HEX FELT MATS
« on: 28 October 2011, 08:16:29 »
Has anyone had an luck with using treated felt? I am a newbie to gaming terrain and am looking for something cheaper to enter the scene. I plan on trying mini rules or Quick strike, but would also like the flexibility a hexed mat gives.

Thanks Sam

One of the players in my local Battletech group has a 4'x6' economy mat from Monday Knight Productions. We've used it a few times. It's held up well over the years and gets the job done.

I have been using thre mats, and they are pretty high quality.  They are really thin for starters, and light weight.

They have nice hills as well.

From the wild child website:
Our 48” x 72” mats are made from heavy grade 2mil styrene

Does this mean they are foam?

I have one of the old GeoHex felt maps I use as a base for the rest of my GeoHex.  It works great for large games.

Hotz Artworks out of Canada makes a great felt product.  I've been using a few of their mats for years and they stand up well to use and abuse...

Any experience using the Hotz mats with Heroscape; and if so, do the Heroscape tiles match up well with the mat or are they skewed at all?

Thanks!

Heroscape are 44mm (1.73") from edge to edge across the middle of the hex; 25.5mm (1") along a hex-side.  For one or two tiles you hardly see the difference.  After 6-10 tiles, it begins to add up.  At that point it's strictly asthetics.  I have used 1.75" water among my heroscape land and it works, but I find I tend to avoid using the sheet because it doesn't line up exactly along every hex.  To each his own.

I hope that helps,
JB

To an extent, depending on how particular you are.  See john blackwell's post above for more details.

The Hotz mats seem like a good deal when ordering what should I be aware of?

The Hotz mats seem like a good deal when ordering what should I be aware of?

1) Hotz seems to have a tendency to run their orders in "batches" (i.e. they wait until they have some number of orders and then do printing of those orders).  this can lead to some annoyingly long wait times.  They say 4-6 weeks but I've seen it go as long as 8 weeks, or as few as two weeks.

2)  They are shipping from Canada, so make sure to note their shipping costs.

3)  Getting the mats folded and shipped is fine;  they bounce back quickly from the folding process.  Heck, I stored one not neatly folded in a storage box for a few months after Gencon a few years ago and it bounced right back.

I ordered a small, basic hex mat from Monday Knight on Sept 8, and it just shipped a few days ago, so it would seem both popular sources have a "lead" time to factor in.

I too have a Hotzmat and they are a great product. Also have a space mat with out hexes for space games. Highly recommended. Can be a long delivery time.

I'm considering buying one of these .

Do you happen to know how close the color is to GW's grass flock ?

If it's close enough I can use all the hills I already made with the MKP mats instead of
toting around a bunch of big styrafoam sheets .

It's the unflocked economy mat. It won't match, but won't be unduly distracting. After more than a year's absence, our Commando's MKP mat made an appearance during our last game. The flocked hills (both homemade and geohex) couldn't have matched the mat, but neither I nor anyone at the table noticed.

I have a MKP economy map and GeoHex hexed hills. They don't match, but Scat's right, it's nowhere near a "OMG that's hideous! I'd never play on that trash!" kinda difference.

Hmmm...
I think that when the tax return gets in I'm going to buy one of the MKP 4' X 6 ' Flocked Hex Mats .
You can't really  judge colors by pics on the net .

If I do I'll have to make a thread on it and do some color comparisons .

I just got a Hotz mat with 1.75" hexes and used it in my last game with Heroscape. It worked great. Here are a few snaps from the game.

(Two tiles high = 1 level) The single level path in the middle is a Level 0 roadway leading to the spaceport at the far end of the table.

That's a great looking setup. How long did it take to assemble the heroscape tiles?

I pre-built the setup at home a couple of days before and then transported it to the store and set it up the night before the game. Pre-building took a couple of hours and about 40 minutes at the store to set it back up. I used rubber bands to keep the hills together and then broke the roadway apart with stickies to indicate which ends go together.

That's a great setup.
I use the 2 hex tiles =1 level also. I also use dark green felt that is stick on (applied to a green woods tile) to represent heavy woods.

I really like 3d terrain and feel that it brings eye catching pop to Battletech.

Definitely. I got a lot of positive comments by people filtering in and out of the store over the terrain.

Thanks
