ordered some from ebay, and plan on using it as a poor-man's assault tank. It has the firepower of a lance of Scorpions, but the cost of only 2 of the mighty light tanks.

Speaking of Partisan: Does any other vehicle have as many variants or more than Partisan? 60t "carrier" somes to mind but even that doesn't have all that many official ones.

Yes, actually, and you don't need to "cheat" to do it.  The Maxim has 16 in at least four different sub-families.  Partisans are only 13 with two sub-families (the SW Heavy Tank and the Air Defense Tank from the Clan Invasion).

Aggregating the LRM/SRM/laser/AC/Arrow IV carrier family together gets you to 15 once you lump in the primitive models.  A similar stunt on the 10 ton APCs comes out to 16, heavy APCs to 15.

Now, if you really want to see this get ridiculous, go count variants of some of the really old BattleMechs, especially Unseen.  There are 22 different Archers alone and I'm not sure they're the most numerous.

You want a challenge? Try doing an article on the Magi, with useful advice for fielding all variants. 8)

...useful...

I wasn't kidding. I'd really like to see someone approach this thing with the intention of making an actual battlefield impact with it, not just "it sucks, leave it at home or use it as a bumper car". Give people a legitimate reason to voluntarily include it in a battle force.

There's a perverse sort of logic to it.  Remember you're dealing with the SLDF when you talk about the original.  These are the same people who bought whole regiments of Chargers without the justification of being on the tail end of a two century technological decline.

It's a garrison unit, a big, scary, really intimdiating cop car.  It's meant to be cruising the mean streets of Taurus or Canopus IV reinforcing that the SLDF is bigger than you, they're scarier than you, and they have so much money they can afford to throw around 70 ton war machines where normal government agencies would invest in a Crown Victoria or maybe a Hummer.  Popgun armament?  Sure, makes sense.  A medium laser or a machine gun is a lot less likely to accidentally do major damage in low intensity urban warfare than an AC/20 is.

If someone decides to move past low intensity urban warfare, that's why the SLDF never got around to retiring the Hunchback and the Victor after the Reunification War, and the Magi is no longer their primary tool.  Instead, in serious combat, a Magi has two uses: Running around as a heavy recon screen for slower units (like all those silly Burkes and Pumas the SLDF keeps buying) and being the first unlucky SOB around the corner to find out whether there's an ambush.  That's why they're tracked - tracked units are harder disable or fence in than a wheeled vehicle is unless you're prepared to drop a building on them.  The armor gives them a better chance of surviving being under the building, too, and casual abuse by weapons that will torch your average patrol vehicle without trouble is just going to bounce off a Magi's flanks.

There you go! I see the Magi in a different light, but this is exactly the kind of discussion I go into any 'otW thread hoping to see. A minimum of 'hurr hurr, it sucks, ignore it', and people discussing how to actually use a multimillion-*-bill machine that high command saw fit to issue to them, possibly for reasons that DON'T involve retaliation for situations stemming from the mishandling of the CO's offspring or spouse.

And with that, I'll leave off, and save further comments for an actual Magi thread.

Another thing about the Magi is that it's a ton over weight, at least if you use the Sarna reading of two tons of MG ammo (Which, given Moonsword's description of why it was built, makes sense)

Remember Rule 1 of Sarna: It is the LEAST reliable source out there. Always check an actual product, and/or do the math yourself.

Seeing as how wikis are usually written by fans, and gaming fans tend to be somewhat nitpicky on the details, I always thought it very strange that Sarna and Lexicanum have such bad wraps in terms of accuracy of information...

For some reason some of the editors aren't as nitpicky
