Putting together a Donegal Guards Company
« on: 17 February 2011, 14:16:06 »
So as the thread title states, I'm working on putting together a Donegal Guards company and was looking for some feedback on my list.

What I have so far:

Wolfhound
Griffin
Phoenix Hawk
Avatar
Dragon Fire
Thunderhawk

Whenever IWM has the archive back up and running, I plan to order:

Starslayer
Spector
Gallowglas

And then to finish it off, when I get my hands on a copy of the new box set I plan to add:

Cicada
Banshee
Zeus
Awesome
and Commando if need to play a light/recon lance

I know it's more than 12 mechs, but I will mix them in and out as I need them. The main thing I see this company lacking is LRM/missile support. The Avatar in it's B config can play the role if need be, and to a limited extent the Zeus and Griffin, but it's not much.

Perhaps add a Cobra for additional fire support?

Yeah, it has weak armor but it's speed is still good. Just a thought.

Yeah, Cobra seems decent. The low armor definitely seems like the weak point. other than that, it's got endo steel and FF and no XL engine to worry about. I'm not a huge fan of the mini though.

Are you looking for a pure LCAF only designs or would you be willing to use I.S. general mechs? Lyrans are all about direct fire weapons, the bigger the better. So check out the general use missile carriers and see what you like  O0

I would probably get an Archer first. I'm just not that used to using missile boat, or at least IS LRM ones with minimum range, so I tend to rely on direct weapons more. Aside from the missile boats, does the rest of the list look good? Versatile enough?

Do you have a particular unit in mind? The 2nd and 4th have very different compositions from, say, the 8th or 17th.

Strike first. Strike hard. No mercy.

Or the 6DG.  If you're more used to direct fire stuff stick with it. If you're really wanting a missile boat then look at the Fed Suns stuff also. Dervish, crusader,Archer Stalker,viking...all good

I didn't really have one in mind when designing the list, no. I just read up on what mechs were available and picked the ones I liked. I didn't pick a particular unit because I didn't want to be limited to a certain era when that unit was active. I figured that if I just kept it general it would be more useful. Not that it really matters too much for pickup games.

I just like the Donegal Guards. One for their paint scheme, simple and effective (I'm doing the bluish gray with the yellow and black striped plates and checkerboard decals, sort of based off the Uziel from the 4th on camospecs), and two because I play Irish music so I like the heritage of the unit.

So no obvious issues with the list then?

The Second is a good choice.

Go with the Salamander. 60 LRMs/turn from that beast.

For a Missle Boat I would go Archer, Salamander, or Longbow.  While my preference is the Dervish, its a davion design.

Well, I wasn't only looking for missile boats, just general feedback and suggestions on the list. The missile boat thing was just the main thing I saw it lacking so I mentioned it. But yeah, the Dervish seems like a good choice even if it isn't pure Lyran. I like the balance of speed, armor, and firepower on mediums. Plus it comes with the box set so I won't have to go out of my way to get it, just the box which I plan to get anyway for some of the others, plus the awesome maps and high quality plastics.

I think for supporting mechs like the Missle Boats and Snipers  that the Mobility of the Dervish and Griffin fits well for cencentrating firepower at the point where its needed in support of our Heavies and Assaults that make up the front line.

I was just looking through TRO 3075 and noticed the Crossbow. It seems like it could be a good balance between a medium and heavy missile boat/support, if only there was a modern LRM version. Would be nice to be able to pick a pure Lyran design, one that actually has some armor unlike the Cobra.

They did, but they replaced the LRMs with SRMs which changes the role of it completely.
