For me, it's the same old same old. Currently working on an Austin 10 that another shop has been "working on". $900 for a carb rebuild? Really? And you should see what they did to the float. :o

What I want to know is this. I drive a Focus with a 2.0L that calls for my oil to be changed every 3000 miles, yet the EXACT SAME engine in a Euro Focus asks for it to be changed every 15000. Whats the deal? Do we use different oil here or have I just been Big Oil's B all these years?

3k miles has been the rule of thumb in the US for ages. My Toyota is 5k. 15k sounds a little high to me.

Yes, but if the engine has the SAME PART # and Europe has it clearly listed as 15K, what other explanation could there be?

It probably has to do with the warranty. FordUSA will not warrant an engine that does not change its oil every 3k miles, while FordEurope really doesn't care.

Even though they are the same car from the same company, each has its own policies and procedures.

Best way to know when to change your oil? Have an analysis done. Around here NAPA sells a kit that you put some oil in and send off and the company sends back an analysis. You get A LOT of data back, but it also tells you if your oil needs to be changed, or how much longer you should be able to go.
Myself (I have a fair amount of mechanical training) and my friends (2 mechanics and one teaches mechanics) all do 5K with conventional(Valvoline) oil. Synthetics are a whole different ball game.

I'd like to change oil on the car more often, but so far it hasn't hurt the few times it's gone a couple thousand over.... the van I drive so little that I change it just to freshen once I hit 3,000.

Currently working on:

1971 Challenger R/T - complete restoration - next step are restoring the brake booster, heater box and get the dash assembled and installed

1987 Porsche 944 Turbo - need to get whatever holds in the back of the sunroof and figure out the klunking that happens when coming to a stop

1975 Plymouth Trailduster Sport - transmission rebuild

1991 Mazda B2200 - need to figure out what is draining the battery while parked - suspect ignition switch

Mitsubishi Montero SWB (friend's car) - possible engine replacement

1972 Plymouth Duster (friend's car) - pro street conversion, installing mini tubs

Damn - the shop is a hopping

I would seriously question the part of being exactly the same.

The only ones that want you to change your oil every 3000 are the Jiffy Lube losers.

Oil change is dictated by two things - how long until the molecular chain breaks down and how much crap it can carry. The oil filter helps with the carrying and motor design and oil spec with the breakdown.

Some engines like Porsche and diesels use large capacity and superior filters. Both my 928 and my Cummins Turbo diesel were changed every 7500 miles.

If I waited 3000 miles to change my oil, it would probably go at least a year and a half between oil changes. As it is, I change it about every 5 months.

Just getting ready to repair/restore/modify a 1986 AMC Eagle Sport 2+. I figure my 16year old daughter can and will be plenty embarassed when she has to drive it.

And for the oil change thing, different manufacturers have different ideas as to when they need to be done. Like I said earlier, Toyota recommends 5k, according to Wombat, Ford is at 3k. Personally, I would not go over 6k without at least changing the filter. The only car the I stress that the oil must absolutely be changed every 3k without fail is the old minis and 1100/1300 series of cars. Especially the automatics. With the gearbox in the oil pan and charing oil, it will affect performance and shifting and can lead to failure.

My friend made his daughter drive an AMC Gremlin so your being a saint. Plus that's actually a cool machine and rare.

My buddies had an AMC Eagle for a "winter car" (the summer car was a recently repainted 74 Charger). Awesome car. Went through quite a bit of stuff, too. Too bad we were 17 and destroyed it...

Same sad story happened to my friend's '92 Eclipse GSX. That car was fun, in a sadistic way. Lots of go, at the cost of no human-shaped object capable of actually fitting in the driver's seat.

'Cause I'm that kinda guy, here is a project I did today.

It's the oil strainer out of a 1934 MG PA. The screen was torn and failing, so I replaced it. 8)

Fresh out of the oil pan, after a rinse in solvent.

All the parts unsoldered.

All cleaned up and with a new screen soldered on.

No, it has a couple chips and scratches that I primarily blame on my wife. I need to get them fixed, but ponder a complete repaint to a new color.

Yeah, I normally don't color change either. But in the end, they technically only made 876 of my car. With a paint change I can make it utterly unique.

Yes - it's common with these new crappy paints - clear coat over base coat. The clear coat fails and flakes or peals off.
