MWO: Champion
« on: 11 July 2018, 16:48:49 »
Next mech is the 60 ton Champion.

My first thought was, "How many 5/8 60 tonners do we need in MWO?"

My second thought was "Good job Alex." Still fugly, tho.

What were your thoughts?

Not fond of the straightened legs.  Maybe too many chicken leg designs perhaps?

Maybe its the angle of the picture, but still looks off to me.  The rounded torso does not fit with the legs.

They've always been human-style legs in BattleTech, just with a little backward slant. I'm surprised they didn't change it up, but I like it.

Working on the Clanbuster version, and modified the legs to look a little less distasteful, but the art seems to be a little inconsistent with the leg angle to me.

I would've preferred Huntsman-style digitigrade, myself.

Yeah...uh...no.  Just no.   :(

Was hoping for an Ostroc, Ostsol, Crusader or even a Charger, especially with the HG crap out of the way.

But this, IMO, doesn't even look good in concept.

The Vulcan is still tempting me and I was holding out to see what the next IS offering was...but this?

As I have the Assassin, I'm not sure the Vulcan is needed (for cash) in my inventory even though I love the mech (original and MWO).

Shoulda got the Vulcan early adopter package and swapped it if something better came a long, but at this rate...sheesh.

Now I most likely have to wait and pass on another Clan offering before the next IS.

Dang...

I think it looks beautiful.  It reminds me a lot of the MW3 rendition.

since MWO is the primary source for BT-PC, how many Star League designs are available to a potential add-on to BT-PC?

Not that many really.

In MWO and available 3025
Flea
Javelin
Assassin
Crab
Annihilator
Cyclops

3025 Unseen in MWO
Phoenix Hawk
Archer
Warhammer
Marauder
Rifleman

3025 but not yet in MWO
Vulcan
Champion

Beyond that aside from Nightstar (recovered SL design) everything is just outside 3025 (Wolfhound, Raven) or Clan Invasion and beyond.

The Raven was mentioned to maybe be up and coming and soon as HBS could figure out a good way to implement ECM.

So what happens when there's a champion version?

Cats and dogs living together. Divide by Zero time. Confusion AND Delay.

Seriously though, there won't be any Champion Champion, ever since the skill tree they've lost their value as a concept and PGI haven't released one.

I would imagine it's just simple radar jamming, requiring LOS before combat, perhaps combining that with a morale bonus? and from the Raven's POV, one step up in ID of target (Low Tactics skill would still raise the target data from UNKNOWN to UNKNOWN 'Mech or Vehicle, etc.). the only obvious give away that anything is happening is if your CPU still stutters when trying to do Stealthy Game Events in real time.

I do like that Champion design, regardless...

LoL I forgot they even did that... was there ever a good reason they did that one besides needed a SL Castle Brian design?

Ah yes, the Champion... the Mech that looked like some pilot butterfingered his Aerospace fighter straight into a Mech, but the enormous impact somehow bent space time and turned reality into a cartoon and for that reason, it now has legs. The Mech that had all of it's weaponry in the torso and has arms that wouldn't look out of place on a superheavy cargo lifter workmech, but for some reason has neither lower arm actuators nor hand actuators in them.  ???

Ironically, these aspects of the Mech that seem ridiculous in CBT will probably work really well for it in MWO. The weapon hardpoints are all placed relatively high, even the arm hardpoints on the variants that will have them, and the humongous arms should work very well as a shield for the torso and to spread the damage around. And look at those spindly legs! Considering how fast this thing will be able to move(I'm counting on a high engine cap since it's stock configuration has a 300 rated engine on a 60 frame), those won't be easy to hit either...

I'm torn and confused. I absolutely HATE the tendency of the MWO playerbase to leave the arms empty and put minimal armor on them in order to use them as damage reducing shields, especially on Mech's that are otherwise humanoid or should have gun arms like the Executioner or Hellbringer... but this Mech is designed that way!

Definitely liking the legs over the original WTF legs. Upper body is not that dramatically different. Overall, I like it as a Champion.

I prefer he with chicken legs. If they can make the Marauders look good, they could have done it with this. I guess they were saving time / money for doing generic bi-peddle normal walking thing.

Looks less like a turkey in-game than in the concept art.

Still might be one.

But I welcome it anyways.

You can repaint it. So it could be the same pattern, but in neon green and bubblegum pink
