the Arctic Wolf BattleMech was produced on Arc-Royal by Clan Wolf-in-Exile to
bolster their touman. While initially planned as a future Omnimech, knowledge
gained about the Cougar Omnimech from the Jade Falcon incursion into Coventry
in 3058 led to a significant change in plans, with Clan Wolf-in-Exile opting to
develop their own Omnimechs based on existing designs. As a result, the Arctic
Wolf's role was reduced to being deployed to second-line or garrison clusters,
as well as being used for weapons testing.
The Arctic Wolf would later gain the attention of Clan Diamond Shark, and
through trade gained the license to build their own Arctic Wolf 'mechs in
Priori.
Capabilities:
The Arctic Wolf was initially envisioned to be a 40-ton 'mech, but due to being
only able to build one type of Fusion Engine ( i.e. Type II 300 XL Fusion
Engine) as part of Clan Wolf-in-Exile's 'Project 300' plan, the design was
modified to 50 tons, trading in some speed as a result; however, it is still
fairly quick, with a max speed of 97.2 km/h. Surprisingly, the designers opted
to stick with a standard chassis and 10.5 tons of standard armor; it is
believed that this was done to help reduce expenses.
The bulk of the Arctic Wolf's firepower comes from its LRM-20 launchers, with
one per side torso, supplied with four tons of ammo. These are backed up by
three ER Medium Lasers, with one per arm and one in the center torso. Twelve
double heat sinks provide respectable waste heat dissipation.
Variants:
Arctic Wolf 2 - created in 3062, this variant has the LRMs are downsized to
LRM-15s; this allows for a couple of Small Pulse Lasers (one per arm), as well
an Active Probe, to be added. This makes the Arctic Wolf a bit more
well-rounded.
Arctic Wolf 2b - a sub-variant of the Arctic Wolf 2, this version has paired
machine guns added to each arm instead of a small pulse laser.
Arctic Wolf 2-KH - A result of a collaboration between Clan Wolf-in-Exile and
the Kell Hounds, this subvariant has the same weapons as the Arctic Wolf 2, but
is built in Arc-Royal Mechworks, and utilizes an Inner-Sphere XL Engine; the
armor was also replaced with IS-grade Ferro-Fibrous, to allow IS-grade CASE to
be added in the side torsos.
Arctic Wolf 3 - This variant has an ER PPC in the center torso, backed up by
four SRM-6 launchers for close-range combat, with one per arm and one per side
torso. An ECM Suite provides additional protection against enemy electronics.
Arctic Wolf 4 - this variant acts as a test platform for ATM and Heavy Laser
technology, with an ATM-6 launcher on each side torso and a Heavy Medium Laser
on each arm. An ER Large Laser rounds out the armament. Some say that this is
Khan Phelan Kell's way of mocking the Lobo 'mech.
Arctic Wolf PK - this variant is similar to the Arctic Wolf 3, but replaces the
arm-mounted SRM-6 launchers with Heavy Medium Lasers. A two-ton targeting
computer helps make direct-fire weapons more accurate and thirteen double heat
sinks keep waste heat at managable levels.
