Scorpion!!! Classic Quads confirmed at last!

Also:  Iron Cheetah not quite as fast as I expected, and no word of the newly reborn CSJ on the entry.

Reminder, RGs are dated circa 14 November 3150. Before IlClan proper and whatever follows that.

I've waited 20 years for a canon Iron Cheetah, and I feel like I was so so rewarded by the write-up today. It honors and enhances that little bit of fiction from the original write-up and brings it into the 32nd Century seamlessly. Bravo!

Good point!  Thanks for reminding me of that bit of perspective.

I think the Iron Cheetah is a serious contender for the deadliest assault Omni ever built, at this point.

  • Once, we had gods.
Finally, after this long, I can tell you how the Iron Cheetah came to be fully canonized, and how it was ordained by the universe to be. Last summer, when the Rec Guides were jut beginning to be released, jymset and I were having a chat. I don't remember the exact details, but we were discussing the Dominator, whose entry I had written, and how it was used to sort of lure Wolf's Dragoons to join the Wolf Clan. The subject changed to the Rec Guide series in general, and jymet mentioned that he needed one more Clan assault 'Mech in the 90-100 ton range. I immediately offered the Iron Cheetah.

At first he said, no this isn't the right time to try reintroducing old magazines 'Mechs. So I said maybe Alaric is resurrecting it to try lure the Fidelis to join him, and reestablish Clan Smoke Jaguar. That got a response. Hour of the Wolf was still several months away and I had no insider knowledge of it, but my suggestion slotted in so perfectly with it that jymset sent the idea up the ladder. After a bit of back and forth, it was approved.

Now, the actual "meant to be part". Several months down the line, I'm writing the Iron Cheetah and jymset contacts me with a Kickstarter pilot. We've been adding these to Rec Guide entries whenever we can, so it was nothing unusual. Except that this person had had requested that his notable pilot be his friend, who has passed. Names always escape me so I can't give the full account, but he said that his friend had long been involved in Battletech, and had even designed a 'Mech that had been printed in an old magazine. That 'Mech was, of course, the Iron Cheetah. It was already going to happen anyway, but this little twist of serendipity told me that we'd done the right thing. The notable pilot, Canis Dirus, is the man who gave us the Iron Cheetah, and it was my pleasure to usher it into the new era for him.

Now, go pester IWM for the mini!

*makes otter sounds* it looks like it would team up well with the Arcas.

I can't wait to take the C out for a test drive.

I'm also liking they kept all the Iron Cheetah's original configurations (and added a new one).  I'll be using the B again soon.   >:D

It teams up well with everyone. It started as a Firemoth/Viper replacement then the Kickstarter brought them back. So it grew a little, evolved a little.

You're welcome. So many times over the last several pages did I want to point to you and say "Listen to this guy!" But I like writing for Battletech, so that NDA is sacred.

Jal, I heart you.

David Briedis, I hope we did you proud.

And it's not the Konito.

You know, at the 11th hour we included an easter egg to get the Bears - who, let's be honest, have been whinging true to usual form all along this entire RecGuide series  :violin:   :D - even more excited, but it's not been called out yet...

I've been holding off buying the recguides untill they get compiled,so I figured it was a mech all ready released ^_^;.

You know it took me 20 years to notice Clan Goliath Scorpion references both Scorpions and Goliaths. Coincidence? I think not...

Disappointed by the Orion  :(
I had been hoping for a IS tech refresh, essentially updating the -K to common, if not high-end, tech. Not really a fan of post-Succession Wars Orion variants as it is.
Plus the fact we don't have Orion C out yet makes this doubly annoying.

Surprised the Iron Cheetah is in fact available as per its original fluff! Well, sorta. Doesn't solve my force building problem though, ain't quite early enough most likely. Not terribly enthused about the high tech configuration but the originals give me plenty to work with.
Also, the info box pod-space is wrong, showing two tons too low pod-space.

I find the Rime Otter to look hilarious. Because it looks like Omnified Grizzly... and isn't that the 'Mech the Ghost Bears really like remaking? Pretty sure some of their 'Mechs were basically "let's do a garrison 'Mech with somewhat eclectic armament that isn't actually that different from what we've done before".
Have to study it a bit more to form an actual opinion though. (Plus i keep wondering if the design spreads from the Ghost Bears.)
EDIT Seems to have hand actuators on the prime erroneously.

Rime Otter, huh?

Are we... are we running out of names?
Good news is the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show an immediate latency of 44.6 years. So if you're thirty or over you're laughing. Worst case scenario you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you've forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator, it makes a happy face.

I couldn't think of anything when I was asked to design a new 60 ton Clan OmniMech. Then I logged onto my news feed and started perusing headlines, and there was one about Sojourner Truth...

When I saw the picture I was wondering if they got to the  redesign of the Grizzly or did a derivative design.

I don't know what to think of the Scorpion.

The art is awesome to be sure. Really recreates the original Scorpion but much much improved. I do miss the 3085 Scorpion look though, the vertical launch system mounted in the back of the 'Mech looks awesome, kinda pity this Scorpion doesn't have that.
At the same time, the art is part of what makes me find the Scorpion weird. It doesn't feel like a 'Mech, instead it is more like a "weapons" platform". Granted, it ain't the only Quad to have this going on for it, this is rather common for Quads. May be one reason like the Ursa and Thunder Fox so much, they feel more... lively? Maybe not the right word but something about them reduces them being just weapons platforms.

Functionally, the MASC (or Supercharger) really adds to the Scorps. Makes it easier to move around, find good spots to go hull down, perfect for a sniper. The weapons are a bit tricky though, always thought the SRM/PPC combo was a bit questionable. Yes, the SRM makes for a reasonable weapon to shoo away anyone who wants to come close, or delivering crits once the PPC has opened the target up. But at the same time, the Scorpion is a sniper. Feel like LRMs would complement or offer alternate to the PPC better. Granted, this would be like the Griffin though.

The C variant does work around this, fortunately.
Kinda think that, despite being disappointed with the Orion C, a Wolf Empire unit built upon Wolf-produced Cs and Inner Sphere 'Mechs or other mixed tech machines would be interesting. Something to consider... once/if miniatures for certain 'Mechs ever appear.
