My first cast building

I decided to try my hand at casting a building.  I used a plastic tray that Pokémon cards came in and resin from Michael's.  I got a few air bubble voids but all in all I'm happy with the result.  I also learned a couple things. 

1.  Don't let the resin set to long before using it. I bought this stuff last fall and just got around to using it.  Most of it hardened in the can, so I got 1 shallow cast where I should have gotten many. The tray I used should have made a solid level 1, maybe level 2 building but I didn't have enough liquid resin. Instead I had to make it more like the top of a large partially underground building.

2. Use some kind of mold release.  I didn't and the tray was stuck to the mold, so I had to tear it off in pieces to release the cast.

Most resins produce an exothermic reaction when curing. This heat will cause styrene and lexan to shrink (the plastic you used for a mold).


Yes, A mold release would probably have helped, but the heat from the reaction would most likely warp the mold.


try pouring plaster in the plastic, then make a rubber mold of that.

That actually turned out really nice.  Put a few turrets, other defensive items, and some utility vents on it and you've got yourself a hardened bunker complex.  Personal opinion, of course.
