Question about the Aurora
« on: 16 December 2021, 17:10:37 »
Hey all,  I'm trying to reconcile what Sarna says about the Aurora & I think its got to have some typos.

Specifically it mentions 164 tons of cargo in the main body & then 154 in the variant descriptions.
Assuming the 164 is wrong.

Also, I can't seem to make the math work for the Battle Armor Variant & Combined Arms Variant cargo bay pod layouts.
Anyone have access to the RS3075UnAbr-Cutting Edge that can confirm the layout of the 4 pods?

It seems like there is either not enough BA/Infantry in the descriptions or the Cargo #s are also off in those descriptions too.

BA seems to work for me. 4 Mech bays = 600 tons.

8 light vehicle bays = 400 tons. 24 squads = 192 tons (24 x 8). 2 bays with 4 tons of cargo = 8 tons = 600 tons. Two Bays have 3 vehicles each, then 2 BA bays have 1 vehicle and 12 squads and 4 tons of cargo.

CA 10 light bays = 500 tons 48 tons of infantry and 52 tons of cargo. Sarna lists 202 tons of cargo, but I think it should be 206.

Okay so I just realized from your math what I had done wrong w/ the BA.   That one is on me, helps if you have the right starting BA tonnage.

The other question is what is the composition of the 48 tons of Infantry for the Combined Arms?

5-Foot
6-Jump
7-Motor

24 Tons per cargo pod.

12 Tons could be 2x6 or 5+7.

The infantry bays aren't that specific. They're literally stat'd as 24 tons each rather than split up into types of bays.

Recently came back to this project.

I'm basically looking to use the Aurora for the BA & Infantry pods since I can get Mechs/Vees/ASF in much more common dropships.

I think the following should be more than sufficient to carry my infantry

6-8 Platoons of BA & 8 Platoons of mixed Infantry Types is a pretty decent selection I think & the 6 Light Vees & extra cargo space helps w/ food requirements.

EDIT, removed Code, concept is using the 2 BA Pods & 2 Combined Arms type pods w/ none of the triple vee pods.

I'm not entirely sure how that was a custom unit since there were no actual unit stats in my post.

But I removed the "code" tags & rewrote it to keep it more general

It wasn't one of the stock Auroras, therefore it was a custom Aurora.

Remember, this isn't saying you *can't* talk about such a thing, this is saying that there's an entire section of the forums dedicated to discussing such things. Ignoring the hard work of the people who set that up just for folks like you is very rude.

So I recently got an answer to the "what kind of infantry is in the Aurora" question.

https://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php?topic=83831.0;topicseen

It seems it is 4 Platoons of Jump Infantry, no Foot/Motor troops.

Off on a bit of a tangent here, but, we have 3 rates for Daily Consumables in the rules.

Quarters (5T/7T/10T) are 1 Ton / 200 People
Bays  (Free w/ "Unit-X" Bay) are 1 Ton / 20 People
Cargo is listed as 1 Ton / 5 People

So here is my question.
Do we have tonnage for just throwing people in cargo?
Is it the same as loading in a vehicle, say a Maxim/Foot Platoon, so 3T gets you 30 bodies?
Actually, that is Anti-Mech trained IIRC?

Isn't it an even lower weight w/o AM Gear, like 85KG / Person?
Is this what you would use if you were say, just loaded up the decks of a Mule to evac civilians quickly?
So 100 people is 8.5 Tons?

I'm picturing something like BSG w/ people in cots or sleeping on the deck.
Basically it would look like a scene from a movie where a Highschool Gym is a Disaster Shelter.

Anyway, is that the correct weight?   Use the Foot-Non-AM weights?

I think 85kg per person (on average) is right.

Thanks Daryk.

I think I have this math right.
252 Passengers in Bays = 12.6 Tons of Food/Water Per Day.
255 Tons of Consumables = 20.24 Days

Feel free to say if I'm off.

I seem to recall in the past there was a post about Bays > Qtrs till the 6 month point but my shows the conversion is around 4 months, though maybe that was with 2nd Class Quarters?

Code: [Select]
1400 People Qtrs-T T/Dy 30-D 90-D 120-D 180-D
Steerage 7000 7 210 630 840 1260
###-Bays 250 70 2100 6300 8400 12600
Cargo Deck 119 280 8400 25200 33600 50400

Cargo is basically never worth it outside of the in system movement &/or an an emergency evac/retreat to 1 system over where it costs but can be justified.

The break point for Quarters (Steerage) vs. Bays is about 90 days.  People as cargo is something to you want to avoid at all costs, as you outline.

When I'm designing ships, I usually install Quarters for all the Bay personnel, and use the Bays as SAR bunks.  That gets the life support costs right and avoids stressing the system when you have additional people aboard (at least until you exceed the number of Bay quality bunks).

Okay, cool, so I'm not off in my table, I just had 180 stuck in memory for some reason.

Yep, I do the same, we've mentioned this before.
I think I got the idea from the original Starlord & Aegis fluff about extra needs for temporary passengers.
