Conjurer battlemech, the Thunderwolf was Clan Wolf-in-Exile's Medium-Class
Omnimech, under the 'Project 300' rebuilding plan. First making its debut in
3062, the Thunderwolf fits with Clan Wolf-in-Exile's shift to faster,
hard-hitting 'Mechs.
As a front-line Omnimech, the Thunderwolf is powered by a Type II 300 XL Fusion
Engine, allowing it to reach a top speed of 97 km/h, while having twelve double
heat sinks stored in its base chassis. To further save weight, the Thunderwolf
was built with an Endo-Steel chassis, and protected with 8.5 tons of
Ferro-Fibrous armor; the Thunderwolf also comes with a Full-Head Ejection
System to prevent the loss of a warrior in combat.
Capabilities:
Many of the Thunderwolf's configurations were based on the Grendel, so much so
that the Thunderwolf is sometimes called 'Grendel Mk II'. Only its emphasis in
greater firepower and the lack of integrated jump jets separates Thunderwolf
from its 'parent' design.
In its Prime Configuration, the Thunderwolf has an ER PPC on the right arm,
supported by an LRM-15 launcher in the left side torso for long-range combat,
with the LRM supplied with two tons of ammo. For short-range, the
configuration featured a trio of ER Medium Lasers (one on the head and two on
the left arm) and an SRM-6 launcher (supplied with one ton of ammo) in the
right side torso, with a Small Pulse Laser rounding out the armament. The
Prime has five jump jets part of its load out, and an Active Probe for
protection against hidden enemies.
Configuration A is a missile boat, with each side torso sporting an LRM-20
launcher, with five tons of ammunition giving the 'mech a good degree of
operational endurance. A Medium Pulse Laser on each arm and one on the head
provide non-ammo based back-up should all the LRM ammo get used up, while a
Micro Pulse Laser in the left side torso was meant to deal with soft targets.
Configuration B has a Gauss Rifle on its right arm as its main weapon, supplied
with three tons of ammo, complemented by an LRM-10 launcher supplied with
one-ton of ammo. This is backed up by paired ER Medium Lasers on the left arm
and one ER Medium Laser on the head.
Inspired by the Hunchback battlemech, Configuration C is meant as a striker,
with an Ultra AC/20 mounted in the right side torso, supplied with three tons
of ammo, as its main weapon. This is backed up by three ER Medium Lasers (one
per arm and one on the head). AN ECM Suite would help protect against enemy
detection, while five jump jets provide additional mobility.
Configuration D is geared towards combat where mobility and accuracy are a
must. A Large Pulse Laser on the right arm is its longest-range weapon;
however, it truly excels in close-range combat, with courtesy of three Medium
Pulse Lasers (a pair on the left arm and one on the head) and a Streak SRM-6
launcher on the right side torso. A Small Pulse Laser rounds out the armament.
This configuration also has an Active Probe and an ECM Suit, while five jump
jets provide additional mobility.
Configuration E has three ATM-6 launchers as its main weapons (one per side
torso and on on the arm), with enough ammunition to maximize the effectiveness
of the ATM's flexibility. An ER Medium Laser on the left arm and an ER Medium
Laser on the head provide non-ammo dependent back-up firepower.
Configuration F features an ER Large Laser on each arm and an LRM-10 launcher
in the right side torso as its main long-range weapons, backed up by an SRM-4
launcher in the left side torso and a Heavy Medium Laser in each side torso for
close-range combat. A two-ton targeting computer significantly improves
direct-fire accuracy, while both missile launchers are linked to an Artemis IV
Fire Control System to allow for greater missile accuracy.
Configuration H features a Heavy Large Laser on the right arm and paired Heavy
Medium Lasers on the left arm. Besides the Heavy Lasers, this configuration
also has an LRM-15 launcher in the left side torso, an ER Medium Laser on the
head, and an SRM-6 launcher abd a Micro Pulse Laser in the right side torso
rounding out the armaments. A two-ton targeting computer helps mitigate the
Heavy Lasers' inherent inaccuracy issues. Even with a total of 16 double heat
sinks, this configuration is still prone to heat issues.
Configuration I is basically a test-bed for Improved Jump Jets; in this case,
the configuration was fitted with 9 of them, allowing the 'mech to vault up to
270 meters. In terms of weaponry, this configuration has an ER PPC, three ER
Medium Lasers, and an SRM-6.
Battle History:
The Thunderwolf Omnimechs were first deployed by Clan Wolf-in-Exile as part of
Operation Audacity (combined SLDF-Lyran-WiE counterattack against the Jade
Falcon invasion of 3064), where the 'mechs' combination of mobility and
firepower proved to be too much for the Jade Falcon forces. By the time the
counterattack campaign was done, only one Thunderwolf was lost, though the
warrior piloting it survived to fight another day.
Deployment:
As a flagship 'mech, the Thunderwolf is expected to become a prominent fixture
in the Clan Wolf-in-Exile touman. Trade with the Diamond Sharks did lead to
several Thunderwolf 'mechs becoming part of the Sharks' touman.
