Testpics: Geo-Hex Battlescape and buildings
« on: 23 May 2024, 17:17:11 »
I'm putting up some test pics.
None of this stuff is completely done and I'm still experimenting with lighting and equipment.
The greens are tending to look more like desert tan in some but
slightly blue in others.
The 4 buildings were official Battletech licensed products inspired by the TV show.
Here's some Battlescape with the old Geo-Hex HPG station, Power Station,
and Barricks.

The next is a Lance sized Mechbay.
Originally it was the Somerset UniversityMech Maintanence Facility.

This Awesome in the same hex with a tree is demonstrating why the 1.5
inch hex is a popular size for Battletech. With the standard Battletech base
just enough room is left for a tree to represent woods or some other terrain feature.

Just did some more color adjustments today.
After modifying the color the files were to big for one post.
The last pic is an overhead view of the center section of the map.
I might redo the background. It's nearly an exact copy of the horizon
behind my house but the steep slopes on the hills look odd.
I might have to get a new phone to get decent pics.
It's tough to see but there's a pair of Corsairs for air support and some
Karnov's dropping off jump infantry. LRM carriers are headed for cover
behind a level 1 hill.
The terrain in these pics is a 4 X 4 feet section and contain most of a
single Geo-Hex Battlescape basic set on top of a hexed and flocked mat.
Please let me know what you think. Ideas for improvement are welcome.

Multiple scales going on there if the hexes matter to you. (That maintenance hangar would only be a skewed 1 hex wide and ~1.5 inches tall using the Geo-Hex as a measure.) Otherwise, great.

Multiple scales is almost a necessity to 3D game with hexes.
At the modern 1/265 scale of Battletech Mech minis a hex would
be more then 4.5 inches across!
That would kind of limit your gaming area.

The Mech hanger is pretty big.
Just  over 7 inches wide, 2 inches deep, and 3 inches high.
Each individual bay is around 1.5 inches wide. I had to stretch
it a little to fit the new wider minis.
The command building that's connected behind it is around
5.5 inches wide, 1.5 inches deep, and 3 inches tall.
If your trying to use hexes the bigger your building the more it has to be
skewed a little to come close.
They key is for all players to understand that the terrain is "representative"
of what you see but not exact. If anyone has any questions
during a game they should ask before finalizing a move.

We usually round fractions as 3 dots go up everything else goes down.
If you look at the hexes you'll understand what that means.
The hexes actually line up perfectly. They look off because some of them
weren't lined up and some look more off from the angle of the photos.

I got some new stuff in this weekend.
I'm still tinkering with the camera and editing software
to improve the pics and keep them within attachment size
for now.
Here's the extremely rare Mountainscape Skull Cave:

The Skull Cave is still a current Geo-Hex product.
This one's less then a week old.
I've only ever seen 3 of them. Most have pirate-like teeth
and don't actually lead out the back.
Mine's more like a toothless zombie and the cave inside goes
completely out the back. That honestly makes it easier to have
minis inside of it. You can't see it but when that pic was taken
there was a  Hunchback inside of it.
All of the 3D ground terrain pieces I'm showing are brand new production
by the inventor of the system himself Kieran Rohan.
The mat's were originally made by Geo-Hex as well but they
sold the rights and equipment to make them to MKP. ( Monday Knight Productions)
He makes the 3D terrain himself by hand right now and doesn't produce a huge quantity
and no longer advertises.  ( He's close to 80 )
I've been considering making an offer to him for the right to produce these
commercially myself, along with any tips he has learned by experience.

The stuff is fairly pricey but well worth it for serious gamers.
I don't want to post his contact on here, but if your seriously interested I can
message you a current copy of his catalog.

Cool, thanks!  Sadly, that level of terrain will have to wait until I actually retire...
