Reven's Secret Protomech Lab

I've always been fascinated with Protos, no real reason I can give why. Its just the thought of five of these strange things trying to equal a single battlemech and I've got to see how they can do it.

The Tengu is a bigger, meaner, faster Roc. Sure, its jump range is 60 meters shorter, but its speed...

The Roc topped out at a decent 86kph. The Tengu can do 129kph in short bursts. Armed with the same ER medium laser, the Tengu also sports as much armor as the frame can possibly hold.

All of this for just short of 900k in Cbills or a hair under 450BV.

I've been wanting to use this design somewhere in battletech. We all know (And roll our eyes) at Battletech using the lineart from the Macross Series. So why not use a bit more of it?

Now, I'm trying to mimic the weapons loadout of the Queadluun-Rau from SDF:M, which was two rapid fire laser guns in the arms, two auto-cannons in the torso, and a bunch of missiles. Soooo...

2 Micro-Pulse Lasers, 2 AP-Gauss Rifles and five SRM tubes for that missile barrage. Now, movement was a big problem. See the Queadluun-Rau is known for flying in-spite of the fact it has no actual lift generating surfaces. It just uses sheer jet power to fly. So to mimic that, I used IJJs, with a total jump range of six. That's pretty good in my opinion, especially if you fly into a city with it, which its short range arsenal just fits.

That's right baby, Orion Protomech! With a 'big' ER Medium Laser replacing the auto-cannon the little guy clones the classic machine pretty closely. It has an LRM-5 and SRM-3, with 6 reloads and 5 respectively. A pair of ER Small Lasers, one per arm, ape the old medium lasers. The proto is 'slow' at merely 64/kph, but it comes with as much armor as it possibly can to coat the little machine.

When deployed in points this little bugger is a real terror in cities, due to wide variety of weapons.

The 2nd Medusa type protomech maintains the speed of the original, and actually augments it with a Myomer Booster to help it accelerate to 86/kph in short bursts. The weapons are all swapped out, with the machine now sporting three machineguns and a single big ER Medium Laser mounted over the shoulder. But its the addition of a Clan ECM suite with really changes things up. This machine is meant to break C3 systems in a city or heavy jungle, swamping an enemy unit when an entire point of these buggers come bouncing over the horizon. Armor is exactly the same.

I've been working on this idea for quite a while, a trooper Proto-Mech for the dark ages that uses the 15 ton chassis cause really its the most efficient ton for ton and you can do some interesting things with it.

So, the Jackal protomech. Armed with a torso mounted ER Medium Laser it at once draws comparison with the Roc, both sporting the ER Medium Laser. While the Roc doesn't quite cost half of what the Jackal does in BV2 the Jackal does come with some other options. The Jackal is faster on its feet, sporting the very nice 6/9 movement ratio, and given that Protomechs don't need to make piloting checks suddenly that speed on concrete is amazing. It does have a 90 meter jump range to help it get over the impassable terrain it can't conquer but don't count on jumping for its agility. The machine also sports a full ECM system and a light active probe, again lending it to the Urban Warfare role. To handle the inevitable infantry encountered it sports a pair of regular machineguns, 1 in each arm, each fed from a 20 burst magazine. Armor is maxed out, meaning the torso can handle 2 full Gauss hits and not breach.

So a regular Commando has a BV of 541 and this Protomech has a BV of 559. So its slightly more expensive but has the same firepower output, at least for a while. It has the same SRM-4 and SRM-6, each with 9 rounds of fire total. But instead of the IS Medium Laser the Protomech instead uses a Medium Chemical Laser to avoid needing heatsinks to cool the weapon. The mech has 3.35 tons of armor applied to it...and roughly I think its actually better protected than the original commando, especially when you could the near miss rule of the Protomech.

So, for just over 700 BV you can now get two ER Medium Lasers and a 9 point melee strike! (6 from the ProtoMech Quad Melee System and 3 from being a super heavy ProtoMech)

Moving at 5/8/5 it matches the Roc for mobility and has pretty tough armor with 30 points across the chest and 25 on the legs. Ironic that it also has more armor on its head than any Mech outside of Super-Heavy.

I really respect your commitment to this concept. I have a few protomech minis that I got in an eBay lot, and they look like an ugly horse and an alternate reality where the lead singer of KISS is also some kind of bird.  You have inspired me to at least learn what they are, and whether they make sense.

Alright, so its a case of 'almost' with the Wolfhound. The protomech's big laser almost matches the usual Inner Sphere Large Laser for damage. The Clan ER Small Lasers 'almost' match up with the IS Medium Laser except for range.

But still...not quite half the BV2 of the low tech Wolfhound, with no need to make piloting checks?

The reason for the micro pulse laser instead of a third ER Small Laser is so I don't have to shave 5 points of armor off the proto to fit it with the extra weight. With the ER Medium in a main gun mount the mech can use ether arm to fire, instead of just losing the right and losing the big gun.

Since the Hell's Horses use the quad version of the Procyon, I thought why not revisit the original weapons loadout? So for 255 BV you get a 6/9/3 pair of ER Small Lasers that can cover most ground and even though the armor is not maxed out it is pretty good.

Okay, I was gonna call it the Triceratops but that's slightly too long to write so I went with "Trike" instead. With no less than 3 ER Medium Lasers mounted directly in its frame this protomech sports a pretty impressive level of firepower. A machinegun is also mounted for anti-infantry pruning. Faster than the old Minotaur as it moves 4/6/4 it has near max armor its frame can handle.
