Alacorn Mk. V
« on: 20 February 2022, 12:30:46 »
Little-known outside the testing grounds of New Earth Trading Company, this variant of the premier 'mech destroyer took cues from the Mk. IV, but exchanged the three bulky autocannon for a staggering fifteen Maxell Mk. II medium lasers. Allegedly the project lead for the Mk. V had said, "Why aren't we using that fusion reactor?" then set out to push the envelope. The results were striking.
Visually, the sheer bulk of the cooling system required a raised deck behind the lightened turret, and aerospace pumps, heatsinks and coolant had to be employed to deal with the gigawatts of excess heat - nothing else would fit.
Tactically, the firepower of so many lasers was undeniable, and more than comparable to the three AC/20. Simulated targets were nearly vapourised by a full-power barrage, and an improvised 'five-five-five' firing pattern allowed continuous sustained fire in what the test crew nicknamed "the beam-hose".
However, there were problems: under heavy load, the cooling hump would glow red-hot, and in exercises, crew had to stay buttoned-up or risk severe burns when in battle. Even without that, the tracks would expand from the heat and need re-tensioning... but the crew would have to wait until the deck cooled to emerge, increasing the chances of a thrown track. The crew compartment had to have its own separate coolant loop as well. These issues could have been solved. What finally sunk it was that the normally low-slung, quiet-running tank was both louder (thanks to the cooling system) and much easier to find in a battle, as when firing it became a beacon on infra-red; a real problem for its short-ranged weaponry.
Uniquely, the Mk. V was the only Alacorn to ever mount an anti-personnel weapon, however superfluous: one Maxell small pulse laser in the front.

I like it, not exactly what comes to mind when someone says Alacorn to me, but looking at the variants, there's actually been more that are close/medium range than the classic triple gauss. That being said, this is basically the upgraded Ontos without the LRM racks, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Pulse lasers extend the short range to be equal to or a little better than ERML but for one less heat, which matters when dealing with the CV engine mass and heatsink nerfs. A targeting computer is just adding tasty, tasty evil sauce to any pulse laser Alacorn; it's a shame it's Clan Invasion-era exclusive. Plus, as my days of playing D&D 4E attest, you want your attacks to hit, so you stack to-hit bonus on to-hit bonus.

Just to test the virtue of beam-spam, I did fifteen 2d6 rolls on Rolz:
Code: [Select]
5 | 8 | 8 | 5 | 7 | 8 | 7 | 4 | 7 | 10 | 7 | 7 | 6 | 7 | 6
At a TN of 6 (Gunnery 4 + tank moved + Assault movement), I got lucky: 12 hits.

A TN of 5 increases that to 14 hits... but it wouldn't be able to fit all 15, so 12-13.

With pulse lasers on top of that to give a TN of 3, everything hit, but it's down to 10 hits. Still, it does slightly more damage per hit.

Let's check the damage on a sacrificial Atlas. We'll assume it's just walking straight at the Mk. V:

Code: [Select]
9 | 9 | 7 | 9 | 7 | 9 | 2 | 10 | 10 | 8 | 9 | 4

LL ; LL ; CT ; LL ; CT ; LL ; CT (Crit!) ; LA ; LA ; LT ; LL ; RA

25 damage to the LL, 15 to the CT, 10 to the LA, 5 to the RA and LT. That's a lot of damage, but ol' Skelly Head is still fighting fit post seeing the light, even with that crit to the torso:
Code: [Select]
     FRONT            REAR           INTERNAL
  .../ 9\...       .../**\...       .../ 3\...
 /27| 32 |32\     /10| 14 |10\     /21| 31 |21\
(24). -- .(29)   (   |    |   )   (17). -- .(17)
   /  /\  \         /      \         /  /\  \
  /16.\/.41\       /        \       /21.\/.21\

But the pilot is facing a Piloting Skill Roll. Do they stay up? TN is, say, 6 (5 plus 20+ dmg. mod.):
Code: [Select]
2D6 => 7Passed. Drat.

The mech also takes:
Code: [Select]
d6 => 2 ; d6 => 1an engine hit. Double drat.

Just to compare it to the Mk.IV triple AC20 (TN 6 again):
Code: [Select]
8 | 3 | 12Two hits to
Code: [Select]
10 | 7 LA & CT. That's two weakened points and a PSR compared to one and some sandpapering.

In summary, the tank I've made is not quite that scary to an assault mech. But it would still want to think a bit about facing it.

Sorry, I really don't see the point of a heavy tank moving 3/5 which can only effectively fight at knife-fighting range. Not a very efficient way to spend your resources.

Well, in this case, a couple of ER Medium Lasers or something with similar range are enough...  ??? No need to bring out the big guns.

The cMPL give it an effective short range of 8 - not nothing. The TC lets you land more shots at that range.

Ooh, that's good. Chunky, but good.

It makes for a nice body guard unit that can still support the main Mk6 tanks.

No pesky Hovers w/ SRMs will be getting close.

Sort of like having an MML-5 Carrier next to LRM-20 Carriers.
