During the Jihad, the Combine investigated a number of potential alterations of the Hatamoto series of battlemechs, the most famous of which, the -Kaeru variant, even saw limited series production. However, a number of other, less-radical variations were produced in limited numbers during the Jihad in an effort to bolster the Combine's faltering military. The HTM-29K -Kin series was one of the more infamous, as Davion intelligence obtained blurry photographs of a preproduction model in 3068, which they termed FUTURE HATAMOTO. Evidence of it was presented officially during various budgetary subcommittee meetings in the Draconis March, leading to the funding of a number of projects which, owing to the devastation of the war, never saw the light of day and instead drained much-needed funds from the state's coffers. The HTM-29K was, alas, merely a technology demonstrator, pressed into service to fend off a Robinson Rangers deep penetration raid into Kuritan space. The original was lost in 3068, but two more were hastily assembled in a bid to win the contract which eventually when to the -KMZ series Charger instead. One survived the Jihad, but with severe internal damage, and was pressed into service as a gate guardian at a cantonment on New Samarkand, with all essential systems stripped out.
