Anyone tried using a Gesso before?
« on: 05 September 2012, 00:35:11 »
Last one I swear!  And I'm not sure where to post this though.
Anyways, I've searched the internet on how to primer when the weather conditions are bad.  The main solution- the Bob Ross brand Gesso (Gray or White recommended)!  I tried it and it works like a charm (Of course I thin them down before applying).  Here's the article for what I'm talking about:

Here another article, much more detailed.

And that stuff is awesome.

Vallejo has new brush on primers in different colors and they work great.

I tried two different brands of Gesso and never managed to get the results that others have gotten.  I've been using Tamiya Metal Primer and been enjoying that and I do have a bottle of Reaper brush-on primer I've been meaning to try.

I wanted to try gesso before, but I was told that it would crack or would obscure details. I might give it another shot though. I haven't been too happy with my paint-on primers so far.

edit: looking at those links, I gotta say it's pretty convincing. When I get time to paint again, I'm definitely going to give it a shot.

I've used Gesso for the terrain pieces I make (Gesso over floral foam) and it's great for that.  I may just have to give this a try too...

i don't think i would recommend this.... in college, we (art students) used gesso as a primer on canvas because when it dried, it helped to stretch the canvas taut across the canvas frame boards and eliminate some of the canvas texture. it could also double as a glue when introducing objects such as leaves or paper scraps to a canvas. This does not sound like a good mini primer.

if you get gesso to work, more power to you.

Gesso is an acrylic. Its pretty close to the vallejo paint on primers. So whether you use gesso or the Vallejo stuff you need to use thin coats and if it gets too thick in one spot use an unloaded wet brush to pull it away. I use the paint on primer because i like to be able to control how much primer gets into a spot. Like hard to reach places. When i used spray primer i tended to overspray to get to the hidden/hard to get to places and it would overspray the rest taking away detail. With the paint on stuff i don't have that problem.
