What's interesting to me is what's not there topside. Also, the OSV surface escort appears nicely in the background. The other OSV I think is where the picture was taken from.

Hey, I know that place!

Also, it's worth noting that's not a Nimitz class carrier in that pic: it's the USS Midway, in her museum berth.  Carrier Row is on the other side of the bay, off the right edge of the frame of that pic.  My old office is just barely on the edge of the left side of the pic.

Lastly, this picture reminds me of why I hate driving over the Coronado Bay Bridge.

My last view of the ship I qualified OOD in was from that bridge... I've been across it since, but not with the same emotions...

It the Hunter Class the Aussie version of Type 26 City Class of the UK. Canada is also getting a version of the ship.

Yes some modern ships are very unique

It looks alright. The diamond orientation radar panels are a bit unusual instead of being aligned with the mast. It also seems unusually cluttered topside for a modern design. Notably, I think that artwork is of the British configuration. HMS Glasgow is the first to launch (Dec 2022) and is currently fitting out.

The first Aussie Hunter class supposedly just started cutting steel around the time Glasgow was launched, but I'm not seeing any photos or media of it under construction, despite it supposed to have been laid down last year. However, the program as a whole was already 4 years behind schedule and 15 billion over budget back in 2022 and the number ordered cut from 9 to 6 with the numbers to be made up by a future smaller frigate class. Hunter-class are supposed to be equipped with AEGIS and Saab combat systems. I wouldn't be surprised if further issues dog the Aussie surface fleet recapitalization given the financial and personnel commitment needed by the SSN program.

It's also a bit disconcerting that I'm not turning up any artwork of the Australian-specific version other than from the early proposals. Most depictions seem to just use the UK design as a placeholder.

https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2024/01/hunter-class-frigate-procurement-flawed-review/

On the Canadian side, construction of the first ship is supposed to start this year but they don't seem to have a class name or ship name list set yet. Concept art:

Per the timeline as of early-2022, project approval should have been completed by now and implementation should be starting, but there hasn't been any update recently, which is mildly alarming.

The first Hunter has a planned delivery date of 2034 ( ).

A-10s in salute to USS Nebraska's deployment.

The same thing with German frigate Baden-Württemberg in Rota last tuesday. Overflight by a Spanish A400M along with two Spanish and two German Eurofighters.

The ship has been deployed away from Germany since October and last week set sail for a show-of-force cruise around the world which will last until next December.
Highlight of the cruise will be a joint force RIMPAC participation in Hawaii, for which she will be joined by a strike wing of 42 (!) German, Spanish and French aircraft - which are on a separate 2-month around-the-world tour simultaneously.

She met up with AOR Frankfurt am Main, which will escort her on the cruise, yesterday in the middle Atlantic. The AOR was similarly saluted as she left (the same day, 2000 km away) by an A400M in formation flight with two Eurofighters and two Tornados.

Speaking of odd looking warships, the new French Frégate de Défense et d'Intervention has some interesting lines. Currently, 1 fitting out, 1 under construction, and 3 ordered for the French navy, 1 fitting out, 2 under construction for the Hellenic navy. ~4500 tonnes displacement, about 400 ft (122m) long, so closer in displacement to a Perry than some newer jumbo frigates (the Constellations are ~100 feet longer with 2500+ tons more displacement, and they're not that unique in displacement)

The flat bow on ships looks really odd to me. Like they ran into something at full speed. The newer cruise ships have that and it looks wrong.

tumblehome hullforms usually do. but i'd say get used to it, since that is one of the easiest ways to cut down a radar cross section without resorting to fancy materials. which means that the odds are high that every military will be adopting it going forward. civilian ships have started using the flat vertical or backwards sloped prow's because they're wave piercing, which reduces the amount of spitch the ship experiences from rough seas. kinda an important feature when you have that many passengers.

Im sure the flat bow is better for the long run performance of the ship.

The flat bow on ships looks really odd to me. Like they ran into something at full speed. The newer cruise ships have that and it looks wrong.

Check out Royal Navy ships from pre-WW1 to WW2, lots of them have very little rake in the bow. I think it's the shape of the flare and the way the hull widens quickly that combine to make it look weirdly tubby. That might also just be the artists' depictions being unflattering. The bridge is also very low, like the Singapore Formidable-class derivatives of the La Fayette
