TO&E, OpFor? What do that mean?
« on: 22 August 2011, 14:19:15 »
Since I'm waiting for my new BT books to come in the mail I'm reading what there is to read online about BT (a lot!) and a few terms come up again and again.

What the heck does TO&E and OpFor mean?

Table of Organization and Equipment- the list of stuff a military unit has in its inventory, informally it is the players force

Opposing Force- the Enemy.

TO&E: Table of Organisation & Equipment.  It's a list of a military force's unit breakdowns and assets.
Opfor: Opposing force.  What it actually is, is a friendly unit who represents an enemy in wargames and training exercises.  In common Battletech usage, it is more commonly used to describe the enemy itself.

TO&E is all the equipment in your force. Traditionally it is all your combat assets but could also include your support personel and equipment.

OpFor is the oposing force...your oponent.

I have been asking myself the same thing and I have a harder question!

On which page in Campaign Operations is this abbreviation spelled out completely for the first time? And why does it say "Force worksheet" in the back, and sometimes refers to that name (in image descriptions) and sometimes refers to TO&E?

Not sure if everyone does this, but I call the GM controlled opponents 'OpFor' because its not an enemy player in a versus game, its a gamemaster villian of the week thats not really there to defeat the players, just to challenge them as part of a narrative campaign.  Players have to track stuff like repairs and experience, while OpFor ceases to exist after the battle, to be replaced with next weeks units.

'The Enemy' I use more when talking about another player's force in versus games where its win/loss, not narrative campaign.
